I was there as well. Early 80's Metallica was a mid act. Early 80's Judas Priest, Ozzy, and Iron Maiden were the kings of Metal. No one called them rock in comparison to other metal acts. Hell, all the way through And Justice For All, many considered them to be second string competition to Slayer.

I'm 54 /55 years old now and I learned to play every Screaming for Vengeance song , I got my first guitar and amp at 13 , I had a 100 watt Sears Silvertone 1484 I bought it for $10.00 at a yard sale and a home made 4x12 Celestion vintage 30's loaded cabinet a Boss DS-1 and an Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer I waz young and kinda proud and on top as long as the music was loud . . and a Charvel Fusion deluxe that I put a Dimarzio Super distortion pickup in . Yeah I blew the doors off in the 1980s . I still play Metal today , it's in my DNA . IT's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll .

Priest was there when heavy metal was invented, so they are less bound by the conventions of the genre. They are not trying to meet a standard set by someone else; they are the ones setting the standard. Basically, they do what they want.

Judas Priest has quite the variety of songs that are either Hard Rock, Metal or Ballads and flow seamlessly between them, especially in the 70s & 80s with the original band. For some hybrid goodness, try the Metal Gods, Desert Plains and the live cover of Joan Baez' great Diamonds and Rust. 3 very different but classic Priest songs that will blow your minds! Enjoy. 🎸

This is their "Enter Sandman" or "Smoke On The Water". Big radio hit that is easy to digest. The next one in this vein would be "Heading Out To The Highway". I'd suggest it for Brad since he likes to keep it simple. For Lex, I'd recommend "Screaming For Vengeance". If you do "Diamonds And Rust", do the live version with Tim 'Ripper' Owens on vocals, from the 1997 "Live Meltdown" album.

When Judas Priest scored a gold record in 1980 w/ their 6th album 'British Steel', the band showed how diverse heavy metal music could get- from shredding fast tunes to anthemic beats and bangers. Their 7th album 'Point of entry' took a step in a commercial direction... trying to incorporate elements of pop songs into heavy metal grooves. Unfortunately, Priest trying to broaden the appeal of heavy metal lost them fans and record sales w/ that record... So, they returned to what they were good at... shredding British heavy metal w/ this 8th album 'Screaming for vengeance' in 1982. "You've got another thing coming" became a huge single that year and the album went platinum (1 million copies sold) in the US (2x platinum now), their biggest-selling record to date... Judas Priest were a big attraction on tour and also triumphed in a set at the Us Festival 1983 in California.

1982. I was 10. Parents had pretty much controlled the music I had been exposed to up to around then, but the summer before, this little thing called Mtv drops. Within a year, this album Screaming for Vengeance, Def Leppard’s High ‘n Dry, Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden, all had videos on heavy rotation. This was one of the breakout songs for heavy metal because of that platform. Radio was too genre driven - you were locked into rock or top 40 or whatever depending on what station, but Mtv mixed it up in the early days and you could have a kid like me that had this album next to Rio by DuranDuran and some Depeche Mode next to my Dio and Black Sabbath. Combat Rock by the Clash, Blackout by the Scorpions, MJ’s Thriller, Van Halen’s Diver Down...

Off of their 'Screaming for Vengeance' album (82). Lex would have loved being around in the 80's, seeing these bands live, in their prime. That whole album is good btw. And peep the album cover art. I still remember KK Downing's red and white Gibson Flying V (similar to Kirk Hammet's black n white Gibson Flying V he played back in the day) KK's red n white Gibson sold at an auction for 185k (He's had other similar guitars, but that one to me was special) And the first time i saw them, He was on the left side of the stage, in the spotlight, right in front of me, playing that guitar, during the intro to 'Rock Hard Ride Free'. But they were all over the stage in that show. I classify this as "Classic Metal" or "Classic 80's Metal" /,,/ ! Classic 80's Metal, still undefeated 😉

And I dare say, we've always had in our personal way of dealing with issues that are sent to challenge us. One life, I'm going to live it up... If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by, you're thinking like a fool All this kind of stuff... You've Got Another Thing Coming. It's also wrapped up in the heavy metal community culture of the way we support each other with our metal. It's very much a song of hope and rising above the issues or difficulties that come your way. It's a song of resilience, as well."

This was one of the first Metal songs on MTV's regular rotation that helped bring metal mainstream . They had a streak of putting out albums annually for about a decade so there was a variety. The early fans thought they sold out when they released British Steel because it wasn't as progressive as before because Breaking the Law and others were too simple but Rob Halford said they had to eat . They made way more fans than they lost and the next album Point of Entry is basically Rock and Roll , then came this Screaming for Vengeance . Versatile and creative genius band that paid the tracks for many years.

Played this as an Air Band at the pep session in 86 in front the school, our team was going back to Market Square Arena to try to win a Championship, unfortunately we drew a Dynasty team 1st gm back to back. The Marion Giants, they were singing "Purple Reign, Purple Reign" you can guess their colors they were #1 in the Nation, we had a great team but they had co Mr Basketball winners Lyndon Jones and Jay Edwards (went to play for Bobby Knight, a few thousand students, we had 400, was like the movie Hoosiers but we couldn't beat them, no way.

Professor of rock channel has a couple Judas priest videos and will give you the reason this song was huge , it was on repeat on MTV , There was no Internet ,kids would watch music videos for hours , there were barely any gaming consoles, I blasted this through my boombox walking around the neighborhood

I loved this song back in the 80s, but now when I hear Judas Priest, mainly the song Breaking the Law, I have to chuckle because it makes me think of Beavis and Butt-Head. 😆

Massive hit here in Toronto. It was borderline too heavy to play on the FM radio stations here, but the greatness of this song won out big time.

Priest continued to evolve and explore their sound over the years. This one is a benchmark 80s Anthem from them, built for cranking in the car. Some examples from the 'storytelling' side of their catalog, "The Ripper" is from the 70s, and "The Sentinel" from the 80s. There's more, but those are 2 good starts. For more of the range of different styles, from the 70s to 2018, try "Here Come The Tears," "The Rage," "Private Property," and "Guardians/Rising From Ruins." Great Channel!

*LEX, ya gotta try the first two songs from this album; track 1 - Hellion ( a short instrumental) and track 2 - Electric Eye.This album/cassette-tape got abused in the cassette player in my car. It came out in 1982 when I was 20 yrs and I got to see them live on my 21st B-Day in '83 at the US Festival. It is a really good album. And yep...JP has done a gradual progression from their beginning, and getting heavier through time. But this is Heavy Metal for 1982. It all changed in 1983 with Metallica. Who I saw in Frisco in Mar '83 at The Stone...with Dave on guitar and Cliff just joined.*

You need to try "Breaking the Law" and "Hellbent for Leather." Both are classic Judas Priest songs with some grit and bite. I'm a black man who has been a JP fan since 1985. I've seen the in concert two times, back when Painkiller first came out, then just this past year. Best live show ever. I'm seeing them again in October 2022. Keep rocking with the Metal Gods!

'Ill never forget this song, as a "juke" played it on a certain night back in '82. I awoke in a broke-down van outside Seroka's bar, stinking, hungover, comin' down after a 3-day high, hurtin', and mean. The "biker club" I belonged to, just buried its leader, after a drunken 16-year-old girl killed him in a traffic accident. I went back into the bar to see if a "cold-one" would help my disposition. Short story, a fellow member and sadistic sociopath named "Skeech," vying for leader, started riding me. Angry words and punches were thrown, as I saw him make a move for his "Python." I drew first and placed a hard look into eternity, with a Colt .45 automatic in his face. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw unfriendly hands reach for "iron and steel," interrupted by a blast through the window from Seroka's double-barrel "coach gun." My friend "Shades" was on the other end of it ...smiling and telling everyone to throw their hardware out of that window. I relieved Skeech of his .357, grab my mug of beer and smashed it across his face. As Skeech laid on the floor with blood flowing over what was left of his teeth, like water over a dam, Shades and I split, kicking over bikes and haulin' ass as far and as fast as we could, and hid in a cornfield that night. 'Course, after 40 years, I'm a lot more mellow. Still, I REALLY like this song, ...lotta good memories.

Loved this reaction from both of you, as you now hear the differences in Judas Priests styles of songs. Now I think you both need to treat yourself to the Hard Rock classic "The Green Manilishi" (With the Two Pronged Crown) of Priest! The live version from the [Live Vengeance Tour '82] and you will hear not only an incredible version but also feel the love he gives back to the audience with Rob in his Prime leaving it all on the stage for his Rabid fans!! Enjoy~
