Broody hens are worth their weight in gold!!! Whenever people complain about them I say, “I’ll buy her!”. They have a better hatch rate than an incubator and teach babies about life!!

Patara I want to share something with you and everyone remember this....birds fly to water at night, and away from water in the morning. So if you are out trying to get somewhere and need water. That's how you will find water, watch the birds night and morning

A farmer friend of mine buys chicks each year, in 2020 one summer day she heard baby chicks chirping so she went to see and lo and behold she had 10 new babies, and some how her neighbor, had a rooster that visted her Hen, was funny to hear the story and her hen was a great mom.

I remember my Grandma warning me as a young child to stay away from the brooding geese, but of course, I didn't. They about ate me up! Good brooders are EVERYTHING on a farm! Especially with the price of birds these days and you don't know what's in them!

We got started on our chickens last year and purchased 4 young hens. One of the hens became broody almost right away. I have been having to get her off the nest twice a day just so she will eat and drink. Finally we decided to get some more chics in hopes of getting her a rooster so she can have her some babies! Bless her heart! She knows that's what she is supposed to be doing.

I agree with totes. I've picked up totes at the dump just because they don't have a lid. I use chicken wire, frame it with two by twos into a door looking frame. Fits perfect and reusable. I also use totes for injured animals and kittens being born.

My hubby made me a coop back in 2009 for our first chickens. Silkies 8L 'x 8'w x10' H and I had a broody charcoal hen and a Buff hen everytime other hens laid eggs...they would take them.... lol so we would make our chickens a nursery...lol.. We always closed off with a 3x6 part of the coop for them with a home made 6 ft gate till "their" eggs hatched and when they were about 2 weeks old we would open the gate for moms and babies. My hubby made me a candler and that was so awesome to candle the eggs...life is beautiful. I still have some old girls that are Polish. I enjoyed watching your chickens coming out. When my Rooster crows he does the get smart theme song...lol ....love the video ...see ya on the next one !

Thanks, Patara! Seems like every time one of our girls goes broody we don't have a rooster. Ugh! One time we added a fertilized egg to one girl's unfertilized clutch so she could actually hatch one. There was no fooling her, though! The next morning that egg was gone, never to be found! 🤣😂

My black orphington hens are the most broody hens I have. 2 will sit on the same eggs in the same box if I don't split them up. Ms. Margaret is the biggest one, and she went broody without me realizing it, and apparently didn't leave her box to eat. I noticed her comb turning white so I got her out, separated her from all hens and eggs until she got healthy again. As soon as she had more eggs, she was right back at it, so she stays in mama mode. I have a separate stall for her now. I've always used tubs for nesting boxes, so I just moved a fresh one to the empty stall, where she's separated and safe with food and water and give her a few eggs to hatch. I do have to monitor her food, to make sure she eats bc she will stop eating in a quick minute! But she is definitely my best chickie asset. I know anytime I need new chicks, she's up for the job! She also will sit on anyone's eggs, anywhere. She'll let other hens come in and lay, and also let them sit with her on the clutch. So she has to be in solitary lol. Love this info, thanks so much for sharing! I'm letting her hatch some now so we shall see soon!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

What a great idea. Thank you for sharing the tote brooder set up. Much better than what I've been using. We have a nice incubator, but I'll be the first to say that I get a far better hatch from my broody hens than I do in the fancy box. The chicks hatched by mom are way more healthy and thrive better than those hatched in the incubator. We are heavily dependent upon our chickens on the farm, so we use both methods, but those birds hatched by momma bird then to live and thrive better than the others. Again, thanks for sharing.
