so I had most of the cards for this deck but the fable and let me tell you, take it out. its not super useful in the deck because really DO anything, once its out it doesn't really copy anything, just slide in some more removal and you good

@@stoiccrane4259 I call them bots because that's how mindless these decks feel. It's like playing some tower defense game, where there's only some rudimentary algorithm behind your opponents moves for pushing everything forward .

@@robertchmielecki2580 Fair but it's a lose lose situation. In these meta mono-white, green, naya enchantment, esper and the like lack dimension and get boring quickly. However, when decks like Dimir Rogues, a tough but rewarding deck to pilot, from last meta are dominant a majority of the player-base get upset.

Before rotation last time they had a play pool for just standard 2018 and that helped set the mold and was a fun format until the launch of new standard. I hope they do that again.

Anvil was a big thing until the release of Streets of New Capenna, with all those huge/evasive creatures and ways to gain life that will easily overcome the drain from the Anvil.

I made a Boro buster to try glide through Plat considering the frequency at which it appears, as soon as I won too maybe 10+ games against Boros I never saw it again... Still climbed, but got a wee bit hindered by a string of full control decks popping up.

A couple days ago I got rolled by a version of this with Florian and anje which synergize really well with the deck. The anje is an absolute dagger for aggro decks and the Florian combo with anvil is so cool, but I've found it's a bit of a lightning rod because you don't have much else in the deck worth pointing a roil or dragon fire at.

I run my own version that switched out ob for anje to help with the aggro match up, and have been experimenting cutting a fable or two for Florian, but I'm a bit skeptical about Florian.

I would like to see a Brilliant restoration deck. I have a bant one that I am working on. It gets demolished by Boris Agro, but tends to do well against most midrange decks as it can outgrind most decks and most of its interaction is channel based

Had this deck long before CGB made this video on my draft account. Over 4X Sanguine Statuette I recommend running at least 2 Tenacious Brawlers to keep the card flow coming. Works especially well with massacre on board or Ob in hand to tribute for.

I've played tons of anvil. The statuette and smelter version can definitely be explosive, but it's also definitely worse overall than the versions without.

@@nottsfhj There's hope for it yet. I'm running Deadly Dispute over statuette but once the meta shifts this version of the deck may possibly become tier 1. I just hope there's a valid replacement for Infernal Grasp and Power ord Kill to keep flying threats in check. March of Wreched Sorrows just isn't it.

I play 3x Fable and 2x Ob-Nixilis for 2 Gift of Fangs and 1 Sorin, with 2 Goldfangs in place of the Infernal Grasps. Deck is already good against midrange and control, struggles with lifegain and aggro, gift of fangs lets your early vampires keep up with aggro better or you play it to kill their growing threats or neutralize a drop from the top of their curve. Also makes Sorin tokens 4 power flying lifelinkers. I actually like Sorin as my top of the curve, it sucks to peel him with a Synth but I can +1 him forever with everything else being mostly 1-2 CMC

Whenever I play an anvil deck in a legacy format, the first thing I do is replace the synthesizers with colorless 1-drops that just draw a card when they're sac'd. I know synthesizers can be more value, but sometimes they can also feel very clunky.

fable usually sucks against aggro as its too slow esp in multiples, which is all he played against, but its great against mid range and control as you usually get a 2 for 1 (opponent kills token and fable using 2 cards to answer your 1 card) and it helps discard your removal/sweeper spells as they generally target nothing against control

Man this was exactly what I've been looking to bud as far as rotation goes bc I think brothers war is going to be artifact heavy especially seeing karn as a Planeswalker makes.me feel like anvil may get some spicy upgrades....you can easily replace deadly dispute with reckoners bargain....then you can also use voldaren epicure and un lucky witness using the bargain to gain some life and draw two cards at instant speed

You can still run Reckoner's Bargain in place of Deadly Dispute. It isn't nearly as good, but still a solid choice.

Suggestion: I like that you're doing rotation proof decks but please consider keeping the mana base unrestricted, simply because lacking the best lands puts you at a huge disadvantage and can hinder your ability to showcase the decks. Plus, we will be getting new lands eventually anyway. Nice job.

I kind of like the way he's been doing them. The mana bases are, essentially, OK except for the crappy tapped, common dual that's basically a placeholder for whatever dual is released into Standard next. While I'd like something to come in DOM-U I definitely hope it's not the start of the next cycle of good duals as having half of them in Standard for only a year (or having to do an M19/M20 repeat of the rare land cycle) would not be great.

@@krimhorn I disagree. The mana base didn't affect this particular deck that much, but it completely wrecked Boros and will ruin most decks. Playing without pathways, snarls and man lands is just unbearably bad in the current meta. In regards to the next land cycle, I don't see a way around getting half of it in the Dominaria.

@@dumplingdepinto I do think it would be great to get a Standard 2023 queue as we're approaching the point that they enabled it the "future Standard" queue the past two years (about a month before the next set's release) to put the manabases on an even footing. But, otherwise, the idea of setting himself a bit on the back foot to do something different is a fine idea. At the very least he's playing meta decks that already have fairly solved decklists if that's not your jam. If he were to do a "rotation proof except lands" and DOM-U doesn't introduce a playable dual then he's not done anyone looking past this month any service.

I've made a version of my own that runs with Dragonspark Reactor which is a uncommon that saids "whenever a artifact enters the battlefield a charge counter on it and if you pay 4 sacrifice DSR and it deals damage equal too the number of charge counters too target player and target creature" I've won quite a few games with it but I don't feel is necessary add but it does help

Only place I don't find boros in standard is off the ladder, where somehow I get matched with counter piles.... So standard for me is either boros or anything with blue...

The Boros meta is pretty bad right now, but there are answers that will make it easier to handle with some midrange decks once rotation happens. We'll also see which cards break the meta once Dominaria United gets released.

I prefer ob nixilis as a 1-of. Like he can help you get in the extra damage for sure, and those devils can be valuable when you’re just behind. But he’s terrible when you’re losing and have no creatures on board, and he’s best when you’re just ahead and need a little distraction to help develop your oni engine and get in a bit of damage.

Can confirm, I've been playing Ob as a 1-of & I've never had a situation where I've needed him & he wasn't there. Instead of the 2nd ob, I added a cathartic pyre as a scuffed 5th voltage surge.

Feels like Reinforced Ronin should be in contention for a one drop here instead of Experimental Synthesizer. It puts damage on the clock quickly and can trigger anvil every turn without a sacrifice so you can speed up the clock or build blockers.

I know you are a much better player than I am but I can’t figure out why you didn’t hold up mana for that infernal grasp to kill the dragon before it attacked in the last game? What did I miss?

I thought he explained it fairly well in his commentary, but he was essentially betting on them being smart enough not to cast Invoke Justice into open black mana. So if they are that smart, they just keep playing lands and controlling the game while you waste turn after turn just holding up mana not doing anything. So instead of wasting his turns he gambled on them not hitting an amazing spell off the velomachus hit and then killing it the next turn after he had the goblin generating treasures etc. I think in this case, personally I probably would hold up the grasp though and hope they're brave/stupid enough to play into it.

The other factor that he didn't explicitly mention, but perhaps implied maybe, is that it's a reanimator deck that he was playing against, and he only had two infernal grasps in his deck, so the dragon will continue to come back over the game if the game goes long enough. So he felt he needed to get enough power on the board quickly so that he could kill them quick enough before they reanimate it a second time.

I've had fun enough with Boros smashing face to rank up at least for one season, and I must say it's impressive how you piloted this deck against Boros here. I didn't encounter too many Rakdos players during my ~250 games that brought me to Mythic, but I went 13-4 against them. Only matchup that was better for me than Rakdos was vs. monowhite.

@@canis39 Standard list, replacing just one Cavalier with the legendary flier from Midnight Hunt, Rem Karolus. Occasionally allows you to kill an Old-Growth Troll or Adeline with a Roil Eruption. I like it coz its evasive, something the deck lacks in. But it does less base damage than the Cavalier, so it's a bit of a wash.

the only deck that gives me problem when i play anvil massacre is the Crab Tasha... i hate mill.. but even so it is 50% -50%, specially when the opponent dont drop 2 crabs in the first turns

Playing in unrank seem to have way more variety than this. My guess is people just want to win/lose quick to rank up, then go to unrank and play something else.

Agreed, & I've really enjoyed playing this deck in unranked. I get to go up against so much variety & anvil still performs very well. Over the course of about 16 games, I'd say I'm sitting at something like an 80% winrate (though I'm not legitimately tracking it). I've had a lot of wins from behind, too. There's almost always a line with this deck... you just have to see it.
