The ketogenic way of eating is sweeping the world and up-ending long-held paradigms of health and nutrition. At some point, adults want to know, which alcohol is keto, if any, and what can I do to have a drink sometimes and not mess up my diet.
This is an excellent question, and there are definite things you can avoid to improve your overall health. Some alcoholic beverages have a much lower carb-count than others, and you need to know the difference.
When going out, or staying in, there are some alcoholic beverages that are much less-bad than others. Let's talk about your options and also what to avoid. If you''ll be having a drink or 3 soon, consider making a batch of Ketorade first, you can find the recipe here:

Dry wines are usually okay because the fermentation process has pretty much got rid of all the sugars. Red and White wine are okay, for me at least. I have been in ketosis for about a month and I have had some white or red wine every day. Buy some keto sticks to test your urine or if you want more accuracy then you buy the blood tester and you can see how many ketones are in your body.

Hell...have your wine! I like a glass of dry red with my dinner...and maybe one more on my once a week night out. I'm still in the first month of Keto and I'm slowly losing the 15 pounds I want to lose. I feel great! Losing the grains ...the joint pain that used to plague me is gone. I've also found that I can't ever have one too many wines as the keto diet makes me know that 2 is definitely enough...lol. "Cheers"

Come on people live your life, don't be sterilised by a diet to stop having some fun and enjoyment. Once in a while cut loose or you will anyway. Just be kind to yourself and get back on board again soon after.

Your explanation about the liver processing toxins first (alcohol, then carbs, then fat) was a lightbulb moment for me, further solidifying the "carbs are the enemy" due to the fact that they "burn off faster" vs. fat. Thank you so much!

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my wife which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.

Can you help me with the reliable source 🙏. I'm 56 and have suffered for years with addiction, anxiety and severe ptsd, I got my panic attacks under control myself years ago and they have come back with a vengeance, I'm constantly trying to take full breaths but can't get the full satisfying breath out, it's absolutely crippling me, i live in Australia. From my experience it really works excellently! It doesnt even need to be a full hit. With potent shrooms 2-3 small ones will still make a clear difference. It will be a few hour cosy rumbling moment around rest time, but afterwards its just calm and you feel amazing and gain your freedom. Psilocybin is different dudes, its the only "treatment" I would recommend to someone who genuinely wants to get better. There is no addiction, withdrawal, or negative side effects. It's just pure healing., far more effective than any anti-depressant. You can thank me later,

As a functional alcoholic I went from 267 to 175 drinking Miller 64 everyday. My daily routine once I lost about 50 lbs was 6 mile run before work and gym after work.

from a pure insulin perspective, there are low calorie beers and dry wines (and vodka) that are fine. the issue is that alcohol is a nuerotoxin. in high enough doses, its pretty bad for you. also raises resting cortisol levels.

Gin, vodka, scotch, whiskey = approved keto drinks. He recommends gin + soda (club) + lime/lemon for flavor. Also can add mint, stevia, etc.

You’re the most sane keto person I’ve seen so far. My philosophy is similar. I’m good all week, but on Friday I have a cheat. I usually go to dinner with my parents or something. I order whatever I want. Then I’m right back on keto. I look forward to it and it keeps me sane. Same goes for vacation. I don’t worry about it. I figure that the way I eat day in and day out is what is going to manifest in my health, not the few times I splurge. Hey! You have to enjoy life after all!😃

So much of your health is what you think and if you are happy. You can eat a perfect diet and have a life full of stress and the diet won't make any difference. I think people have given up on life and just worry about their diet all the time.

Suzanne Somers recommends this if you must have a drink. Equal amounts (a shot glass each) of: Silver Patron tequilla Lime juice (may substitute sugar-free grapefruit juice) Fresca (or another diet soda) Stevia drops (if needed)

First off thank you Dr. Berry for all you have taught me this year. I got questions. I am a 52 year old woman. For the past 12 years I drank beer daily. I rarely missed a day. In 2019 I drank 6-8 beer every day, some days more. I had gained 50 lbs in the past two years. I have a new year resolution to stop drinking for one month and to eat a C-food diet, no foods that started with C like cake, candy, cookies, coke, crackers, cream, chips, chocolate bars, carbs, and no white food. I have tried to do this in years past. I did not do well, it was hell. I found the keto diet, looking for food choices. I have been researching ever since. I was concerned about the effect it would have on me, if I went clean keto and stopped drinking on the same day. I found no info on alcoholism and starting a keto life style. I was scared. I am on day 26 Keto & Sober. I went through the keto flu about days 3 to 5. I really felt like crap. Here's the thing. I have no desire to drink, nothing, nil, zip. My want for a beer is as strong a my want for a Mars bar. It's not there. I knew my cravings for sugar would diminish but I did not realize it would effect my alcoholism. My new year resolution goal is in 4 days. This was not my plan, but I decided to continue this way. I Keto + IF works so well for me. I know in my gut this is the way I am suppose to eat. I want to know more about alcoholism and Keto. I believe that Keto has a lot to do with my brain and beer. Can you explain what has happened and talk more about alcohol-fatty liver and keto transitions please. I am unemployed at the moment but when I am employed I will definitely be supporting your channel. Love you Dr.Berry you and a few others have changed my life, when I was not expecting it. Thank You

Thanks for the great tips. I rarely drink anymore and only have a glass of wine or one glass of champagne on New Years eve. I was buying some wine to have at home, but have decided I would rather only drink a glass of wine when dining out once in awhile but not always. Bloody Mary's or virgin Bloody Marys are a good way to go and healthy with the tomato juice and you get a stalk of celery with that. It should be organic celery though preferably because that's one of the heaviest sprayed crops along with strawberries, peaches and apples. My husband and I had a great Bloody Mary once made with cucumber vodka which was to die for. Great with breakfasts or brunches when dining out on vacations.

This is the one thing I do NOT have a problem giving up. Even before keto I only drank once or twice a year on holidays. I have had half of a light beer once in the last 18 months and it just didn't taste like it was worth it. I didn't want it to interfere with my weight loss journey or cause a stall.

This may be the strongest medical argument you could possibly make for the “ancestral appropriateness” of the keto diet. It’s cut and dry, air-tight, blatantly obvious logic. This was great!

I've waited for so long, and honestly I could sit and listen to you forever explain how normal life/the inner body/the ketogenic diet interact through different scenarios. Hi Dr Berry, love your channel. Here in Australia we have plenty of low-carb beers for sale and have had so for many years now with more and more popping up all the time - it's bit of a trend over here and I'm not complaining:). These beers even have their own section in the bottle shop (liquor store). There is also have a zero carb beer which is what I now drink occasionally. Doesn't seem to affect my keto from what I can tell. Most of the low-carb beers are around 0.5-2g of carbs per bottle. From a recently video from Keto Connect - it seems the low-carb beer trend in the US is not quite mainstream yet.

Hello Dr Berry, I hope that you enjoyed your visit to GB. I enjoy watching you videos, and the subject of alcohol is extremely important. As far as I am aware, from a medical perspective, half a small glass of red wine (which also contains resveratrol), diluted with some water, and taken once every two weeks, has been found to be of benefit to health. End of story. The other definition that may or may not co exist, is that I am an alcoholic if I drink more than my doctor !! From the description of what might be interpreted to be your enjoyment of it's various forms, I think that I might be alright !! (Retired GP in England)

Beer Belly! I can you tell you first hand about the Beer Belly. I decided it was time to lose weight and obviously had to cut the beer (which I love). Lost 10 pounds in the first week and feel so much better. I learned how to make an "Old Fashioned" with 0 carb sweetener and that will be my go to for the occasional drink.

miggov66; you may have lost 10lbs in a week but it's not 10lbs of fat, sorry. Mostly water, probably 7.5 to 8.5+ is only water which is why it is so easy to put weight back on. I go on a diet and notice I am peeing a whole lot more than prior to.

A really old Scotch or Whiskey, no ice, no mix. Just one ounce, and nurse it. Put it to your lips, then lick your lips. Can last hours.

I recently read that in the early 20th century, patients who had what we now know is diabetes, got treated with basically fasting, where they only got black coffee and whiskey. So if you really want you can say alcohol is part of your intermittend fasting routine ;)

Just like sugar and fat, its worse when you combine them, just like alcohol mixed with fats due to burning order. So it makes some sense but alcoholism, just like diabetes, is PREVENTABLE.

There is Pinot Grigio, Burgandy, and Carbernet Dry wines that contain less sugar. Mix liquor with diet soda. Gin and Diet Squirt pop is the best tasting to drink!

QUESTION! If alcohol is metabolized preferentially by the body over carbs, fats, and proteins, then what happens to digestion while you’re drunk? Especially carbs, and even more especially sugars? If this is true, then wouldn’t your blood sugar rise indefinitely for as long as you kept eating carbs/sugars until you were completely sober? Example: a person gets drunk to the point of having a BAC of .12. That will take 6 hours for their body to metabolize (at the standard rate of .02 per hour). But, if the drinks they are consuming have sugar in them, plus they are eating pretzels, fries, pizza, and possibly even sweets during this whole time, then how could their body just not metabolize sugars and carbs for that long? I thought possibly carbs might not metabolize into simpler sugars and spike the blood glucose, but if they are eating ice cream and candy, then that’s a lot of sugar that should go directly into the blood and spike blood glucose. So, I assume insulin is still being released and signally cells to take in glucose and that glucose is still being converted into triglycerides, no?? Very curious how this works / is possible.

If you are a male and your age is above 30, then alcohol is going to boost estrogen dominance in your body. Alcohol is probably THE most estrogenic substance you could possibly put inside of your body. This alone should keep you away from alcohol and im really surprised the Doc didnt mentioned it at all in this video.

I know this is old but it really helped me sort out my Carnivore heavy KETO diet. Like many, I love Alcohol...especially beer and wine. Not only do I love the taste, I love the ancestral tradition and masterful expertise one takes in creating an awesome product like a Guinness or Hacker-Pschorr Hefe-Weissen. Thank You, Dr. Ken, for this video! My hubby who puts my healthy way of eating down- probably because he drinks a lot of bourbon & water most every night- watched this whole video! I don't drink very often or much-- the Chablis I enjoy on rare occasion only has one carb per oz., so 3 oz. with my steak & lobster was great and I stayed purple! YAY!!

Lime Rickys are traditionally; A shot of gin, soda water, a couple + TB lime and sugar - maybe a couple TSP or more. If I make it I substitute the sugar with Stevia. I'm a long time fan of G+T also. If I make one now I substitute regular sweet tonic water with diet tonic water - no carbs - and punch it up with a splash more of lime and Stevia.

I drink in extreme moderation and even then I barely drink anything. I’m basically my friends designated driver. I don’t mind at all… I hold to my way of life… I still have a fun time with friends… and I make sure they all get home safe… it’s a win for everyone involved

I drink bourbon with a large cube, no dilution and I stay in the 100-125 proof range. It hasn't seemed to cause me a keto issue but I only have about 2-3 lowballs / week.

Michelob Ultra...4.2% alcohol and only 2.6g of carbs per 12-oz serving. After being on keto for so long, 2 Ultras give me a hell of a buzz

TopJimmy2 try amstel xlight. Its 4.2 ABV , it has 2g per 12oz serving too. Btw how many 12oz beers of Michelob do you have ? I personally have around 6 amstel beers. Which is 12 carbs. Total.

Raymond S Michelob now has Ultra Pure Gold. Less sweet that regular Mich Ultra and 2.5 carbs vs 2.6. I think the flavor is a hair better.

As much as I love beer the reality is that just counting the carbs is only half the story....drinking alcohol takes your liver off the fat-burning grid while it spends it's resources processing the alcohol along with your kidneys to get it out of your system.

Well I'm sure you can text while you drive...but I'd bet you're not at your optimum at either while doing so. Most people in the field believe the body treats alcohol as a poison and uses as much resources as needed to remove it. Keep the liver busy processing alcohol and you're limiting it's fat burning /metabolic capabilities. The proverbial "beer belly" isn't a myth. I'll side with Berry on this one...alcohol severely interferes with the metabolism process. I wish it didn't....I loves me some beer.

I worked with an Irish nutritionist once that figured out that you can meet all your nutritional requirements with one banana, a bowl of oatmeal and 42 pints of Guinness. I like a Guinness occasionally but currently am drinking bourbon. I limit my bourbon to one drink on Friday afternoon and always neat. You dance around the issue of catabolite repression. It is always about the return on investment. The body will utilize the cheapest energy source first then move on to the energy sources that require more energy to burn. As a microbiologist, this is a fundamental biological fact for understanding metabolism.

Nice to know you’re in London, don’t know where you’re from, i live in England x I’m enjoying your teaching, learning a lot, have been doing keto for 2 months. I have a long way to go, but trying to stick with it. And doing well with food, one step at a time. I only do alcoholic twice a week this is because of emotional and sleep one small with soda, I’m 12 stone. 68 female, a carer for my family, very active, no medication x looking forward to go strict keto x

Thanks for this. This is another excuse I need to avoid peer pressure to drink. People tell me that I'm not having enough fun. I'd rather be cautious than get belly fat, a stroke or have a serious car accident.

Hello, thanks I learned a few things but I will had that I am pretty sure that for example you can take vodka with water kefir, the second fermentation of the juice that you put when you make water kefir will be without sugar and with a fizz (bubble), it will be also very tasty, orange, mango... even banana ...

Don’t agree with your stand on beer, there are several light beers that only have 2.5 carbs, less than most wines. Please correct me if I’m wrong!

as an insulin dependent diabetic, I can attest to the alcohol metabolized first & you get high blood sugar with your buzz in minutes. That said, I do enjoy my glass of red with family Sunday dinners most weeks, it might temporarily knock me out of keto but I'm fine by the time I'm home & test. Also, there is a quinine water (tonic h2o) sweetened only with stevia & I enjoy my very occasional gin & tonic with it. Don't remember the brand, get it at my food co-op and read the labels to get the right one. I live on the west coast, could be regional.

KETO Strawberry Daiquiri: Mix one packet of sugar free (zero carbs!) strawberry jello as directed BUT immediately place in freezer (do NOT allow to set) in a plastic tumbler. Allow to freeze solid. Later .... semi-thaw tumbler of "ice jello" for 30 minutes. Place ice column in blender. Add rum. Blend until uniform consitency. Add one serving cool whip. Voila! Delicious!

DR BERRY, I got a Guinness recipe for ya! Mix 1 can of unsweetened nitro cold brew coffee with 1 shot of vodka. It tastes like Guinness.

I love a small glass of champagne about once a month. It's a keto treat. Also about once a month I'll have a shot of some zero carb liquor with flavored seltzer water. I never use one with any fake sugars. They only have natural flavorings.

Alcohol is absorbed through the stomach, which is why it gets into the bloodstream so quickly, especially on an empty stomach. Carbs are absorbed in the small bowel, and of course have to pass through the stomach first. The rate of absorbtion depends on the type of carb: pure glucose is the fastest - a matter of minutes; a low GI food like broccoli is absorbed at a far slower rate. Just to be complete: digestion of carbs starts in the mouth, as amylase is present in saliva. As amylase only acts in an alkaline environment, digestion of carbs stops in the stomach. When the carbs leave the stomach, and enter the alkaline environment of the small bowel, pancreatic amylase restarts the breakdown of carbs.

We have low carb beer Gambrinus Dry and Staropramen Decko with only 0.9 g carbs per 100 ml in Czech Republic, 4% of alcohol, made specially for diabetics.

Form drinking a bottle of Red Wine (Shiraz) every...yes every night and more on weekends I’m down to only drinking 2-3 glasses of Gin on the weekends. I’m making progress on. My Keto plans. What is Ketorade? I am looking for "Drinks" I can have through the day that does not keep my blood sugar up. But the search brings back alcohol. I drink Tea through the day with one scoop of brown sugar since I weaned myself painfully off soda several years ago. I lately found I flail like a fish out of water when I sleep and often burst out of bed in the night frustrated. Side note: I want to add that I avoid carbon-dioxide drinks. After learning about Dr. Otto Warburg's research. I have wondered about the increase of CO² in the blood when drinking these.

Everclear or other brands of grain alcohol. I find the negative effects from it are greatly lessened versus other types of alcohol. I dilute it with flavored seltzer until it is about 8-10%. Try to avoid doing it too often. Maybe once a week.

I was devastated to learn tonic water has *high* *fructose* *corn* *syrup* !!! WHY on earth??? I've tried the gin and soda with lemon alternative but it doesn't taste good! Sadly, when it comes to drinking I go "dirty keto" and invest all of my alloted carbs into booze. So, fat, protein, and booze (which for me means prosecco, hard cider or gin & fruit juice). I'm able to get back in ketosis pretty quick with this method but I know it's not ideal. Yet, I'm still losing weight so it's working!

My big question is why is society based on alcohol? For every social function there must been alcohol. Would I be answering my own question if I said that everyone has a form of social anxiety in which alcohol numbs the fear? Do we live in a society in which one must hide who they are instead of gazing into the mirror of truth? Is it the only way people get laid, lett loose, and have fun? Welcome to being an adult son. That what my father told me. "Son, If you want to be social, then you have to get right with the drink and not judge." When I see videos like this I begin to understand that I'm too far away from being human or ever wishing to be human.

I used to love beer. But hated the way it made my gut feel. Bloat, pain, endless burping ect. Switch to scotch whisky and bourbon and also keto and all that went away! All things in moderation but now I'm a connoisseur of fine whisky

the problem is that alcohol stops the production of ketones... basically everything which is done in the liver stops it... as some substances have to be broken down and removed first to get rid of them...

Pure etoh is metabolized into acetyl coA and can be fed into the Krebs cycle or fatty acid synthesis. It cannot be made into glucose. So yes it may interfere with fat catabolism and resultant ketosis.

Can you address what is bad about your body processing alcohol first? What happens to the un-processed carbs in the meantime? Are't they simply processed later? Why does alcohol seem to ruin ketosis and hence weight loss?

I'm a rum drinker... used to be with Pepsi... recently switched to keto and am now drinking it with diet 7 up and a splash of meo for taste (more to kill the aspartame taste)
