@@Ariadne4 being an idol means you have to sacrifice your whole life for the public and the worse thing is that you'll have a relatively short span of (possible) success. Many, many of them suffer a lot just so they can be famous for some years. If you think that's ok, good for you. Fans have literally no idea what's going on under all those fake smiles and performances... Also, they're incredibly oblivious on how TV shows work. I find it fascinating that they identify as "Canadian" even though they were born and raised in Korea. Ironically, it makes me wonder if they'd identify more as Korean if they grew up in Canada. I remember watching an interview of French/Koreans who grew up in France, and they said they identified as Korean. 😅
@yanna6815

I can see how that would happen because of racism probably... I'm a French mixed child (half white half black) and I grew up in a rly diverse community where no one has ever questioned whether or not I was French. I guess it depends on your environment 😕 (also probably never experienced racism bc I look more white tho)

It’s probably because people would put that type of label on them and say they are Canadian. in Europe, there are (and I kid you not!) third-generationers who rather identify with their family's "root country" than with the country they themselves as well as even their parents were born. So that was not surprising to me at all. It has little to do with "racism" or people being mean to you, but more with your family bond, how your family tackles integration, what kind of thinking you inherit from your family, how close your family wants to keep in touch with the root country etc.. It also has benefits, for example that the original language gets passed on and is being accepted more easily by the new generation.

Somi looked Korean too growing up. Look at her sister. But now with full growth, makeup and coming into her body she looks fully european. Girls need puberty to look like themselves. Boys faces don’t change as much from puberty, only body does. By the time she hits 15, with her natural strawberry blonde hair, she’ll be looking totally Canadian like Somi or Nancy. Sienna will always have naturally light hair, be much taller than Korean girls, and grow into her natural double kids. The reason you think she looks “Asian” is cuz Kpop idols try to look so European with their eye surgeries, thin nose surgeries and unnatural light dye jobs.

I always find the ‘foreigner’ culture in Korea interesting. In Australia, as soon as you speak the language or wear our clothes (togs & thongs anyone? lol) we consider you Australian no matter your ethnicity or origins. It actually feels like an insult to call someone a foreigner or ask where they’re ‘originally from’, like it implies they aren’t meant to be here or something. Yet in Korea even if you’ve lived there your whole life, you are still considered a foreigner if you don’t LOOK ‘Korean’, and you’ll always get called a foreigner to your face. Han Hyun-min for example! But this isn’t discussing racism or discrimination, rather a note on cultural assimilation? Cultural studies just fascinate me haha Side thought tho, Hyun-min on JAYKEEOUT!!

Pretty sure all foreigners in Australia are labeled 'foreigner/immigrant' unless they commit a positive act or achieve something. Just look at how your media plays with the words: If it is negative news about them like crime? They are "Immigrants" and their ethnicity mentioned. Positive news like they won competition or achieved something? Call them "Australians" or even "Our Aussies"... So what you said is not completely true. On top of that, the comment above has a point too.

That's what you get when you have a homogenous society. What people fail to realize though - is that there is a difference between cultural upbringing & your DNA. In the case of mixed kids for example, if they grow up in Korea - they are 100% Korean (culturally speaking) no matter if some idiot claims otherwise. Your cultural identity tends to be stronger no matter what you look like.

@@yanna6815 If we are gonna label places toxic based on stories we hear, let's add Paris to it, shall we. Cause my friend who is half-French half-Japanese has lived his whole life in Paris and got randomly attacked by Maghreb young men a few times (cause he looks "Asian"). 6 months ago he moved to Tokyo and is finally free from his neighbourhood guys. He is not the type to make such things up, and he sounded really frustrated and a bit disappointed in Paris when he told me those stories. He said it's always the same kind of people who would attack him, and whenever he complained, he'd get shut down cause he's "white" and there can't be discrimination in Paris against him.

@@yanna6815 And how is it toxic to label people by their race/ethnicity instead of just the country they live in? I have lived in both Japan and Korea. However, I'd still prefer to be called my home country's citizen and my enthnicity, please, as I am definitely far far away from being either Japanese nor Korean. And even if I lived there for years, I do not want people to call me Japanese nor Korean. It is not "toxic" to call me by my ethnicity, as I am, in fact, born that way. The word "toxic" is being thrown around randomly these days and people keep confusing what they're actually against. Syntax error.

I’ve gone through 22 years mixed and the sooner you realize what makes you different is what makes you cool, the sooner your confidence will show outwardly. You’ll see once you get out of highschool, everyone tries their hardest to be different in college because it’s what makes you stand out in a sea full of students. Be just like Sienna, cause sooner or later, people will start LOVING you for being different and CONFIDENT!

This is really interesting to see for me, as I am half-korean, half-white living and mostly raised in a white country. I guess I don't really "pass" well as a white so I was always read as asian, but it was really hard for me on my visits as I didn't understand korean. Now I am learning korean since years in order to get better and plan to later also spend time in korea. But I am still at conflict regarding how I may be perceived there, not also being mixed but also homosexual. I am quite nervous if I think about my future sometimes, but also excieted to see how spending more time there will be like. In the country where I live I don't got any asian friends, also my enviroment in not very asian at all and it was always pleasant when in korea people would not always assume I'd be a foreigner (which here, where I live no one does as well but it's also more mixed/open society, still in my childhood I got to experience enough racism). Thank you for the video :) I enjoy knowing I'm not alone being mixed

I'm an American of German descent and I was taught growing up to never judge a book by its cover, as the young man stated. I believe growing up mixed can be a double-edged sword. There are definitely challenges but also benefits. I believe the benefits far outweigh the challenges. People may stare at them because the appear slightly different but it could be those people find them interesting and they might be envious. I also believe it is a huge advantage to grow up in a household where you learn 2 languages from birth. That is so much easier than trying to learn a second language in school. Being bilingual or multi lingual will open many doors for them later in life. They also have the element of surprise because others don't realize they can understand what is being said about them, until they respond in Korean. One of the challenges is racism. This is unfortunate but it is a fact of life for everyone of color or ethnicity. I believe these two will do just fine with everything they encounter throughout their lives. It is obvious to me they have great parents to guide them. Bob T.

My heart hurts for these kids, being a foreigner in Korea is hard enough but the sort of identity issues that must come with being mixed here sound so difficult to overcome. Especially when Sean talked about getting looks on the street, that's scary enough to go through as a grown adult (older people will literally try and touch me without permission like an animal in a zoo) but for a kid... they don't deserve that treatment and shouldn't have to go through that. It's psychologically damaging. I can only hope that Korea takes what it claims (an evolving society) seriously and actually changes these offensive and rude behaviors.
