Randy Bachman was the guitarist in the band The Guess Who before this one. They're easily recognized by their big hit American Woman. They were fantastic too.
@joesmith8725
@joesmith8725 Год назад
Reason why it sounds a ahead of its time is, because BTO playing style and singing style. Not just the vocal styles as Lex says, but also musically as Brad puts it. It's like power pop and hard rock. Puts you in a good mood and catchy. Steve Miller Band was like them, too. These 2 bands and Cheap Trick were like that. Kind of alt rock for the '70s and '80s. I think bands lie The Who also influenced them. The Who was pretty much ahead of time, too and had an edge to their sound. This song was mid '70s. They were a band that was around in the '70s and early '80s. "You Aint seen Nothing Yet" and "Taking Care of Business" were also huge hits. True that they influenced other bands in the future, particularly alt rock bands. BTW, BTO guitarist/singer's son (and drummer's nephew), Tal Bachman also made music during the '90s and '00s. Check out more BTO and Tal Bachman music.

I think for Lex it's like the Weezer effect. Weezer had a retro sound, in the 90's. Most likely had BTO as an influence. Not ahead of their time, just rehashed by other bands later.

@@toddstevens13 yes it was. I saw it here in Chattanooga TN, BTO had their third album out. Segar had a hit on the radio but didn't know his name they really rocked the song was Beautiful Loser. Before BTO finished Segar came out and spoke to Randy Bachman , he said Bob wants to say something then we'll come back and play 3 songs. Segar said on your tickets it says the Bob Segar Band a d we have been trying to get a name for the band , we just now decided to go with the Silver Bullet Band. It came from the car .

Having grown up on the 70s, I experienced a lot of BTO's music around the time of my late childhood going into adolescence, so Lex is onto something. I also remember that a lot of 90s bands adopted the sound and style of the 70s and gave it an extra tweak to create the standard 90s rock sound, so Brad is probably thinking of songs by 90s bands that were 70s influenced.

Randy wrote "Hey You" as a counter blast to his ex-Guess Who band mate Burton Cummings. In 1975 B.T.O. were at the top of their game, they were selling records by the boat load and Burton Cummings had disbanded The Guess Who. When Randy left The Guess Who in 1970, Burton said to him that he'd never make it in rock & roll by being clean of drugs, well Randy proved him wrong and didn't he let him know it with "Hey You"?
