Mamiya RZ67 Pro II medium format film camera. 6x7 film camera which is great for portraits especially with the Mamiya Sekor 110mm f2.8 lens. Mamiya RZ film back rotates and I use 3 film format versions - 645 Mamiya RZ film back, 6x6 Mamiya RZ film back and standard 6x7. The video talks about the Mamiya RZ WLF (waist level finder) vs Mamiya RZ prism finder for portraits. I share some of my Mamiya RZ67 wedding photos, a street photography shot and my Mamiya RZ67 portrait images. See link below for a Mamiya RZ67 vs Hasselblad comparison and shoot out blog post. Some people shoot Mamiya RZ handheld or with a tripod but I much prefer a carbon monopod.

Hey Erick, thanks! See the link to the MrLeica.com blog below the video if you want to view photos from the RZ in full res. Great cameras. See the Mamiya 645 video if you want something smaller or the Hassy videos if you prefer 6x6..or say the Mamiya 7 for non-portraits or Fuji GF670 for 66 & 67 formats :)

This video and looking at some of my old pics make me miss my RZ67 immensely. Had 3 backs, a Polaroid back, 3 lenses all perfect. Sold it like an idiot. Some of my best photos hands down.

Matt, I shoot an RB and finally broke down and bought an SD back so no longer have to always worry about light leaks. Added a split prism finder and that now allows nailing focus. But thanks for the suggestion for the monopod. Had to scrounge around in my closet for the one I hardly used. Has a steel screw so not only do I now have something lighter and more portable in the field to stabilize the camera, I can do my Ansel-over the shoulder tripod carry and that balances the camera and makes it easier to transport for field shoots. When I look at a RB/RZ image, it feels like you could just fall into it. I can print my 645's digitally to 24x36, but the tonal transitions and feel of these negatives is absolutely gorgeous. You have me shooting tmax 400 along side portra 400 in 35 and can print those to 20" especially with some topaz gigapixel ai upscaling. But for those special shots, it's the RB all the way. Otherwise, field or walk abouts for mf the 645 pro tl.

Great stuff! Yes I can picture the Ansel vibes now ha! I tend to be shooting a lot of 35mm film currently (Leica M3 mostly) but I still have these bigger formats and agree they just have that special depth look! (See my Pentax 67 video/ portraits, you'll probably be able to relate)

Thanks for the review. I'm inspired to look for an RZ67! Can you explain your preference for the 110mm vs. the 90mm, and how do you feel about the 65mm for portraiture in terms of sharpness and contrast.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 3 года назад
Thanks :) the 110mm is f2.8 so seen as the main portrait lens. Small too. 65mm is great for wider shots. See blog for examples, full res.

Hey Matt, Thank again for this great review. 2 questions, would you put any filters onto these lenses? or are they self sufficient and very low flair capabilities. Secondly, because it does take a battery, do they tend to break down easily? or have any issues with them? or are they very solid in terms of build quality. Many Thanks
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 3 года назад
Phantomised818 Hi, I’ve never used filters and rarely use hoods on this camera so the lenses seem pretty good without. I have had one RZ die on my bit because they are modular you can pick up another body section quite cheap. Hassy have issues to, I’ve had 2 repaired. Expected with old cameras.

Hi Matt, thank you for the excellent content, I want to get a 6x6 back to my RZ67II, Did you had to add a different Matte Focusing Screen for yours to be able to see the frame lines, when you shoot in 6x6 format? Thank you again for your reviews!

I own a Mamiya RZ67 too. But I don't use it very often because it's really heavy. I prefer to use it with the auto exposure prism finder, which is also very heavy because it has a lot of glass in it. This camera gives you fantastic results, but it's unusable handheld. And 10 Pictures per film is a hard limit if you use 6x7 which I love. I used it a lot a view years ago before I owned my Leicas. I think you can get a lot out of 35mm mm with the right glasses and film stock. And the quality is still better than most of us need.

Very nice video, I’ve discovered this camera only recently (after buying a Mamiya ZD and falling to the floor at the quality of the pics coming out from that old-22MP-only “piece of old junk”) and it got me so intrigued that I decided to take the plunge and just ordered a Pro II, which I plan to shoot mostly with my digital back (I know there will be a significant crop). Do you have any experience in shooting your RZ digital? Is there a way to tell the AE prism finder the ISO you will be shooting at since they are usually set on the film back? If you put a film back, set the ISO and remove it, does the camera “remember it” until you change it or with a digital back on a non-D model the AE feature is basically useless and you are forced to use a light meter all the time?

Do you sometimes use flashes/strobes with film cameras? Nowadays film and developing are so expensive I was wondering what would be the best workflow to get precisely what I have in mind. So far, the best idea I got was to shoot with a digital camera first to get in the ballpark and write down the settings of the digital camera, then transfer them to the RZ... How do you achieve good results with flashes?
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 2 года назад
Hi Sam, yes I still use strobes. I show a lot of this stuff on Patreon. The next video is tips on strobes from Poland to follow the BTS model shoot I posted yesterday. Yes I shoot film & digital or you can use lightmeter. Contact me via MrLeica.com/zoom if you want to put together a check list so you don’t waste film.

@Matt Osborne which prism finder do you use on the Hasselblad? I am surprised to hear it has such a big difference with the Mamiya as it's ultimately screens and mirrors; not that much technology into it.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 3 года назад
Nico Cazals it’s a good point. I started with the RZ and then bought a Hassy. I could literally see nothing to focus on. Really bad. I bought prism and that helped a lot and later bought better screens. Today my eyes are used to Hasselblad and I’m fine with them but I do t like that if you view the screen at a slight angle you can’t see to focus (with WLF). (I shot a vintage TLR and Hassy together a few days ago and the Blad was better by far.

Congrats with this great channel. I would like to know how the mamiya and hasselblad compairs to the pentacon six? I have shot 6 rolls on my pentacon six that I bought with 3 lenses, the flektagon 50mm f4, the 80mm 2.8 and the 180mm 2.8. I love the 50mm but did not like the 80 and 180 and sold them. If the light was hitting these lenses the image was washed out. How is the image quality compaired with the much more expensive medium format cameras? Maybe good for a next video. Thanks
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 3 года назад
jsengxx hi! Mamiya offer the best value, or did. Prices went up. The lenses are excellent for both Mamiya and Zeiss. For me the Hassy has more 3D pop which I like. If you review the images on the MrLeica.com blog for both cameras you can see. Very sharp, good contrast. P6 is fun, I have one. I had spacing issues in mind so swapped to using my Kiev88 (with a P6 Mount - conversion), and used happily for a few years, see ARAX-CM on blog. That said after then going to Hassy one day I thought I’d use the old Kiev. It was so impossible to see to focus in comparison. Not used since. Hassy are expensive for a good reason 👍🏻

How do you compose with the 6x6 and 645 backs? That’s why I haven’t bought any. I only use the 6x7 backs with it. Do they sell a mask for the focusing screen? Or you just calculate the frame?
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 2 года назад
Hey Pablo, sorry for my late answer. I turn the RZ67 mask to give a vertical 6x7 crop (in the finder), then I know the width is 6 so I just visualise a square. (Easy to do). For 645 I use the same, use the 6 as the long side then centre my image with a narrow composition to estimate the 4.5 . (You can get masks too I think but might be hard to find/ expensive these days).

What is required to use a third party digital back for the Mamiya RZ67 Pro and Pro II? It is quite confusing which kind of adapter frames and cables are exactly required for different kind of commonly used digital backs. Hard to find this info as summary anywhere online (maybe a good suggestion for a future video?).

Thanks Martin, I would cover it if I used it myself. I have no experience in this sadly, the closest i've been is the digital H3D-31 I used to use before the H2. You could try contacting Mamiya directly?
@MB-or8js
@MB-or8js 3 года назад
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks, Matt - no worries in this case. Due to the large amount of current and older digital backs, there seem to be a variety of ways how this can be done. Unfortunately RU-vid videos don't cover this too well - they are all specific just to one digital back system only each time. I stopped researching more about it after realizing that the "affordable" backs have a quite small sensor which takes away the film size advantage.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 3 года назад
@@MB-or8js Yes you find that out quite quick that you pay a lot of money for something no where near as good as just shooting film, espeically if used to say 6x7 format.. by then putting a 'crappy' smaller than 645 crop back on it, you totally change the look and use of the lenses and whole camera. Shallow DOF is gone and lens FL all change.. 645 cameras with digital backs are better IMo as at least digital is getting/got close to a similar crop.
