Ninh explains ‘Do the British actually like the NFL’?
It’s a common misconception that British Football fans actually don’t care about the NFL - that it’s a fad or a gimmick or novelty. However, is this actually true? With the recent news that the NFL is hosting four games a year, this has changed the landscape of the National Football League. There is serious speculation whether the Jacksonville Jaguars could move to London, England permanently and the NFL is seriously big business here in the UK. Ninh takes you on a tour of London and what it’s like to go to an NFL Franchise.

Germany had been the third nation behind the U.S. and Canada where American football is adopted and played for decades. There's even a football league there. Germans watching and playing this sport have been going on since the 1980s. Especially around Franfurt where the Frankfurt Galaxy were popular playing in the World League of American Football and NFL Europe. Why the NFL doesn't even have a preseason game in Frankfurt when they first started the London games is beyond me. Germany has since fallen recently to fourth place as American football is gaining traction in Mexico.

I think the idea of creating a NFL Europe as a “farm system” like the MLB does would be a good idea. Europe gets a professional football league, and it gives Europeans who want to play in the NFL a potential avenue to go down if they want to make an entry into the league.

As a Buffalo native and long time Bills fan, I I can say there are plenty of reasons the experiment didn't work. Here's one Loss of a home game. Bills fans will travel (ask Tennessee) but the atmosphere in Toronto was too.....blah. It was a money grab no one wanted, not even Canadian Bills who would rather make the trip to enjoy the REAL experience of game day in Orchard Park. Even players hated it, and were vocal about it, Basically, you were taking a game from some of the most loyal, passionate fans in the NFL and giving it to an indifferent, corporate group who would show up in jerseys of teams who weren't even playing. That's one reason Toronto didn't work

@@NinhLyUK It doesn't help that it was the Red Sox and the Yankees playing. That is *the* biggest rivalry in baseball, and easily cracks the top 10 (maybe even 5) across all sports. If it was a matchup of like the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers for a 4 game set (that way two games could be played under AL rules and 2 under NL rules) it would have been just as exciting (both teams have been decent in recent years) and probably cheaper (both those teams have a much smaller overall following and are not rivals with each other) It should also be noted that the MLB actually does a lot more travel away games. They regularly go to Japan, Australia, and Mexico. 1. I think it was on the Spurs youtube channel where someone went round talking to fans before the game last Sunday, and most of the people they talked to were Americans who flew in from the States or the EU (including the UK) and a few Germans who came in from Germany. There weren't many English people in the video. 2. The tribalism in English football is part of what makes it very appealing to people around the world. I am a United fan from Nigeria and I grew up with people who identified with one club or the other. Everyone was a fan of Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, etc. No one was a 'premier league fan'. When a rival team loses, you banter them. When your team loses, you get bantered. That is what makes the premier league fun to a lot of people. 3. What do the original fans of these MLS franchisees think about their team playing one of their 'home' games thousands of miles away? As much appeal as the premier league has around the world, I can't imagine Liverpool, Chelsea or any other Premier league playing a home league game outside their home city. I mean West ham fans aren't happy about having to go all the way to Strafford for a home game talk less of thousand of miles away.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 4 года назад
Thanks for commenting. 1) A news report can handpick the interviewees to show diversity. I can attest after being there in person that most of the people I spoke to (and indeed at that stadium) was British. 2) Whilst I agree with the banter part of your statement, my question is ... when does banter go too far? Is discriminating against someone who wears a different coloured shirt 'banter'? How about discriminating against someone who has different coloured skin? You'd be surprised at the answers people give. 3) Well, I wouldn't say no to the idea of the Premier League playing abroad. But it's a different system over here. We don't have franchises, these are all privately owned teams. The League can't make a team do what it doesn't want to do without consent of the others. Is to going to happen? Highly unlikely.

I've watched this video a few times and I love it. As an American I'm so glad to see England really starting to embrace Football. How England views the NFL is similar to how Americans view the EPL. The EPL interest over here has exploded over the past decade. There are hundreds and hundreds of supporter chapters of clubs over here (mostly fans of the big 6) Tottenham fan myself, but in the major cities you'll find fans of dozens of different teams in England alone. There's the International Champions Cup every summer where teams from Europe come over and fans from all around travel to watch, I've gone to 6 matches myself, 2 of them for Tottenham. Games are played in the mornings to early afternoons for us to go to the bars and watch. And like you said English getting disillusioned by soccer that's how we are starting to get with the NFL, MLB and sometimes college football. We are starting to get tired of the high ticket prices, non stop coverage of the same teams, leagues run by divas and controversy and the same teams winning all the time (which may not be the case for the nfl but for other sports) EPL to us and other soccer leagues are a breath of fresh air. As a Tottenham fan I dislike Arsenal and Chelsea but don't hate them like a Tottenham fan in England would. Glad to see you guys coexisting between fan bases which isn't the case in America with the nfl. America isn't a soccer nation yet but there is a culture and its growing. I would highly recomend you watch the youtube series by MLS "The Movement" is takes a give of mls growing in popularity over here and the supporter culture of teams. It's similar to what you show here in this video! Have a good one -Detroit Lions fan

There's a generation of fans in their 40s who grew up watching this on UK tv back in the 80s and early 90s. It was free on 1 of the 4 available channels. It was huge. Everyone had the posters, bedsheets, wallpaper, alarm clocks, rucksacks, sticker albums, t-shirts. It largely went away when SKY TV got the rights to paywall it. I like that the nfl is popular in england. Now I do have to say that there is a reason why no one goes crazy during rivalries, it's because it's just in the name. Eagles or redskins fans hear cowboys and they dont like them, other than that it's not a big rivalry where people talk shit or go crazy like in england. There's loyalty but at the same time teams move all the time especially in the nfl. That's what I love about soccer, I like the intense rivalry and the shit talking( of course as long as no one is getting beaten up or killed) when fans come together it's great but an intense rivalry is amazing. I don't think a London-based team is impossible or unrealistic. I do, however, think there would be some serious challenges which will require creative intervention in order to overcome. 1.) A London team will likely need a salary cap "handicap" unavailable to domestic teams. London players would have to pay UK tax, maintain living space in an extensive city in addition to their full time home, and would need incentive for family and friends to travel to see them play. 2.) In order to offset the travel and jet lag issue, a London team would need unique scheduling. For instance, have them start a week earlier and give them an extra bye week. Schedule games in consecutive weeks at home and on the road as possible. 3.) Get rock solid commitments for stadium availability, ticket sales, league marketing in the UK, etc - in order to ensure the viability of the product over the long term. There are a lot of attractive reasons to enter the UK as opposed to North American foreign markets like Toronto or Mexico City. The latter would make better geographic sense and pose fewer challenges. There are also built in fan bases in both Canada and Mexico. But, the "special relationship" between Britain and America cannot be overlooked. London is huge. It's an economic powerhouse. And it's next door to the continent. It's a step closer to making the American game truly global. It would take courage and vision to expand the game world wide. I would like to see it happen. It happened for baseball in Latin America and Asia. It happened for basketball in Europe and China. Why not football?

We don't have that experience in the NFL, not as a extremely large unit, so it's appealing, just like tailgating, rival fan interactions and NFL is appealing to others. I'm glad UK fans have the opportunity to go to American Football games in person. Here in the states, football (soccer) has gained a relatively big following and a successful league. It's sad to see that some people have dislike for a sport simply for where it came from, especially considering the history of european football itself. If you ever get the chance, you should come to an American college game. It really is a different atmosphere than pro.

Of course, with a London based franchise, that means the games have to be on BBC/ITV/C4/C5 due to the broadcasting contracts stating they have to be available free over the air to fans who can't attend (within a 100 mile radius but it's not like the UK has the affiliate system like the US, it's all national except for Scotland/Wales/NI). Games can be played at 1PM or 6PM UK on sundays and if a TNF/SNF/MNF was held in the US they could do what they do with stuff like they did with Rio world cup and do a full re-air of the game in the morning or a condensed 60 minute game (which the NFL already make available on gamepass anyway)

Ninh Ly Croke Park would be good but also have to get the GAA’s approval to host games or a team. During NFL season the GAA season would be over and there’s no concerts in the fall. With Aviva, Leinster plays most of their games at RDS and bigger games at Aviva and the National Soccer & Rugby team play their games at Aviva. When I was living there NFL gear was the most I’ve seen people where out of the big 4 American sports. The NBA was up there as well and NHL & MLB gear were pretty rare to find in stores. With Baseball all you would see people wear is Yankees, Dodgers, & Red Sox.

I’m sorry, but as a Mexican, I can let you say that Mexico City games have less impact than London Games. The first ever NFL game played outside the US was in Mexico, in 1978. It gathered about 30,000 people, though almost everyone hated it. The NFL attendance record all time is for a PRESEASON game hold at Estadio Azteca in 1994. We had a regular season game in 2005 that was played in front of about 103,000 fans. We didn’t have another NFL game until 2016, and since that year, tickets sell out in less than 3 hours.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 4 года назад
I think Mexico is a potentially huge market, without all the logistical nightmares of London. Why they didn't jump on this sooner is beyond me, because it's not like they have another football league to compete with (like the CFL in Canada). Soccer maybe.
@leanerbeastmx3674
@leanerbeastmx3674 4 года назад
Actually, we also have a very big problem with logistics in Mexico since we don’t have such thing as a highways to connect the airport with the hotels where the players usually stay and Azteca Stadium, and with Mexico City being the most populated city in the americas and also one with the heaviest traffic, well you can imagine how that works. Also even if you can get to the stadium with less than half an hour, light train and Metro systems collapse when it’s game day. Here we also have a professional league of American football which has a good relation with the CFL, but is more like a semi-pro league since the players get paid about 100 dollars per game. I don’t think that something as a franchise would work here, because people tend to be loyal to their team for their whole lives or even pass this loyalty to next generations, so very few people would be willing to change their loyalty for a new team. Also, even first division soccer teams suffer from financial and logistic problems, like the Veracruz club which hasn’t paid its players for about 6 months. Another reason that makes an NFL franchise in Mexico unlikely is insecurity, because I have to recognize that the zone where the stadium is, is well known for being dangerous, and even the soccer clubs that play there have their training facilities far from the stadium, and building some training facilities to an NFL level in a good location is unlikely too. So, even if Mexico has one of the biggest American Football markets outside the US, I don’t think it’s a good idea to have a franchise here. Also, most of the people who go to the games won’t have enough money to afford more than maybe 3 or 4 tickets each season. Even so, the NFL games here are a nice business for the league, because we only have one game each season and people try to buy their tickets as fast as possible. Maybe 2 or 3 games with different franchises would work.
