this is absolutely the truth... I too met Joe.... brought all of my Joe Pass sheet music books... kind of wowed him... and he signed it... "to Don, keep pickin Joe Pass" ... I framed it, and it's on the wall behind me....

Back in the Spring of 1976, I was a college Freshman completing my first 2 semesters. I saw that Joe Pass was billed to play at our Fine Arts Auditorium. I had heard of Joe Pass only from a record cover that I saw at one of my favorite music stores in Idaho. Because I was a student, the ticket was free - so I went. I was expecting to see a piano, a stand up bass and maybe a sax on a stand - but all that was on the stage was a chair, a Gibson jazz box, a microphone and a Fender Twin Reverb amp which was rented from a local store. Joe got on stage and played the bass line, the melody and the chords on various jazz and pop standards - I had NEVER seen that before. Being a rock guitarists, I realized I KNEW NOTHING.

I was lucky enough to pay with Joe in College stage band. I spent the day with him. He gave a great music lesson. And he had some life advice. A really generous guy .

I share the same regard for Joe Pass. I had that orange book back in the 70s too. My favorite concert was with Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, John Heard and Bobby Durham. And to top it off Ella Fitzgerald was there with her group. So, the night was split between them. It was in Devon, Pa. I forget the name of the venue, but it had a revolving stage. My brother and I were there, and we were making a lot of noise after each tune. Toward the end of the night there was a surprise when Joe Pass came out and did a duet with Ella! It was concert heaven for me!

I bought this guy's lesson on Truefire. I just do not understand when he speak of the erea of guitar neck he is iprovising in as "The area of activity" so I have left it in the corner of true fire waiting for the day I have learnt enough music theory so I can underatnd what he is talking about when he speak of a particular part of the guitar neck as "Area Of Activity. Great guitarist though.

My favorite JP album is For Django as well purchased at Capitol Records Building in LA. They had private booths that you could play any record before buying. in August 1966, I heard JP live at Donte's in North Hollywood and heard Joe many times after that.

There's a back cycling 16th note line in Django by John Lewis, which is the first track on For Django. I admit to kidnapping that line, and beating it nearly to death, and the beatings continue to this day. It's too funky to leave alone, and I'm not sorry.
