Also a backcourt play, a ball at the disposal of the thrower play and a basket interference play! Join us for a quick episode to get better as a basketball official.

If you have a question about a play, adding a timestamp (MM:SS format) makes a huge difference in our ability to respond. ❇ // WHAT IS HOT? 🔥 ➞ SUPPORT THE SHOW: abetterofficial.com/coffee?yt FREE TRAINING FOR NEW OFFICIALS: abetterofficial.com/newofficials DEEP DIVE ON NFHS BASKETBALL RULES: abetterofficial.com/studyguide2023 WALK, WARN, WHACK!: Technical Foul Mini Course abetterofficial.com/technicals

For the bonus play, I would have to disagree on that ruling. Yes, white #33 grabs the ball after the made bucket but IMO he makes no attempt to head to the end line to inbound the ball. As you mentioned it is a judgement call on the official's part to determine when they have access to the ball to inbound. If we are going by letter of the law then this ruling is correct, but if we are going by spirit of the law, then I think I would have let that one go. Thank you for all the content...I watch these every week...keep up the good work!

Yes. I would myself would likely have a delayed beginning of the count in that situation but we can't agree that it is just a judgment call by the official

Greg, I'm coming back on the court after a 15yr hiatus and love the content you are sharing. It has really sped up my interpretation of the rules (old & new) after being away from the high school game. Keep up the great work kind sir! 🏀🏀🏀

1:24 Play 1: legal. Ball handler needs both feet and the ball to establish FC status.

Greg, on the first play (explanation at the end) you mentioned that the play happened in Illinois. This is correct, but this was a tournament game with a shot clock. Therefore there was no visible count used in this game. Did the refs get it right? Yes, yes they did. 😃

Greg, Play two 4:33 the shot clock was adjusted to 30 seconds at the time the ball was administered for the throw in.

YMTC - legal. The ball never crossed the division line therefore never had front court status…not possible to have a back court violation in that scenario.

on play two - timing; am I missing a rule other than 2-10-5, allowing for game time correction? "...consumed time ... shall not be nullified"
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 5 месяцев назад
There was a rules interpretation issued that allowed time to be put back on the clock in this situation. Kind of a shocker but that is what the interpretation is. SITUATION 6: An official administers a throw-in to Team A, when the throw-in should have been given to Team B. A1 inbounds the ball to A2 and B2 knocks the ball loose. While the ball is loose, the official recognizes their mistake, whistles and awards the ball to Team B for a throw-in from the same spot. RULING: Correct procedure. COMMENT: A loose ball does not change the status of the ball as it is still in Team A’s control. The mistake can be corrected until the status of the ball changes. The clock should be reset to the time remaining when the throw-in was made by Team A. (7-6-6)

play #1 , if its possible to differentiate the half court line, its a legal play.

Mr. Austin, are there any play adjudications on the new backcourt throw-in rules. I am having difficulty understanding this when an offensive team commits a backcourt violation in the opponent's frontcourt.
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 5 месяцев назад
Hi vic! It's really simple actually any back court violation results in a front Court throw into the opponent at the nearest of the four designated throw in spots. You can take that onto the court with you! There is one super rare exception that I won't even tell you about because it's so obscure and no reason to reduce the clarity of the situation a back court violation results in a front Court throwing for the opponent it will be at the nearest of the four throw in spots.

YMTC - Legal play. The guard did not get all 3 points--both feet and the ball--into the front court

I am working to become an official and have gone through the course and about to take the test. I go to a lot of high school games and I see a lot of things not get called base purely on the rules. When I have asked about it the answer I got was you don’t call everything or you would be there all day. So how do you decide what to call and what not to call? Do you call everything you see?

Officiating is a mixture of science and art. Learning how to officiate with like-minded Partners appropriate for the level of play is something that comes with experience.

Play #5… is he allow to receive the second pass if he was to leave the floor…in this case he caught the second pass.

Certainly, since he was allowed legally to receive the first pass. This play was improperly ruled.

I disagree with your interpretation of the new rule for leaving the court. Just because a player's momentum causes them to leave the court does not mean that it was not voluntary.
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 6 месяцев назад
A1 takes off from inbounds, jumps over the end line, catches an errant pass and throws it back inbounds to teammate A2 in Team A’s frontcourt. A1 lands out of bounds and runs back onto thecourt and catches the first pass from A2. RULING: Legal. COMMENT: A player stepping out of bounds to make a play on the ball and then returning to the court has not left the court under the player’s own volition. The player left the court to make a play on the ball and is eligible to receive the first pass once inbounds position is established. (9-3-3)

@@BetterOfficials What if a player saves a ball from going out of bounds( and their momentum carries the player out of bounds) which he/she is the first to touch once they are established back on the court? I feel like there has been a lot of confusion about this rule this year.
