I use heat shrink for so many things. I can't believe I didn't think of this. You're a genius.

My son used my old, sun-damaged fiberglass handled shovel yesterday evening to help me with some gravel work. I was unaware that he was out using it. He came in talking about his hands and I mentioned I use gloves to prevent fiberglass splinters. He said, "Maybe we can wrap it with electrical tape." I told him it would just get hot, sticky and fail. (I had thought of the same thing, but decided it would not be a good fix) So this morning I woke up thinking about this, and got on RU-vid. Your fix ROX! I have two shovels that NEED this! Will order 3 so I have a spare. THANK YOU! (Oh, I've been told that I talk too much as well. Us teachers are like that...) LOL!

I’m so happy I came across this FANTASTIC video. My hubby left several fiberglass tools outside in Phoenix, AZ, the shedding is horrible, wrapping with tape doesn’t help. I’m definately ordering some. Is it easy to cut to fit the handle?

Hi. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed my video. Yes, it is easy to trim the tape to the correct size after installation. Her is a link to the product. AD amzn.to/3JeAkfa

Great idea. I use heat shrink on my aircraft cable keychain. You will have to replace it after a few years. Heat shrink loosens with time and abrasion because you are less likely to develop a cut in it than my keychain you can probably get away with just reheating/reshrinking it for the first several times. Have you thought about moisture getting stuck under the heat shrink and attacking your shovel head? I see that being a problem if the shovel is ever used for something wet.
@thejungleexplorer
@thejungleexplorer 4 года назад
All tools wear out eventually. This fix makes an expensive tool usable again for a good period of time for very little money. Unless you were using the tool underwater, I doubt there would be any moisture penetration. If the handle gets wet, it will become slippery, but all handles do to some extent. If it is a problem, I would suggest maybe rough the rubber up a little bit with some sandpaper or wrapping it with some durable tape.

@@thejungleexplorer I was more thinking that water would get trapped against where the head attaches to the handle and rust it away. Living in Florida a shovel is likely to see water and stagnant/trapped water is what causes rust. I wouldn't be surprised if water got trapped under there that the shovel would fail within a couple years. Maybe I am being overly concerned about it but it would seem to be the largest failure point for this.

Hello thank you and I have a question. Will this stuff work if the fiberglass handle is splitting going around it? Mine is a heavy duty spade with a plastic grip right above the head. Thank you
@thejungleexplorer
@thejungleexplorer Год назад
This will only cover up damage, it will not add strength or integrity back to the handle. If the handle is still solid enough to use, you might sand off and then apply this.

Just wondering here, maybe there is something like some tough furniture paint on finish or just some tough paint to get the same results. My hands are'nt as tough as they used to be but this Arizona sun has cooked off what used to protect those mean little fiberglass stickers from getting on you. And they will bug you for a good while.
@thejungleexplorer
@thejungleexplorer Год назад
I am sure there is some industrial epoxy paint out there that would do the trick. The problem is, you only need a small amount I bet it costs like $75 a gallon. The heat shrink tape is a much cheaper solution, unless you have a bunch of tools to do.

Is the 1.5" tubing the size it shrinks to or is it the original diameter of the tube before you heat it up?
@thejungleexplorer

The original size of the tube.
@SLM-ri2ph
@SLM-ri2ph 4 года назад
@@thejungleexplorer Okay, thank you. The handle we have is 1.5" at the top of it (the widest part) so was debating if that sleeve would fit over. The rest of the handle is closer to 1 3/16 width. Just wanting to verify it is similar to how you measured. And fiberglass in the palms is terrible so happy to see an easy fix!
@thejungleexplorer
@thejungleexplorer 4 года назад
@@SLM-ri2ph Yes. This is the best way to fix this problem. It has been over a year since I made this video and I have zero problems with this shovel and have done other implements the same way. I like the feel of the rubber a lot.
@SLM-ri2ph
@SLM-ri2ph 4 года назад
@@thejungleexplorer Yes, it makes sense. I just wanted to make sure the 1.5" would fit our handle (it has that thicker grip up at the top similar to the one in your video). Have you ever applied the heat shrink using a heat gun rather than a torch?

I personally dont like fiberglass handles. They dont last as long and break easy. Then when they do break they shatter. I only use them when it's all I have.
