SUBSCRIBE Learn how tile the right way
In this video I highlight the problems with the floor, show what the results of the tear out revealed and finally show how to do it the right way with a new tile floor. This bad tile job did not come cheap. the tear out of the stone herringbone floor revealed that the installation was much worse than we thought, this floor would have failed in a matter of weeks. There was very poor to no adhesion of the tile to the substrate, some of the tiles were already loose and only held by grout. Tile and other materials were bought at a big box store, the installation was also arranged and paid for at the box store. The job is a total failure, was not installed according to proper methods, was also an extremely poor finished result with no movement allowed for, exceedingly bad lippage and everything else that could be done wrong, was done wrong.

@@John-e4p1x The previous tiles were barely stuck to the floor, and there was no uncoupling membrane either. See how Sal caulked all the edges? That accomodates movement which happens with all floors. You NEVER grout the edges, because that prevents any movement. The previous floor had no ability to move - which causes the grout to break and disintegrate, as well as tile to break and/or pop out when not properly set. The previous floor would barely last a year or two, if that. It truly would've been a disintegrating mess, on top of the fact that it had lippage everywhere and looked like 2nd rate crap. Sal and the homeowner did the right thing.

How can you criticize someone else’s work & then come in and install the floor wrong? You had the homeowner switch to porcelain tile instead of a natural stone but you didn’t flat trowel the back one one single piece of porcelain. Ant rep will tell you porcelain has to be flat troweled on the back. The natural stone is porous so you might get my without flat troweling the back. I flat trowel almost everything I install.

You can tell he’s collapsing the ridges because he squeezed some of the adhesive compound out through the grout line when he lays it down and the uses the sponge to wipe it off. Video is sped up so it’s kinda hard to see him collapsing ridges in detail, but the excess compound assures you it’a being collapsed.

I agree with caulking on the edge for expansion which will happen but even caulk yellows and will pull up in time . The joint seem better however it wasn't necessary to pull it up in 3days. Since your already doing work at his house a better solution would be to say I noticed the tile job and it's not correct when it starts to go bad call me and I will redo it for you. The homeowner should have watched and educated themselves in the first place however, they seemed too eager to buy some of what your selling. However, It's such an insignificant small area that he prob didn't care about the money. I thought 2500 for the first job was was way too much. @@SalDiBlasi I see you like to defend yourself which is admirable. No one said you were fishing for work. Also you didn't have to replace the floor. I see that you used Ditra which is good but a better more durable substraight would be cement board even if you have to deal with transitions. Also cement board is waterproof Which is best in an entry/ garage hallway if that was your area. I'm surprised the tile met the wood unless it's not 3/4 inch wood or another layer of plywood was added under the tile to bring up the grade. And in that case cement board was better. If the house was newer, floor is going to settle, so again cement board. Also, in any case I did not see you once check for leveling of the tile when installing. Assuming the floor was level after thinset, membrane than mortar is a big if. Floor looks nice but again it's only a couple days old. Wink wink.

@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 4 года назад
Depending on the type of leveling system, separate spacers will not be needed, however, I have found that if you use the 1mm version, and add a separate spacer, you get very few improperly broken legs that stick up in the grout lines, and if you do they are easy to cut out. Yes the snap cutter will save you a tone of time.

Hi Sal, I want to install natural stone/pebble tile on my bathroom floor. I have a single 3/4inch plywood over tongue in groove redwood on a raised foundation. I was going to use the laticrete self leveling compound then tile over a layer of hydroban. shoud I still try to use two layers of plywood? I think that'd be too much height to the floor...

Ummmm.... so what was the point of redoing it??? I didn't see any difference at al!!! JK,JK, Just some stupid Jersey Humor Bud!! What a difference. Saddest thing is so many homeowners would be showing the first job off & guests would be saying how amazing it looks. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!

Are you using the XL here in place of two layers of plywood? I heard you speak of it in the first video. Thanks Sal.

I was surprised that you didn't lift up the uncoupling membrane to see if you were getting good contact and full coverage. If anyone was wondering it take about 30lbs of of down pressure when applying the membrane to the thinset.

If the floor is very uneven and unlevel then a self leveling compound should be used. There are a bunch of videos on how to use it.

Anyone else that DOESNT spread that much thinset knowing I’ll do cuts in between?... that thing dries. Doesn’t stick the same.

Alot of bad imformation on your first video that had comments turned off..you said it needed 2 layers of plywood if you was gonna use natural stone..you do not need 2 layers,3/4 t&g is fine..you dont have to leave an expansion joint where it meets the hardwood..ive had multiples done for 10-15 years grouting up to the hardwood,no problems whatsoever & you dont need thinset under hardie unless your leveling a floor..screws hold hardie down,not thinset..id much rather use a screwdown hardie or concrete board than the orange stuff that only attaches by thinset bond only,that cant be good after its walked on

I can show you in the TCNA handbook and manufacturer recommendations that everything I said is correct and up to industry standards. I dare you to show me where what you said is correct, because you have it all wrong. I will up your 15 years and add another 20. I am assuming you have no idea what the TCNA is.

If you have a million dollar plus house why are you hiring box stores to do your tile? Also not all stores are the same some people know what they are doing

Im very curious as to the slippage you kept mentioning, and the placement of tiles next to walls with trim & entry door? Why is the barrier required? Ive never done that step except showers. Im about to put in an expensive 2x4 tiles in an 8x12 entry with shifting floors & trying to figure out how to put down at door entrance so its not cracked when the house shifts in mid summers!
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi Год назад
The tile trim is to protect the tile edge, especially if the hardwood or carpet is installed after the tile. Those guys often damage the tile.
