Hope everyone that was in the path of Ian is fine. I'm in Orlando, FL and I'm still without power but this is why we prep. But sadly our complex is still flooded and every single car is flooded. Definitely wasn't prepared to loose my car 😭.

When my grandma raised (or had) chickens--she never paid any attention to raising chicks. The hens did that. Whatever happened, happened. But there were many chicks wandering in her yard, anyway.

It’s interesting because people think (including me…or used to think…)that animals have those mothering instincts, and it’s always the same wonderful thing…butterflies and roses..but really in nature it’s not so picture perfect. Thank you for these videos!! 💗💗💗

We had an experience a few years ago with my kids little black bantam. I went out to take care of them one morning and found her sitting on 10 eggs, none of which were hers. When the eggs started hatching she wanted no part of them. So I'm out in bitter cold weather the first of February picking up baby chickens off the floor of the coop. I got in with five of them and got them all warmed up. My son-in-law went out and brought the other five eggs in but I think only one made it and it had spraddle leg. I raised those five baby chickens that made it in their half bath in a Rubbermaid container.

I had mistakenly let a clutch of cockatiel eggs go to long before boiling to allow momma to get brooding out of her system. I heard a tiny peeping, we had a hatch, out of 8 eggs only that first made it. The momma gave up a few weeks into caring for the chick but dad kept trying to keep it fed and warm, then momma started attacking the chicks legs, thankfully the bird store we got parents at took the chick and hand raised it for us. He made it and he's a great bird.

We started homesteading this year and one of our hens went broody. We couldn't convince her to stop so we got a half dozen fertilized eggs off a neighbor. We thought maybe she would Hatch a couple but she hatched every last one!

I have 6 golden comets. They started laying at end of June. They lay large brown eggs and occasional double yolk eggs. Even got 1 egg inside of another egg(rare). They are very quiet chickens so are great if you have close neighbors. They don't go broody but I don't have a rooster cause I live in a small town. Since they are sex-link chickens getting only females is easy. They are calm and very tame. Love my chickens 🐔

I hear you! My fav comet is recovering from a vent infection and at night my shower stall is a "medi-suite" that I bring her into after having a mocked up playpen next to the girls during the day until Ian's remnants arrived yesterday; so it's 24/7 now until tomorrow when she rejoins the flock. She's been an ideal patient though.

It's Interesting I have been in dogs & horses since I was a little kid my family has raised and shown dogs for over 40 years. We would have a litter (sometimes two litters) a year. I have had experience with maybe 50-ish litters or births with dogs over the years. Some were large litters some were small (like singleton pups). What I find interesting is that no "litter" and mama are the same. And with all of this experience and knowledge, I learn something new with each experience. One thing has always stood out as a fact of life with a newborn puppies and the dam. When a puppy has something truly wrong with it, the bitch always rejects the puppy. No matter how many times you find the puppy pushed away from the other puppies, and the heat source being the mom or the heating pad under the whelping box, you spend all of this extra time putting that puppy back on the mom's tit or with the other puppies... If you leave and come back to the room the puppy has been pushed away by the mother again. We always put tons of time and effort into saving these rejected puppies. And not once has one of these pups made it into middle puppyhood. Most of the time they die only days or at a few weeks of age. Occasionally they will make it past 7 or 8 weeks only to die or to be put to sleep by the vet at about 12 weeks or so. What holds true with all of these puppies is that the dam/bitch knew she had the instinct to reject the puppy. She even "fights" you about taking care of the puppy. You turn your back and she has pushed the puppy away -again- It is amazing and sad at the same time. The mama dog knows and rejects, and they have always been correct in the "knowing" But we humans work so hard to keep life going. We have this hope that the mama was wrong and that we can fix it.

Hey PATARA, when we have a peep trying to get out of shell, I wet my finger and keep that membrane damp. We just use a lamp and keep a damp cloth covering it. If the membrane dries they can't get out. We have even used a tweezers to pull just a bit of shell off. Our chickens have even hatched out duck babies!

Thanks for sharing this. I'm hoping next year I can have babies hatched by my hens instead of buying them. I went to close up the coop tonight and on my barred rock's fell off her roosting bar and caught her beak on a nail and it went straight through. We got her pulled off. The beak is still intact but some is broken. I'm hoping it heals. This reminds me of rabbits. One of my rabbits had a litter back in June. She ended up eating them over a few days time. Very hard to explain to a 7 and 8 year old.

I had a hen with wry tail and she insisted on brooding. I broke her up several times and a couple weeks later she's back on the nest. I was just about to go to TS and get her some chicks, but I went out to fill the feeders and give fresh water before I left. I checked on the coop and she had her head tucked under her wing and was dead. I have mentally kicked myself so much for letting her brood herself to death. She was adamant she wanted to be a momma, but I didn't need more chickens. She was one of my sweetest most docile hens and I wouldn't have ever wanted to lose her 🤢 I will never let a hen do that again, if I can't get chicks I'll get her some fertile eggs.

We have been lucky with a GREAT broody mamma, a Jersey Giant named Puma. Sweet shy girl she's a treasure. Farm life isn't always rainbows thats for sure. Its fascinating, all the things they do. I have a killer hen she goes broody after another hen does. Problem is she will start to peck eggs that are ready to hatch and attack any chicks hatched. We separate the broody momma. And this year we incubated because it was total chaos in the hen house they were stealing eggs and sitting in them our killer hen decided she would sit on eggs and started taking out any chick hatched . This now have 12 healthy chicks from incubation.

We've had more problems with our bantams attacking their chicks than any other of our chickens. Last summer 4 of our bantie hens hatched out 4 clutches and all ended up dead. We figured out which hen it was who was killing all of the chicks and locked her out on the next go around. The other hens took the chicks in and raised them without problem.
