I have been researching how old my small collection of Abingdon King Dick spanners are. I know one of them was made some time between 1881 and 1885 but I wasn't sure when the others date from.
When the car boot sale/flea market returns I will be out there looking for more examples especially a 9" version (Which appears to be quite rare) and the slim jaw 1933 model. The 1933 type was sold to the Air Ministry from what I read and may be rare find too.
You can take a look at the preview version of the adjustable spanner history book here...

Interesting history! That adjustable spanner book looks like a good resource!

I've had one for years and didn't know the history, but mine says British Made instead of King Duck, which I assume is a copy?
@NashRathbone
@NashRathbone 2 года назад
I have several of copies like yours. During the war King Dick spanners would be stamped KD and sometimes War Finish, these spanners usually have quite a rough finish too. Thanks for watching 👍

Any tips for straightening the head of the spanner? Mine doesn’t close the jaws all the way
@NashRathbone
@NashRathbone 2 года назад
Hi 👍 I have a video on my channel detailing how I straighten bent jaws on my Abingdon spanners. Search 'War Finish King Dick Spanner (Number 10)' and you should find it. I must warn you, though, it is quite brutal! 😳😳😳 But it does get the job done. Please let me know if you need further help. Thanks for watching.

Very interesting vid. I have just come into possession of a No.1 and hadn't realised the history of these. I've watched your vid and am trying to date mine. the adjuster has the three grooves but doesn't have the piece inside that would retain a spring. on the front you can see N0.1, the bulldog with 'king dick' beneath it, 'trade' to the left and 'mark' to the right then near the jaw it has 'steel'. Turning it over it has 'abingdon' on the top jaw and the bulldog and king dick on the lower jaw. When you wind it out, on the back of the shaft it has 'c 18' stamped into it. The handle part has the same more curved profile as your oldest one but where the back of the jaws on yours has an overhang, mine are flush. I love it, its very tactile and just carry it about like a fidget spinner winding it in and out. Any idea of a rough date for it?

So I’ve recently picked up one of the later models (1946 6”). It’s identical to the one you say is your latest that is all pitted EXCEPT it’s the mirror of it. Place it on the bench with “King Dick” visible and the jaws point left. Didn’t think they cared much for lefties back then and also why on earth would you need a left handed spanner 😂 Any thoughts?

I have had another comment regarding a left hand King Dick Spanner and would like to find one myself. Thanks for watching 👍👍👍

How can i date my spaner?
@NashRathbone
@NashRathbone Год назад
Hi. If your spanner only has a 'British Made' stamp it may not be a genuine Abingdon King Dick tool. Dating a spanner like yours may be difficult but I may be able to take a very rough guess which may not be very accurate. Hope this helps.

I have a spanner, it is NOT marked "King Dick"....but instead has " British Made" where you would find the King Dick logo....and on the adjustable part at the top, it has a number, "351-124". The pattern is the same as your very corroded 6" King Dick. Size is ( in Metric) 15.5cm x 5.7cm jaws at the top. it is 10.3mm thick. Condition is somewhat better than your second-last spanner ( next to the corroded one in the video). The knurled knob is the same pattern as the corroded one. A rather different feature on mine, it is Opposite to yours...the jaws face the other way!.....other than that, same design! Let me know, whether you are interested in getting it ( I am in Australia! ) I do not need it, just thought it may interest you! Cheers, ALEX

The way these were stamped by owners shows just how precious they were.

Interesting video. In my tool clean up today I found what I believed is an Abingdon that's 71 mm long closed. Even though it's a bit rusty I can't find kingdick or the bulldog on it anywhere. It does have steel stamped on the lower jaw opposite to the Abingdon stamp that's a little hard to read. Leaf spring 4 row knurled turner. I might have to give it some more detailed cleaning to look at it closer. Oh and I am in Australia

Thank you so much for an interesting video. I learnt that my 6" and 4" King Dick spanners are relatively recent - not early ones as I thought. The 4" one has the word Abingdon on it but no King Dick marking.

I wonder if we live in a time where objects like tools can exist naturally the longest? In other words, since we probably use tools less now than we did in any previous time in human history, we collect them now as interesting objects rather than as tools we intend to actually use. Our grandfathers probably would only purchase what they needed and used what they had until it wore out or fell apart. 200 years ago people would use things like chisels and saws and axes and unless they cared for them and kept them oiled and protected from the elements, the tools would rust away and vanish into the environment. Tools we have today are often corrosion resistant and are probably not used nearly as often as they would have been by our fathers and grandfathers.

I have one of those KD adjustable from my Grandpa. He was in the RFC fixing aero engines in Hornchurch aerodrome. Then in Ww2 fixing lifeboat engines in the Ldn docks. He had a motor business up to 1965 and always bought the best tools etc.
