I knew there would be 0% chance you'd get the child bride reference. I've watched a lot of reactions to this song, no one has got it yet. I'll tell you what it is. The line "they burned like a ball on fire, when the rebel took a little child bride" is a reference to Jerry Lee Lewis and his song "Great Balls of Fire". Lewis was a rebel and a rock pioneer. He created controversy when it was found out that he married his 13 year old cousin. It basically killed his career. You should check out Lewis' biggest hit. It sounds great for it being made when it was.

@Dennis King I don't know how old you are, but it's mostly older people like myself who get the reference. I remember a lot of the people I went to school with didn't get the reference when the song came out. I got it because I had seen the movie "Great Balls of Fire" at the Drive-In(many probably don't know what that is either. Lol). I honestly miss the Drive-In. We don't have those anymore where I live. I don't know if any of them are still left. I loved it. We'd all pile into the truck and just have a great night at the Drive-In. I have tons of great memories from them. My first love. A cooler full of beer. Passing around joints. It was just a great place to hang out. I think it's sad that my own kids won't have any of the great experiences I had as a kid. It was a blast.

The child bride reference is about Jerry Lee Lewis, a singer from the 1950's, who married his 13 year old cousin. and also probably Elvis Presley with Priscilla , his wife who was like 14yrs old when they met. Check out Jerry Lee, he is a true original.
@mmomailman
@mmomailman 2 года назад
Billy Idol is a self proclaimed Elvis fan, it's why he does that thing with his lip (just like Elvis did), along with the Jerry Lee Lewis thing. Rocking (robbing) the cradle doesn't necessarily have to be a minor, could be a 35 year old and a 18 year old like in this video.

The reason for the thing of Billy in the pictures is becouse he had just had a motorcycle accident ..and was still recovering .he couldnt perform with his usual moves so they disgused it by putting him the artwork.

The guy was an uptight, successful late 80s yuppie (with all the trappings of that time down to the then trendy wine rack and the Julian Schnabel-esque painting -- the one where the plates fall off and shatter on the floor). And into his life comes the ticking time bomb of a hot under age girl. Yes, she's under age: she mentions living with her mom; rock the cradle is a play on rob the cradle; and the reference to the rebel's child bride. As others have mentioned, this is referring to Jerry Lee Lewis who married his 14-year-old cousin and his career sank like a stone after that. This rich, uptight guy in the video does not want to fall under the spell of the young girl in his apartments and lose all of his nifty late 80s/early 90s crap. 😂

"Cradle Of Love" was Billy Idol's last Top 40 hit in the U.S., peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 on August 4, 1990. It also reached #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart on June 23, 1990. August 4, 1990 can be seen as a changing of the guard at the top of the Hot 100. "Cradle Of Love" peaked at #2 that week, but was kept out of #1 by "Vision Of Love," the first hit by an up-and-coming singer named Mariah Carey. As we entered the 1990s, the veteran rocker of the 1980s gave way to the new queen of 1990s R&B.

I love how a artist writes a song and people assume it’s from the artists’ point-of-view. He was making a statement about society, rockers and young women, er girls, he specifically mentions Jerry Lee Lewis who married his 13-year-old cousin when he was 23. Uf-da!
@carlmarks8170
@carlmarks8170 2 года назад
It's always been the way that people get uptight about lyrics in music. Just the mere mention of something and people assume the worst about the artist. But strangely, people don't feel the same way about Hollywood. In movies, they can exploit any subject they like for a dollar and show nudity, violence, racism, whatever... and people are just fine with that. It's just entertainment. Example: You can make a movie about nazis and people will give you awards. But if a rock band sings a song about nazis, then that must mean they're glorifying it and they are nazis themselves. It's a weird double-standard people have. (A better example is death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse with gore lyrics who get banned in some countries while horror movies with graphic violence aren't banned.)

This is one of Billy Idol's best songs. In my opinion. Also, my friend Steve has been the bass player for Billy for about 20 years now. Very talented man. The whole band is, including Billy. Billy played with some friends of mine, including Steve, well, because of Steve and the band he came from before playing for Billy. They played about 4 yrs ago at the Elk's Lodge in Santa Monica, CA., the band Seagull which back in the day was one of two LA bands to be in the Battle of the Bands for a record contract and Seagull, with singer Daire, bass player Steve, guitar player Keith, and drummer Morrey who were from Westchester/Venice Beach battled against another local group from a valley city called Pasadena who had a guy named Dave singing, drummer Alex, bassist Michael and guitarist Eddie, you may have heard of these guys called Van Halen. I think you can guess the winner of that Battle of the Bands.

I love this song and video by Billy Idol. I remember this song was released in 1990 after his motorcycle accident (Feb. 1990) that was really serious (he nearly lost a leg) and it left him limping with a cane for a while which is probably why they did this type of video where he appeared in the artwork on the walls, which I love by the way. I wonder if Brad ever heard the expressions "old enough to bleed, old enough to breed" and "if there's grass on the field, play ball". Ideas about who is mature enough for what have changed over time, and somewhat drastically in the past few decades. For hundreds of thousands of years, women were married off and started having children as soon as they finished puberty, so 13 - 15 was considered mature and adult. The 18 year old definition of adulthood is fairly recent in modern history, and extremely recent over the expanse of human history. It's interesting to see how influential social programming can be on our ideas of right and wrong, disgust mechanisms, etc. I think Lex got the overall feeling of this song correct though. Despite the reference to Jerry Lee Lewis, I think it's more about an almost-middle aged rock star having an intimate relationship an 18 - 24 y/o "girl".

Billy Idol is also known as a rebel for his song "rebel yell" -- Billy was badly injured in a motorcycle accident which is why he only appears in the paintings for this video. Billy also has said in interviews he thinks this is his cheesiest hit and mockingly changes some of the lyrics in the live show to make fun of the song. It was also a hit throughout 1990 -- his last big album before drugs and grunge made him less relevant. He had a bit of a mini-comeback in 1998/1999 after appearing in Adams Sandler's hit movie "The Wedding singer"

That's was actress and now director Betsy Lynn George. I believe that because of this video clip she stood out more or was in the video clip of Deep Purple king of dreams

I was Introduced to this song the best way possible. 6 year old me dancing with my 17 y/o Baby Sitter as it played on MTV. It's only now in my late 30s do I see the irony in this.

You can really write a single description of every Billy Idol song: -- it has a beat that will pound you straight into the floor, Steve Stevens, Billy's longtime six string lumberjack. will blow it up with some brilliant guitar stuff, Billy will snarl as only he can, and the song will be about Billy's complete and total devotion to all things sexual. Billy's brilliant, but he's not real complicated. And, yes, he should be in the Rock Hall of Fame. Should have been in there 25 years ago.

Billy has got so many good songs. His first band, Generation X, and his solo career had songs like Ready Steady Go, King Rocker and Dancing With Myself from both bands then Rebel Yell, White Wedding and Eyes Without A Face

Lex, I also told myself over and over again that the girl was of "legal age" when I first saw this video and thought "Oh, she's a naughty girl". 😂

I love to hear them come up with their own theories of the songs they react to. Sometimes the video has nothing to do with the song but they try to link it and sometimes the meaning of the song is right there in the lyrics and they’re totally wrong but they explain it with confidence.

Good on you for telling the truth! I am 40 and my last relationship was with a 21yr old...we had the best time, she was a fantastic person. But she'd had enough of idiot guys her age running around with their d$!cks in their hand, pretending they were the shizz and wanting to do the weirdest shit they had seen on porn sites. Rather than be choked she wanted to loved, can't blame a girl for that. :)

All the scenes with Billy idol - the pictures in the background, in particular - were filmed from Billy's hospital bed. He'd gotten in a motorcycle accident and so the director had to re-imagine the entire video. None of what you've just watched is what had originally been planned. Oh, and the girl? She was the daughter of one of the film crew and wasn't old enough to drink - which is why you don't see her actually having any of it (though she walks around with the glass).

You guys are great. I love watching you two react to songs and videos. Lex is always on point too. She sees every detail and always understands what the bigger picture is. She's really smart. By the way... The ball on fire/child bride part is in reference to Jerry Lee Lewis marrying his 13 year old cousin too, from what I've read. (Goodness gracious, Great balls of fire)

I saw him on "Soundstage" in 2013 and he still rocked the joint hard...was shirtless 3 different times and had 3 generations of beautiful women in the crowd just goin' nuts for him..he was damn near as charismatic as Elvis with the women.

I liked Billy from the get go. I don't know why. I wore out his CD in the 80s. I guess it's because he wasn't all Zippidy Doo Da like the other acts back then.
