degrees like history are for people who have trust funds, or they are so passionate about the subject that they don't mind working a low-paying job (if they can get one) after college. a history major can become successful, but it's usually in a field outside of history.

@@pongop i'm glad you understand the word "generalization" because all generalizations have exceptions!unlike you, many history majors struggle to get a decent-paying job after graduating. and *shame on you* for denigrating the working-class man. many people come from poor and lower-middle class homes. they study very hard to go to college and major in something like engineering or computer science so they can be employable, and have a better life than the one they grew up with. it's terribly disappointing that a student of history and social studies can have such little empathy that you refer to people who are facing the grind everyday and doing their best for themselves and their families as "monkeys." moreover, humans are not monoliths. just because someone is a businessman or engineer doesn't mean all he wants out of life is money, and it's grossly reductive of you to sweepingly assert such. take your degree and shove it up your sanctimonious, condescending, misassuming A**.

How do you study history without the graphic nature of it stress you out? History is fun to study even still. Some of the second-hand trauma evokes anxiety at times. Thank you for your advice.

Me personally, I just remind myself that for all the terrible shit humans have done, humans have also done some beautiful, compassionate, amazing things. Like, slavery was terrible but the fact that black people were able to rise above and persevere and create a new culture out of the bare minimum is so beautiful to me. I also like to use my knowledge of history to advocate for justice today, for example I’m a Palestine activist and part of a group in Spain that is helping to bring awareness to femicide (following my studies of comfort stations during WWII). You can’t change history but you can influence what happens in the future Even if you just become a teacher which many history graduates do (and what I plan to do) you can influence a new generation to be better people and promote The Good

You don’t seriously believe this do you? Or is this just a coping mechanism? You could easily acquire these skills by pursuing a degree that allows career opportunities. Let’s be real sir, and not provide false hope. I love your positivity and optimism though!

Thanks for watching. Largely because I spent a lot of time improving my reading and writing over the years, I can now charge a few hundred per hour doing reading and writing (I'm a solo attorney at the moment). It hasn't been bad result. Could I have gained those skills outside of a history program? Absolutely. But that's the same with just about any major. Though to practice law in our great system, you have no choice but to get an undergraduate (and law!) degree. So you can take that for whatever that's worth, too.

I know someone who got an art degree but now is a manager/software engineer at a big company. Degrees don’t matter as much as your skills anymore . He learned programming watching RU-vid videos now makes 200k a year . Anything is possible.

The problem is that no one is actually going to do historical research on their own time. Or acquire the skills necessary to do good historical research. The value of studying history on a university level (which, mind you, is one of the oldest fields of study in academia) is that you are trained by real historians and mentored in their methods. You could read a history book, sure. But are you going to write about it? Are you going to discuss it with others? Are you going to check and examine the sources it uses? Are you going to do your own independent research into the primary sources, make and argument, and compare it to other historians? For some, like myself, university is not about making money but refining the intellect. I don’t think there is a better major for that than history
