Another true rock band that deserves to be in the RRHOF! Randy Bachman had BTO as well as The Guess Who and neither has ever been inducted. It’s a disgrace that his accomplishments in rock and roll have been ignored.

One of my favorite bands. Basically the song is about not doing the whole 9-5 grind for work. Being in a band and basically working for yourself. Taking care of business. You really hear it in the line It’s the work that we avoid cause we’re all self employed. We love to work at nothing all day. Living the rock star’s dream.

Ironic that this comes out of the same livestream as "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", since this is Randy Bachman's band *after* he left The Guess Who. (Who kept on well enough without him for several albums.) Randy doesn't have Burton Cummings's supple voice, but he's powerful enough, and his guitar work is still excellent. You could even alternate songs from the two groups, as you've accidentally done here.

I've heard this song probably 1000 times. It never gets old.
@BobSoltis1
@BobSoltis1 10 месяцев назад
That story about the pizza guy is a total fabrication by Randy. Randy tells a lot of stories that are just not true. Norman Durkee was a studio musician working in the other room and the engineer suggested that he play some piano on the song. He did write some notes on a pizza box to help himself craft the piano part that he plays on the song.

This song has definitely been in movies. This is what Wikipedia says: "Takin' Care of Business" has been used in multiple television shows and films, giving the song more recent popularity. It inspired the title of the 1990 comedy film Taking Care of Business, for which it was the theme song, and has been used in many other films, starring with Body Slam (1986), as well as major films like The Spirit of '76, The Replacements, A Knight's Tale, About Schmidt, Two Weeks Notice, Daddy Day Care, as well as the documentaries Inside Job and 20 to 1. It has also appeared on many television series such as The Wonder Years, Quantum Leap, That 70s Show, American Dad!, The Simpsons, The Sopranos, King of the Hill, My Name Is Earl, Parks & Recreation, Arrested Development, Cold Case, Men of a Certain Age, Supernatural, and Hawaii Five-0. It also appeared twice on the Cartoon Network show Regular Show, in the episodes "Tent Trouble" and "VIP Members Only". Also in Tom Greens "Subway Monkey Hour" as he performs it in a street. The song "Takin' Care of Business" was also used in the commercials for Office Depot stores, which used the name of the song as the chain's slogan in the 1990s. A small excerpt of a cover version by Thunderpussy was used in the 2019 film Fighting with My Family.[15] 4/15/22, 2:50 p.m.

Randy originally wrote this song in 1968 when he was in The Guess Who, he called the song "White Collar Worker" which sounded a bit like The Beatles "Paper Back Writer", not wanting to get sued by The Beatles for ripping off their song, Randy decided it just wasn't good enough to be recorded by The Guess Who, so he put it to one side. When B.T.O. were recording their second album B.T.O. II, they were short of a song, Randy remembered the "White Collar Worker" song that he wrote five years earlier, while he was listening to the radio when the DJ said he was "taking care of business", Randy thought that was a great title for his "White Collar Worker" song and the rest as they say is history.

This is a total BS story invented by Randy Bachman. Norman Durkee played the piano part and he was in the next room in the studio laying down some tracks. The sound engineer convinced Randy the song needed some piano and to get Norman from next door to give it a shot. Norman Durkee was really pissed that Bachman lied about his part in the song.

That was a mischievous prank that BTO had fun spreading. The reality was there was a prominent Studio piano player named Norman Durkee I believe and he was recording Jingles next door and the studio Tech for BTO noticed that and asked if he could come over and lay down a piano track real quick. Cuz they thought it needed a banging piano and so the guy only had a few minutes and they wrote the cords out on a pizza box and then he recorded it in one take.

Interesting that this was uploaded right after the Guess Who. Randy Bachman in the Guess Who started working on this song while he was still in the Guess Who but finished it with BTO and like everyone says, it's been in television and movies presidential campaigns everything. It was on The Simpsons, it was the theme music for Office Depot in the 90s, just everywhere. And the saying is older than that because Elvis said it all the time before that. In fact he had all these rings made up that said TCB and handed them out all the time and in fact he called his backing band The TCB band. Aretha Franklin also referenced the phrase and her hit RESPECT.

Rolling on down the highway in a 68 Mustang, blasting the stereo, listening to the pounding beat of an American V-8 . Lady with a halter top rolling a doobie in the front seat. Sweeet

Whenever he was on tour or in the studio, Elvis would tell everyone he was "Takin' care of business". He even had a big gold ring with TCB that he wore on stage. That's where Randy Bachman got the idea for this song.

Lex, "Little Gandy Dancer" and "Hold Back the Water" are 2 of their best that no one reacts to. We seem to have similar music tastes so I think you will like them. Hi Brad.

This is one of my top rockers of all time. Great message, too. Might be one reason I have my own business. Thanks for the reaction.

Seems the lyrics are from another time.It was issued in 1973.The first oil shock ,in 1973-74,when everybody in the Western World started to understand that ,well,one day,there was no more petrol,and see the petrol price going up, without the advice of the USA,the first oil shock changed our mind.Because soon,there was no job.So you were grateful if you simply had a job. But BEFORE the first oil shock,it was cool to not accept the so called stupid jobs,to live a real life,without your boring job,often in order to be creative(Here musicien life) I like BTO.And Takin Care of Business is a great Chuck Berry type song.The lyrics,for me,are connected to the Western World BEFORE 1973,when there was no question about energy,productivity.A world where you could have the privilege to refuse ,with a sneer,to do this job,or this one. Great reaction! I juste add that you did a reaction to a Sex Pistols song called Anarchy in the UK,when they shouted out "No future for you".This No Future ,back in 76,is a direct sequel of the first Oil shock.No jobs,social tension,poverty.

Hello Brad and Lex, I'm Andrew. I've had so much fun watching you guys discover all the amazing blues based HARD ROCK from the 70's and 80's. I'm sure I speak for a lot of old rock'n'rollers, but watching you guys brings me back. Brad, I love your appreciation of, and your desire to understand the lyrics. If you are not sure what a hard rock song is about, it's usually sex or rock lol. Like Highway to Hell, it's about doing 5 world tours in 5 years, simple as that. so Highway to Hell is about rock. Lex, you have a hard rock sole for sure! I know when you are gonna groove on a song, and I love it when you find all the hooks. I feel the same! I am Canadian, so BTO right up there with me. My #1 is AC/DC, I've seen them 12 times, best two hours of the year every year lol! If there's a hard rock group that appeals to you both lyrically and musically it might be Nickleback. They are Canadian, hard and fun. Most of there songs are light hearted, but the first one I will suggest is has a dark subject. Brad, the lyrics are clear and powerful, and no mistaking what the song is about. Lex, this song kicks butt! There's no solo, but you might not miss it. I know how much you love the solo's lol. The song is "Never Again" by Nickleback, enjoy!

I strolled through the comments and was surprised that nobody mentioned that this song was originally called White Collar Worker and was rejiggered into TCB by Randy before they recorded it. I thought maybe Lex was joking around with us when she talked about white collar workers...

Randy Bachman who is singing and playing guitar in this song was in the Guess Who which you just reacted to. He co-wrote the No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature song you just reacted to. After he left the Guess Who he started this band. They were huge in the 70’s. All over the radio back then.
