LOVE the Maas universe...all three of her series are like narrative crack!! But, totally agree with the 5th book in the ACOTAR series. #1 The main character SO got on my nerves! and #2, I don't need all the smut stuff. Just felt like Maas ran out of plot on that one and needed to fill up pages... If you haven't read her "Throne of Glass" and "Crescent City" series...they are just as addicting. Thanks for the other recommendations! Like you, Fantasy is my favorite genre, but you got me interested in the thrillers you mentioned!

Of your top books, I've read Remarkably Bright Creatures, The Silent Patient... Loved them both! Any of Neil Gaiman's books are excellent. My favorites were "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" and "The Graveyard Book" ... but I loved them all, except the Sandman ... a little too violent for me.

I just purchased A Court of Thorns and Roses. I can't wait to get started. My top book picks were A Fire Sparkling by Julianne MacLean, The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles, The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes by Diane Chamberlain and Have you seen Luis Velez by Catherine Ryan Hyde; It's about an unlikely friendship between a teenage boy and a blind elderly lady. Her caretaker doesn't show up one day and this kid sets out to visit every Luis Velez in the city to see if he can find him. His journey is very interesting.

thanks for the honest reviews. I love fantasy too , like Brooks, Tolkien etc but I agree with you, I can do without "spice" lol, it just gets tedious and detracts from the story for me. However, as you mentioned to each their own. Loved the recommendations, and will watch for more like this, thanks

Hello Neisha! My books for 2023 were mostly Christian Fiction. Julie Klassen’s Tales of Ivy Hill Series and others of her books, The Orphan Train series by Al and JoAnna Lacy, and The Sugar Baron Series by Lisa T. Burgren. There were various others as well. Thanks for sharing your list. I am considering reading A Court of Thorns and Roses. Some of the others you mentioned sound interesting also.

My gran left me several series of books written by Anne McCaffrey. You would love this series it starts with The Dragon Riders of Pern a three-book series, but has several series that sprung from the characters in those three books. It is the only series of books in which I have become so attached to a character that I cried. I will pick up The Forth Wing it sounds like something I would enjoy reading.

I've read several of your picks and have added the ones I haven't to my TBR! We have very similar (good) taste in books 😁 I actually had the pleasure of meeting Lisa Jewell at a book signing when None Of This Is True was released. My only regret was that I didn't wear double denim to meet her 😆 IFKYK If you haven't read The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young I would highly recommend that one. I think you would love it.

The ACOTAR series got me over a massive many-year-long reading slump and I've been running through books ever since. Love the Maasverse! Feel the same about Fourth Wing 1 & 2. I read the housemaid 1-3. They all have some interesting twists. I really loved the 1st book in the Red Rising series, it's very epic and so well written. It's not something I normally read but it was so good. I highly recommend. ❤

Only through the first book review but I already want to comment about long books. Are you familiar with Ken Follett? If you like reading giant tomes and sagas with a certain 're-readable' quality, check out his Kingsbridge series. It started out as a trilogy but then he added a prequel AND a 5th book. Historical fiction about a family saga that starts in the 1st century!! Also, you are the second person who recommended Fourth Wing to me today on YT. But the other person said it was more for younger people.

Obviously Lies My Doctor Told Me was one of my favs last year, you might have heard of the author. 😆 My favorite fiction was Alligator Alley by Mike Lawson, it's part of his DeMarco series and they are political thrillers. I've read all of them (new one coming out soon!) and they are sooooo hard to put down! You can also totally read them out of order and it won't make a difference. Usually the lead character, DeMarco, is trying to solve some crime for his boss who is a big wig congressman in DC. He gets into all sorts of circumstances and ofc you are trying to solve it before they actually tell you. lol

The book club I am in picked this book - A Court of Thorns and Roses. I have listened to maybe a third of it. I do not like it. I put it down. I've never read fantasy except 1 book by James Patterson - Can't remember the name. It is about children flying. Anyway, I am 76 years old. Most of the girls in my book club are in their 40's or 50's. The book club meets next week. Maybe I will try to finish it. I don't really blame it on my age because I have a friend my age who reads only Sci Fi books. This post does not require a reply. Just wanted you to know, I don't like it. But, I may try again before next week.

"5 spiceys" I'm with you though, I don't read romance novels so I don't need all that, I want the plot and characters to be interesting. You should come up with your own rating system, just like rating items on Amazon for certain aspects. lol I hate rating books on Goodreads because I feel like I don't have metrics to help me decide what the book is worth so it's just some random rating otherwise. P.S. I saw a video that I reported to YT about that I'm sure you are aware of from a few days ago, outrageous. I doubt they will do anything though, we will just let random people take over everything with AI voices and not show their faces. Chickens. Wait, that's an insult to chickens.
