Getting back to you. Did what you showed on your video. Drilled to 1/8" hole in the back of speedometer. Had to remove glass ,fog left a film, so had to let it soak in vinegar for about half hour. And got it cleaned. Rode to work then home at 2:30 pm that is when it would fog up the worst. And no fog at all can see everything now!! Thanks again for the video. Ride safe and enjoy.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I would liked to have seen where you placed the holes. I believe it’s critical to not hit the circuit board, so some precision drilling, and not too deep is needed.
Continuing to ride my 2019 FLHCS without any moisture in my speedometer after performing your recommended modification. The WX in South Florida has high humidity almost every day. This mod has solved the moisture problem! Highly recommend!!!!
Glad to hear yes worked on mine as well. Sometimes it takes a moment for moisture to escape and it is good idea to leave it on the sun for few hours after drilling.
Rode my 2019 FLHCS over 200 miles today in South Florida during high heat and humidity which included two downpours! Performed the modification as suggested and my speedometer did not fog up at all!!!!! When doing the modification, I wrapped several layers of duct tape around the 1/8 inch drill bit to limit the drill bit travel instead of using a dowel rod to control drilling depth. The speedometer can now breath without fogging! Thank you for a great fix!!!!
Thanks for info. Have the same problem H.D dealer said there is no fix but to buy a new one for $260.00 but it will do the same thing. I live down in Florida were it is very humidit. I will try this and get back to you to let you know how it works. Ride safe and thanks again
Good idea. Let it breath. Here in central Canada 🇨🇦 it gets a little cool at the beginning and end of the season. This should do the trick. Thanks for the vid. 😎👍
Just watched your video and had a go on my 2018fatboy. The only thing I did different was unplug my speedo from behind the speedo itself this way it made it a very quick way of removing the whole unit. This way you can turn it over which made it very easy to work on . Thankyou heaps as this has fixed my speedo. No fogging at all any more even after a long day in the hot sun . Thanks again Ray.
I drilled one hole in the corner of the square closest to the label. My speedo used to fog so you couldn’t see the bottom half of it. This completely solved my issue. Thanks for the advice.
I carefully drill two small holes as you recommended. Afterwards I used my small blow gun and purged the body out using argon hoping to remove all the moisture and then closed the holes with a touch or white silicone. I'll report on the progress. Thanks for your help.
Instead of using a drill, I used a a soldering iron. No loose chips and no sudden breaking through. I couldn't put a hole in the 2nd position. Something solid behind it. So I had to find a different location.
With respect to your video, if this two holes should fix the problem, I wonder why HD did not bring out a service bulletin to all HD dealers world wide, to drill two little holes in the speedometer housing. Done in 15 minutes. This problem exists since years. Many customers are claiming it. HD can't find a solution, because it is to complex. There is the heat from the engine, the sun thats heats up the speedo, if you ride and the cold air cools the speedo, moisture will be inside. And there are also some important points that have to considered. The electronic inside the speedo housing has to be protected agains water, that might flow into the speedo housing. Many owners clean the bike with water or even worth with a steam gun riding in the rain. The electronic has to be protected. I worked as a bike technician and owned a Road King and now a Softail. Both bikes had/have this problem with the moisture in the speedo. I do not think that two holes are the solution. It might work if you ride your bike only in dry conditions, but including all circumstances it will fail and you might risk a even worth damage on the speedo than the moisture.
Solution is not complex. Speedo should be sealed in dry (not moist) conditions to prevent condensation due to change of temperature - like watches they are exposed to all kind of temperatures and conditions and don’t fog because air sealed inside is dry. Read all comments under my video and you will see yourself what people say after drilling the holes. Touring models have holes in gauges by the way straight from factory. Hope that helps. It is easy solution that works. If water flows into speedo housing it means whole motorcycle is underwater and I will worry about many other things than speedo at such point. Speedo is protected by housing so no water from riding in the rain will get in. I rode thousand of miles in all kind of condition and never had a problem.
Thanks for the video. I ended up feeling a little further towards center and found that the home goes straight into the speedo, definitely have to be careful drilling into it that's for sure. Now to wait and see if it helps.
I live in Yuma, AZ. The bikes sat in the very hot sun a ton of days since i bought it 3 years ago, but it's funny you say that because it's actually raining today in Yuma. But tomorrow ill take it out and sit it in the sun. It will be back to being over 100 again I'm sure. Guaranteed by the end of the week we'll into 110+ for a few days in a row.
Seems like a good idea. I will use this should I ever have this problem. I have 120,000 miles on a 2004 Dyna Wideglide and have not had a fogging issue in the speedometer yet, but she got years and miles so could certainly happen. Thanks for this video.
@@RidersUnited That's is good to know. My dyna has been a exceptionally good bike. I am meticulous about maintenance, which no doubt has contributed to its reliability.
Thank you for a great video! The HD speedometer moisture problem should have been fixed by Harley, but has not. Followed your video and will be riding today in South Florida where the humidity is always high. Will let you know if the modification works. Thanks, Again and keep up the great videos!!!!
Sometimes it takes a while for all the moisture to escape completely but drilling helped me a LOT. I let my bike sit in the sun for 1-2 long sunny day to help initially help dry it out.
My Heritage here in Ireland has this issue. I will give it a try. I would recommend using a drill stop attached to the drill bit. A stop is commonly provided with dowel joint kits and prevents the drill from going too deep by clamping a stop on the bit, as I fear that an unfortunate slip could damage the speedo. I like your video - but try talking less and ‘getting down to business’ faster - I fast forwarded. Maybe rather than talk about the problem on camera show photos/videos of the issue and voice over.... just a thought. Liked & subscribed 👍
Great idea on this drill stop. I appreciate your comment on how to improve it, really important for me to hear such input as I want my fans to enjoy it. Appreciate it a lot man
How far into the plastic did you go to make a breathable hole? Obviously not through the speedo face ? And thanks for the helpful video. Liked and subscribed
Ty did the mod I was ready to buy a new gage fog stayed all the time I drilled the holes it took a few hours later the fog was gone its been over a month now havnt had any fog what so ever ty
My 2020 Harley Sportglide had fogging for the prevoius 2 years that obstructed viewing of screen. I followed your technique and after ~4 hours of riding the fogging is gone. Thanks!
I receive my new Sport Glide in November and it is good, to know the problem early. I have a second bike, manufacturing in India. The same problem. If they close the speedometer under high humidity in India, I have the same problem, the humidity can't go out. I am waiting now for new instruments.
Good video, and thank you so much for the tip, I’m going to try it and keep my fingers crossed it solves the moisture gremlin 😖. I just subscribed, looking forward to more videos.
Thank you so much for kind words and your subscription. Means a world to me.. Drill slowly and let the sun dry your speedo good for first 2-3 days after moisture escapes for good it should help quite a bit.
I have had the problem since my 2018 Deluxe was new had one speedo replaced under a=warranty and it was the same, I will let you know how I go with the holes in the back of the speedo
Please be so kind and report back. It worked for me for sure and I know few others that reported positive outcome. Try to dry it out in the sun for few hrs after drilling if you have a chance to get rid of all moisture.
I filled this video perfectly...unfortunately it still fogs. 500 miles on the bike. Mine fogs so bad I cannot read anything in the small lcd window. The rest of the speedo works great and is very easy to read. For some reason the only part that fogs up is the small window at the bottom. 2019 heritage.
My 2020 sport glide did it today, and left a big haze right over the lcd part. I have 540 miles on it. Not sure how I want to proceed but will investigate further.
Yer i have a 2013 HSC , mine has started to fog up the exact same way , bloody annoying , but i dont want to drill it like old mate suggests , so i am in two minds at the moment
I live in Rhode Island, USA and the temps have been in the 80+ degrees with varying humidity. I placed 2-3 gel silica desiccant packets (moisture absorbing) under the console, next to the speedo and condensation has NOT returned for over 250 miles.
Be very careful drilling the second hole. The one in the center was fine, but the other hole on mine looked like it had a circuit board right behind it if you go any deeper than just barely making the hole.
I like the idea of venting the area that contains the moist air. BUT, the drilling operation is extremely dodgy. The assembly of the units can be different for different bikes. The microprocessors can located differently increasing the chance of damage from the drill or plastic swarf getting into the unit.
I may have the solution. I put two small bags of moisture absorber next to the module. You get these small bags when you buy something, it's in the package... No more fog!
Right? Yes this speedo should be done or fixed for sure. These are old discontinued gas caps you can still score some if you ask your dealer for nationwide search of dealership-network PN 99537-96A
My HSC 2013 has only just starting to fog up at the bottom and is difficult to see the digital screen that shows the revs and time etc , the upper glass is fine , but its annoying not being able to see the digital the digital read outs , I really dont want to drill holes in my pride and joy in hope it will fix the issue , I am hoping the issue will just go away :(
So I tried this and must of screwed up because now the speedo is flickering and the needle is stuck. I am assuming I'll need to replace the entire piece?
Speedometer is well protested from normal water spray. Speedo is thin so located really high inside of console. Bike would stop running on air intake water leak first anyway 💦 😃
Do not do it. Didn't solve the problem. I made the roles exactly the same and this location shown is in an extremely sensitive place, over the speedometer coil and i was unlucky that the drill caught the coil. I had to open the entire panel and there was no repair😢. If the role was on the other side, nothing would have affected it, but it wouldn't solve the problem
You are correct that would be the right way to do it or seal it in dry humidity environment. Same happen to the watches if they seal it in different climate it might fog.
@@RidersUnited actually i did this last year when i bought my 2020 slim. Brand new and fogging. Specially here in new england climate. After that no more fog
As much as I appreciate your video on this topic, I feel like you turned what should have been a 4 minute video into a 14 minute video. Of which I didn’t really learn where to drill the holes into the backside of the gauges.
Yes I do my best to be more concise lately as it is part of learning for me as well. Location of the holes doesn’t matter much as long as you allow moisture to escape. In the video you will see where I drilled mine it is described @ 8:58 min mark. Just go slow as plastic is soft and you dont want to hit internals with sharp drill
This video was to long with many unnecessary explaining. Off with the speedometer, drill a hole, make sure not to hit something inside and that's it. Personally I would contact the Harley dealer and address the issue, I'm sure they have a solution for this, and you don't need to worry about the warranty on your bike when you do modifications yourself.
Thank you for watching. I am still learning how to do that whole YT. Unfortunately HD do not have solution for this issue and even if they replace the speedo it will fog again. As far as length some people prefer extra info if not it is possible to skip to part that is of the interest. Hope this helps.
