80's clubbing was awesome ,all these great bands and dance music. I remember all the guys singing the "With a rebel yell, she cried" and then the girls would scream "MORE,MORE,MORE" . seeing several thousand people at the club doing this in unison made those nights even more memorable.

That's awesome! I didn't get to go out night clubbing til the 90's. There was an 80's room, but it wasn't quite the same. Sometimes the 80's room would be kinda gothy too. But most of the music was House & Trance & Dn'B/Jungle.

This was early eighties, the hey day of the electric drums, keyboard, synthesizer and key-tar (yes a keyboard played like a guitar). Billy Idol is not only considered great 80's punk, but essential 80's music. Also, lest we not forget Billy idol was the quintessential sex-symbol of the 80's. The funniest thing is that everyone says he is the nicest most down to earth person, especially to all his fans even now in his 60s.

As a latin man in those 80's, I can tell you we never danced to any rock songs back in the day. Dance music was extremely different in my area. Rock was great but not something to dance to. A good amount of the LA Socal dance music was to a different beat back then.

@taylorblackwell6554

To answer her question about what a rebel yell sounds like, I guess u can describe it a bit like taking the word(s) 'yee-haw', drop the ''haw" part, keep the "yee" part and elongate it like a loud screeching/screaming noise. The rebels used it during the civil war to scare off union troops, but the sound can differ in different southern states, or maybe you tube has versions u can hear. Love yalls videos!💜

Here's the story, which I already knew but was too lazy to write. Hahahaha!!! Here ya go guys, courtesy of the ol' cut n' paste. :p Mucho love from dirty jerz, Nickachu “I went to this party in 1983, I think it was one of The Rolling Stones‘ birthday, at one point there were standing in front of me - Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Mick Jagger, and they were all drinking this bottle of brown stuff, great big bottle.” “I kinda followed the bottle up to their lips and was just wondering, ‘What is this stuff they are drinking from this big bottle?’ And I could see a label, there was this cavalier officer riding away with a floom in his hat, a simple war cavalier… I could see the title ‘Rebel Yell.'” Billy Idol continued: “I was trying to write songs for the new album, I had no idea what to call it. So I said, I was fishing, you know. So I said, ‘Did you have this made up?’ They said, ‘No, no, this is something made in Kentucky…, it’s a Bourbon’” “‘But, ‘Rebel Yell,’ did you blokes think of using it as a song title?’ And they kind of looked at each other, ‘No, I don’t think we would use that.’ Of course, it was in my mind that I could use that, and I won’t make it about American Civil War. I’ll make it about a cry of love.”

You should go see what Billy Idol looked like. Spliked blond hair, with an angry wise ass face and tight leather outfits that often exposed his chest.. To me, he looked like a tough take no crap thug. With a touch of sass. If u get my drift. And he certainly seemed to live the image. It seemed every other weekend he was in the paper for doing something drunk in the village in NYC. The village, especially back then was known for being a counter culture type of area.

Later in his career, was on a live show- I believe New Years- that one was sort of painful to watch because he was so obviously wasted. I mean, WE were wasted while watching it, and we could still see that he was trashed. Still love him, though. He did a great cameo on the movie "The Wedding Singer", with Adam Sandler (great movie, and is sadly an accurate portrayal of life in the 80s, coming from someone who really was in the age group depicted in the movie...TOO accurate, LOL!)

I look at his songs like this one and see it less as him going pop, and more like pop catching up.

One of my faves of the 80's, my band played it back in the day - as others have suggested, the music video adds extra layers of awesomeness!

Billy Idol was punk rock, new wave. Dance-punk. He didn't have long hair. He had short, spiky, colorful hair 😆. Which is common in that genre. That's synthesizer you hear sometimes in the background. Many of us growing up liked Billy Idol music back in the days.

First, Brad, you're talking about the synthesizer sound for the 80's rock. Yes, that was a staple in that music. Next, for those of you love this song, you should ABSOLUTELY check out the Billy Idol acoustic version with just his guitarist. The guitarist blows it away, and Billy's performance is awesome as well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uJE0rnihZ2A.html The version of White Wedding is even better than the Rebel Yell performance.

Good Lord this brings back memories. Saw Billy live when I was in High School. The friggin Cult opened for him. Someone threw a beer bottle at him during the show….hit him directly in the forehead. He pressed on with blood gushing from his head. Dudes for real. The Cult rocked too. 🤘🏻

I saw the same tour. It was my first rock concert. I was stoked about both Billy Idol and The Cult, but my couple of friends with me were joking about The Cult before the show started, not realizing how much they were going to rock.

The techno sound is actually synthesizers. A lot of 80s music was synthesized. The Techno sound usually refers to the music from the 90s

Yes, I never really noticed as a kid, but my dad who loved 70's rock would often grimace at a lot of 80's music I liked as a kid mumbling damn synthesizers, lol

@Butt Whole true. The synths, like the music, evolved. 80s sound much different from 70s.

'Rebel Yell' was apparently I kind of whiskey Billy liked, and that's where he got the idea for the song
