@@Larry I was confused too, so I looked up. It's the star the Lylat System is named after: starfox.fandom.com/wiki/Lylat_(star) I never got into the series (never played many famous Nintendo games in fact, as I never owned a Nintendo console), so I had no way to know that.

Sounds like the renaming of "The Madness of King George III" to "The Madness of King George" because American test audiences protested that they hadn't seen "the first two movies". Yes, I'm aware that this story is regarded as an urban legend, but I once met somebody who was on the crew for that movie and she insisted it was true. She even had the merch.

Do we know for sure it was George Lucas himself and not one of his lawyers acting without consulting him? Famously, one of Lucas's lawyers sent a threatening letter to Mad Magazine after they did a parody of The Empire Strikes Back with Alfred E. Newman dressed up as Yoda. They responded by sharing a letter that George Lucas had previously sent them saying how much he liked the parody.

Umm actually, Demon Souls was renamed to Dark Souls because Sony owned exclusivity to all Demon Souls games, and since the next game FROM SOFTWARE wanted to release was to be multi-platform to make their money back without being tied to one platform, Dark Souls was named as the spiritual successor to Demon Souls, but without the requirement of being tied to Sony's consoles only.

... EA tends to get the credit for finally stopping Langdell's trademark trolling and outright perjury, but the indie game community deserves a heaping helping. After they went after Mobigames' Edge, they compiled piles of evidence that he didn't have a leg to stand on. EA's case was based on almost entirely on this evidence, and it's likely part of the reason they challenged it instead of folding like every company before them.

To be fair, this is the guy (George Lucas) who compared selling the rights of Star Wars to Disney to "White Slavers". And complained that the Force Awakens wasn't a completely new story from scratchs with different settings and characters-essentially whining that he didn't have creative control anymore despite agreeing to sell the rights (for 5-million or so).

More ludicrous than the Soul Edge fiasco, albeit less noteworthy, was when German darkwave group BlutEngel released their somewhat recent album Omen. 20th Century, or whoever owns the film "The Omen", declared that they owned the copyright to the word "Omen", which they did not create, in all forms of media, forcing the band to re-release the album under the name "Save Us". The legal matter was not even over a work in the same medium. Save Us is a name of a song on the album, but I can't help but wonder if it was selected as a tongue in cheek plea from the band to their fans to rescue them from the film studio.

I think Nintendo might have gotten the last laugh on George Lucas in this situation. He wasn't okay with Nintendo using a title with "Star" as the first word, so they changed the title to have "Wars" as the second word.

OK so demon's souls was not changed to dark souls, dark souls was a spiritual successor because demon's souls was a ps exclusive licence and they wanted to go onto multiple formats so decided not to do a sequel, also miyazaki doesn't like doing sequels and wanted to create a new ip from day one anyway.

Similar to the "Edge" copyright crap, remember when the publishers of "Candy Crush Saga" thought they owned the word "Saga" and nothing could use that word unless they gave them all the profits? Yea...........Pepsi also did the EXACT same thing with their "Monster" energy drinks. They think they now own the word "Monster" and pretty much forced the developers of the game "Gods and Monsters" to change the name of the game to "Fenix: Immortals Rising?" Guess people think they can just copyright WORDS now.

Just a small correction: Within the lore of the Soul Blade/Soul Calibur series, there are two mystical blades opposed to one another, Soul Edge, the original name of the series, and Soul Calibur, the new name. So Namco was actually pretty clever about it!

Demon's Souls is owned by Sony. Dark Souls is owned by Namco-Bandai. From Software had to change the name when they switched publisher, since they didn't own the name "Demon's Souls" themselves. It's not really a similar situation. Oh, and 4 people (and 7 horses) died in the Hyde Park bombing. 7 died a few hours in another bombing at Regent's Park, bringing it to 11.

exactly what I wanted to post right now. I even stopped the video just for this! Sure, Dark Souls was created out of a scrapped DLC plan for Demon's Souls, but it was renamed because Bamco actually ARE NOT ALLOWED TO use Demon's Souls, as this is a Playstation exclusive Brand, but they wanted to make the next game Multi Platform, as Sony did not wanted to finance another entry (Truly their most STUPID Decision ever... altough, we now have Bloodborne, so I can make peace with that).

even better about the Tim Langdell/EA thing is that when he was trying to sue EA over Mirror's Edge, he announced a game called "MIRRORS by EDGE", and of course the word "by" was super small in the titling".
