I’m 54 and just had a knee replacement, hardest surgery I ever went thru, and I’ve had a lot! Back, breast , toes eyes, knee is the worst, especially mentally! Definitely have support!

Tips for things to get before surgery: Toilet riser seat, toilet wand for wiping yourself, shower seat, pair Skechers step-in shoes, a smock shirt with big pockets to carry crap, and KNIT capris or shorts or cut-off sweat pants. The knit capris were a necessity due to swelling. Denim capris have no.stretch and were tight on leg.

I found myself at 4-5 weeks realizing that I was improving each day and the pain was much less. At six weeks I passed all the tests that they wanted me to be able to do with flying colors. Hang in there, it may take 8 weeks or not. Just do what you can, and one day you will be walking stairs and outside with no pain!

One year after my left knee TKA, it bends 120 degrees and is somewhat straight. One month after my right knee TKA, it bends 134 degrees and is completely straight. A great physical therapist gave me an ACE bandage to bite down on and a bar to bend while he bent my right knee from 110 degrees to 120. After three days of torture and biting on the ACE brace, the pain subsides, and there's 24+ degree improvement on my fourth week.

Pay attention or keep a log, it REALLY does get a tad better every day. The disappointment in the lack of speedy recovery is real.

Thank you for the update Karen. I had my right TKA 08/29/23, and you are correct with the first week being no fun and it "sucked". Pushing myself during PT, I achieved 130 degree bend within 6 weeks. My surgeon was very happy and scheduled my left TKA 11 weeks after that. So, 11/14/23 I had the left one done. The left has been NO FUN at all, due to a previous fracture in the joint itself. I am 11 days out and still using my walker, but I am getting better every day. One thing I did notice is that you were not wearing compression hose during recovery. I have to wear them 6 weeks on the leg that was operated on and 3 weeks on the other.

I’m 73 with bone on bone on my knees. Dr wants me to do knee replacements for both knees! I’m trying to avoid the surgery as much as possible. Most times I can walk with no pain. I find my knee pain comes on whenever I eat the wrong type of food. I find when I avoid night shade vegetables, dairy, carbs, my knees feel pretty good with no pain! I don’t even feel like I have arthritis!! The cause is in the food!!

Thank you for this video. Extremely helpful. I’m having my knee replacement done on December 15, 2023. I have been having a lot of anxiety attacks about it. Especially because everybody’s telling me how much pain is involved afterwards. And then I’ve heard from many people that says the pain never really goes away. I’m a big swimmer and I’m hoping to get back in the pool after my recovery and swim even better. But no one talks about that. Again, thank you. I’m gonna watch this video a few times. Hopefully it will reduce my anxiety attacks. Thank you for the flexinator. hopefully I spelled that right. I wonder if Amazon sells one?

Thank you for your video. I will be going down your road in the near future. I'm 3 months shy of 56y/o. I will be needing a TNR for my left knee which is bone on bone like yours on the medial side. The right knee is almost bone on bone. I worked in a 200,000sqft fast paced, electrical parts warehouse (Graybar) for 25.5 years starting at age 26. On my feet your entire shift except breaks, lunch, and if on forklift. Did frequent lifting up to about 40lb and occasional lifting up to 90-100lb(copper wire orders from Encore). Lot's of lifting while twisting, bending over, walking, standing, etc. I worked in our inbound freight department. So basically the pallets were unloaded and then broke down onto carts by part numbers to be checked in and then stored on the shelf. We had 42isles with storage racks going up to about 40ft. Put away and selection was done by stock pickers we drove on a drive by wire system in our floor. Iv'e been dealing with my left knee since about 2002 after I totaled out my 93DodgeD250 while driving to work. I T-boned a guy who ran a stop sign and stopped in the middle of feeder road 60mph traffic. I had know where to go but lock it up, brace for a few seconds and...Bamm!! My left shin flew up and hit under the dash and left a deep yellowish bruise on it. I bent the steering wheel and found out I had jammed my right shoulder. Did PT for a weeks. I had returned to work five days after the accident but took it easy because everything was still sore. About two weeks in to work my left knee starting aching/stinging at the end of my shift. Every day after it would start up sooner. Swelled up just a little bit. Iv'e taken Celebrex, Arthrotec75, Naproxen, Aleve, etc. Iv'e now had the same orthopedic specialist since this started. I've had two ortho surgeries, two draining's from it swelling up like a balloon, three injections to date. I tore my right medial meniscus in 2018 noticing it while at work of course. Had that surgery. So now it's pain in both knees. My Doctor had told me that do to my age at that time that I needed to try to put my replacement off for as long as I could because the new joints generally are good for about 15-20years. He also said that once I did my replacement that I would not be able to return back to the type job I was doing. To compound that in 2014 I picked a couple of light post up in a freight delivery truck, wound up hurting my back and being out two weeks. It healed enough for me to go back to work but always reminded me something was still there going on. In Feb. of 2021, I finally did a MRI there when it grew worse and I have all sorts of joint issues between L3 and S1. So....Oct 2021 at 53.5 I was forced to step away from my job. Iv'e had bi-lateral injections in my back which only lasted a few days of 50% relief and next moth I'm finally going in for facet rhizotomy. This different orthopedic Dr. Told me we will probably do the nerve ablation from L3 down to S1. Enjoy yall's road tripping. It looks like fun although me and a motorcycle will never mix..lol

Like the woman who posted this video I am working on improving my range of motion. In a way walking is easier because I no longer have the grinding of bone on bone. Stretching tight muscles and tendons isn't fun but I am making progress. Manly I am impatient, my progress is by inches not by the feet I want. So far Tylenol has handled the pain.

On my ice machine we used Gatorade bottles. Kept 12 of them so they would be frozen enough when we was ready for it in the rotation, filled them with water and froze them. The ice machine would hold 4 of them at a time and it totally saved a lot on the ice bill being we didn't have an ice maker...

I just finished watching all your ‘New Knee’ videos .. thank you for sharing the good, the bad and the ugly! I’m a few days away from getting my new knee and watching your videos and others have been a huge help! I actually gasped out loud when you shared your mishap on those stairs! I do have one question: did you come home in that small smart car? I ask, because I’m worried about getting into my SUV … but if you got into that small car with a brand new incision, then I’ll be okay! Happy to see you’re loving your new knee!

Enjoyed your video thanks so pleased all went well for you after TKR sounds like all your hard efforts payed off. Wanted to tell you that you're a lovely helpful human being great help sharing experiences in your recovery knowing what you have been through plus reminding we're all different so not to expect same recovery progress have to be patient keep doing exercises & not to give up. I had L/TKR 6 weeks ago so hopefully over worst in regards to pain but vicious cycle walking exercising causes more swelling stiffness so can't overdo have to pace. Hopeful will get lots better made best decision to improve quality of life. Need to improve ROM so now starting Hydrotherapy 🤞

Absolutely not, I have the hope in the end that no matter what pain I need to go through to make it better can’t be any worse then it felt before surgery. So yes I would do it again and will on my left knee. The difference is I won’t wait as long to get surgery but I am going to wait till my right knee is fully healed if I can before having the left knee done. 😊

I had a total knee replacement on 12/7/2001. I was 46, had played sports my entire life (until I could not walk) and my right knee was trash. My surgeon did not want to do the operation because of my age. I begged. It changed my life completely. My doc had told me that the life of the replacement would be around ten years/one million steps. I am going strong for 22 years, unknown numbers of steps and boulders and trees carried and moved around (I own a landscape business). I have finally, this past year, begun to feel some little indicators that it is on a downward trajectory. I could not be more thrilled about having had the procedure. It gave me a life that went from aspirin and ice packs, to gentle hiking and pickleball. I was fortunate and had fantastic (but brutally painful, not gonna kid you) physical therapy twice a week for 12 weeks. The usual gym work, biking and stretching and stepping, was part of it, but the real difference came at the end of the gym circuit when the main therapist put me on a padded bench while he forced my knee to bend as far as possible (which included screaming and crying in a room of about 20 other people who each got their turn to scream and cry). Then he would do it again, only this time his assistant would measure the angle. Then he would repeat that procedure while bending the knee out as flat as possible. Repeat and measure. More screams, etc. The physical therapy was the biggest reason why I had such a great result. I have met people who literally had to have a second operation to cut scar tissue because they had not had such exacting therapy and could not bring themselves to do the painful stuff effectively. If I have one "tip" it would have to be, get the meanest SOB drill sergeant physical therapist and tell them to force your knee to bend and straighten such that you end up with good range of motion.

I am 76 years old, 7 years ago I had my first knee replaced and a year later the second knee. I have always done sports and hiking so it was important for me to be mobile. I had been playing pickleball for 6 years before the first replacement. You must get yourself fit before the surgery, including your weight. Afterwards you must work on getting the muscles supporting the artificial knee. A stationary bike is the best! Absolutely. Take meds to control the pain. Exercise is mandatory. Use a cane but walk! A year after 2 replaced knees I was hiking, biking, and in a year and a half playing pickleball and am still hiking and playing pickleball. You can do it!

Hi Karen. From Canada here. Great videos. Had my right TKR done 2nd Nov 2023. Just over five weeks now. I am 66, male, in Vancouver. Can walk without any aid for short distances. You are right about how everyone’s recovery and healing and pain tolerance level is different. Thank you for taking the time and effort to publish these videos. Very entertaining and informative too. You have helped many like me and encouraged us during this darn painful journey. Five weeks now, and you’re right about that tight band around the knee. If I walk long distance unaided I get exhausted but recover soon as I’ve rested. Morning stiffness is there but goes away once you stretch a little. I can walk but slightly painful. Pain is reducing day by day. Small advice to all. Please make sure to have a lot of help and support during recovery as it’ll be much quicker and less stressful. Like you said, recovery after TKR is a full time job. Managing pain by keeping it at bay and having pain medications on time, pain or no pain. Don’t overdo the physio but don’t underestimate the power of regular physio. Thanks again Karen for the videos. I follow regularly and gives me the strength and encouragement to recover at my pace

Thank you so much! I got my new knee 3 1/2 months ago, and I'm almost back to normal. I was in good shape for this surgery because I got a new hip on the other side almost exactly a year ago. The hip had crippled me. I could barely walk, just as I was forced to move from my home of 17 years. With no one to help it was a nightmare. However; the surgery went very well. I surprised the whole medical team. I am 71, and I hadn't ridden a bicycle in almost a decade. Last summer I rode all over town, and even did a 100 mile roundtrip on the Ohio/Erie Bike trail, and I'm not talking about an e-bike! The knee let me know that the time had come, so in late summer I had the knee done. I have scary powers of healing and recuperation, and the doctor still can't believe how far I have come. I still get the shots in my other knee, and I think I'll have it replaced next fall. I have a great doctor and support team, and I might as well take advantage of this window of opportunity. This year I'm going bikepacking from Columbus, Ohio to Cincinatti, and next year Columbus to Cleveland. I called 2023 my year of rebirth, and I'm enjoying the hell out of my second childhood. Thank you for the tips and wisdom. All the best to you and yours. Happy New Year!

Your video is exactly me. I am 12 days post op. Taking oxy every 4-6 hrs. I feel only little pain improvement with hus tylenol. Constant icing and walking are my friend. I am shy to go from walker to Cane for fear of falling I feel almost embarrassed calling for oxy refill. I understand opiod crisis but yhey are all that allow me to do activities of daily living. How long do most people need narcotic pain relief? I have very little help, mostly my choice. I will follow your progress as your story is so similar to mine. Good luck to us newbies who find this recovery long , slow and painful
@katsujinkin60
@katsujinkin60 8 месяцев назад
Do not, I repeat DO NOT feel embarrassed to ask for your pain meds. This is what they are for! Anything can be abused, but this is actually what these meds were created for. Most post op patients take narcotic pain relief for 6 weeks after surgery. It is a long slow process, but it is SO worth it! I will be celebrating my one year anniversary for the hip in a few days. It isn't even an issue any more. It is the 4 month mark for the knee, and I am walking normally without pain, and riding my bike all over town. I am still working on bending my knee back. I have a few degrees of flex yet to go. Its still stiff in the morning, and there is sometimes a general ache, but nothing that Tylenol can't control. You are going through the worst of it, but it WILL get steadily better. I also don't have any help, but I have handled both surgeries pretty well. I'm even planning on having the other knee done next fall. Keep that pain under control, don't wait until it gets bad. Do your exercises, especially the bending and flexing. You are well on your way. You'll be glad you did it. All the best to you, my friend. Be well and prosper! @@POKE53

Thank you for sharing your experience. This is actually a very common surgery and insights about your experience is actually very helpful to a great many people. Because doctors don’t really fully explain this as well as they should. All to often they are quick to talk and put the door in less than 5 minutes. Case in point back in like 2011 I was supposed to have an ablation done. But the meeting with the heart surgeon (radio heart specialist). But I felt apprehensive at the time and I just felt the doctor I meet with didn’t give me the warm fuzzy because I got the impression he was in far too much a rush. He seemed to be too much of a hurry to go jump in his Porsche and go play golf than meet me and assure me. I’m sure that wasn’t the case but I just felt rushed to do the procedure. I did finally get the Ablation done (to fix my WPW). It was 7 years ago now. But this different radio cardiologist took things slow explaining everything and was way more personable. And I was far more comfortable. But it did take having several severe episodes of afib to get there. Anyway enough about my experience. But thanks for sharing yours.

So ive been working very hard at losing weight by cutting out sugar and carbs. Im still limping all the time. The pain in my knee feels like it'll never go away. Great video, wish I would have seen it 22 years ago. I had a severe accident at work and after a year of treatment they concluded that my knee was bone on bone like yourself. So my knee is 22 years post op now. At the time I was 52 yrs. Old. I returned to work after four months. I found the surgery to be like going to hell and back. Severe pain and I mean severe pain. My doctor didn't believe in pain meds so I managed with motrin. I had a motion machine in bed for five weeks. My doctor said at that time my knee would probably last seven years. Well here we are 22 years later and it's completely worn out and needs a revision surgery which is like starting completely over. Now my right leg also needs a replacement as well as both my hips. New surgeon said I had to lose weight to start surgeries. I lost 68 pounds which made him happy. He then told me because of my severe pain in knees and hips and not walking I had lost body mass. NOW I am in rehab trying to recover my muscle mass before he will operate. May I state I am in agony ..but still not giving up. I am 74 years old and had been a caregiver for my disabled husband who passed away 17 years ago. Then my mother on hospice in my home and years later my father came to live with me until he also passed away. You ask? Would you do it again? Yes, with alot more information and locating the correct doctor. The revision will be a very difficult surgery taking twice as long in the operating room. I will go to in house rehab because though my husband was totally bedridden he was still in the house. This time I will be all alone. Wish me well. .. when I finally get there I'll need all the prayers I can muster. God Bless you! Sincerely, Debbie 🙋🧑‍🦽 and Dexter-Dog 🐕🐾 my sweet tiny rescued Chihuahua 🐕 companion living 🏠🌴 a quiet crafty life in southern California. 💕🙋🧑‍🦽🐾🐕🏠🌴🌅🌄😎🙏🙏

Great vid, thank you. Just into ww6 on having both knees done here in Dublin, Ireland. I'm very lucky, after the first 3 weeks the pain (mostly) has gone away. I walk about 4,000 steps and I bend my knees without too much trouble. I know, from looking at many vids that I am a lucky one. I am 70 yrs old. I cycled almost every day for years before my knees op and went to the gym as well. That definitely helped me. I was quite fit. I'm back in the gym later this week (first week Dec '23). Anyhow, love and best wishes from Dublin, Ireland.

Thank you very much for your video. I don’t feel so alone now in my experience. I am a 68 year old woman from the west of Toronto area. My TKR was done just over a year ago and I still experience stiffness like you. I am able to go for long walks and ride my bike and go swimming without problems and I can even sit cross legged for a few minutes. However, the swelling never completely went away, no matter how much I iced it and elevated it. Your comment about being prescribed some prednisone was interesting and I may ask my specialist about that. I found the post operative two weeks difficult and learned that it is well worthwhile to do intense physical therapy for 3 to 4 months followed by regular exercises at the gym a few times per week. I was able to do a little therapy in a pool with an underwater treadmill which greatly helped. I was advised to elevate my leg as much as possible which I found quite uncomfortable as it started to bother my hip. My belief was that it had something to do with my gait, but I have since found out I do have some problems with the hip itself and may require surgery at some point. It is quite a difficult journey, and I feel for people who have to get the other knee done after going through the first surgery. I’m grateful that my left knee is still holding up. It is helpful for people to keep in mind that everyone is different in their healing process which you correctly pointed out. My friends husband had such a successful knee replacement that sometimes he can’t even remember which knee was replaced! Unfortunately, I am very far away from that reality, but hope to get there somehow. My goal is to be able to downhill skiing again. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your story Paula. I hope that people will read the comments to see how everyone is different and how PT is very important. My left knee is hanging in there right now too. But funny you mention the hip, because I have recently been having some periodic pain too. I went to the chiropractor and was better after that, but now it comes and goes. I agree...ask your doc about the prednisone. Hope you get to ski one day. I used to race in a club decades ago. Now, I'm into RVing and boating...much calmer activity and warmer. :)
