Hi Marc here some question, before painting change the composite method of their lineart layer to multiply, what for? Isn't it easier to create a multiply layer on top of the lineart, or below it and color without any composite method on lineart layer and does it make sense to switch the layer mode to multiplay, when the lineart is drawn in pure black color, without changing the transparency. I saw how one artist did it, although in my opinion it does not give any visible effect.

Just a caution for Clip Studio users following this workflow; CSP really does not seem to enjoy adjusting pure black shading layers, cause it doesn't seem to store a hue value for them, so the basic HSV adjuster will do nothing to the H or S - at least, that's my experience.

I like to block transparency and then fill everything with a chosen color, maybe that can help to avoid the issue with HSV adjuster?
@evrenbasak6381

So to fix that do not use black and white or gray. Use a color like blue or red and shade with that color. And then adjust the final colors.

@RinzyOtt 2 года назад
@@mrs.quills7061 You could also achieve the same effect, with a less destructive workflow, by using a clipping layer with the colors you'd like to make your shadows. That could also make it easier to adjust the shadows themselves down the road.

@@YTartschool Thank you for the info. This tutorial was really helpful when I was completely new to digital art but now I would like to know more of what all those different layer types -like luminosity etc- do and how to use them in a practice situation (e.g. when you make a character design). If that makes sense to you. Since I must say layers are one of the things when drawing digitally that still overwhelms me. e.g. I have like 100 layers or I have only 2 but it makes more complicated. In short maybe how to use them effectively not just in theory but also in practice, I guess?

@TheT0me

@@philexlp7337 It makes sense, and I remember looking for the same thing. But it's a LOT of info to absorb, and if you don't have a practical use for it you'll just forget it. Don't let yourself be overwhelmed by all the options. Experiment with a couple, use the ones tutorials recommend, and in no time at all you'll realize you actually understand most of them and really only need three or four of them on a regular basis. You're better off spending your time practicing lighting, form, perspective. That stuff will pay off way more than knowing every single layer type.

I've only started doing art seriously since last year and it's been huge for me. You, Saito Naoki and Marco Bucci have been a huge part of this journey! Edit: Am curious, would you recommend to try this method over gradient maps or would you still say the former is best overall? Man this came at a perfect time I’m actually finishing up a snake and skull illustration and I wanted to push the colors and rendering a bit more, thanks for this! I’m gunna try rendering out the lighting first then the shadows. I actually do a similar process where I break down my sketches, line art, flats and lighting, but I was still struggling a bit with making the lighting process a bit smoother. I never knew the anti aliasing took actually made fills worse though. I’m gunna try without it next time. I use the magic wand tool and clipping masks to quickly fill in flats, but I’m wondering if that’s causing issues because of the anti aliasing.
