In this video, we kick off a series that will explain the framework of the system that I think is most effective in correcting posture. Together we will reason out what we need to actually change how we use ourselves. By the end of the series, you should understand what you can do to meaningfully take control over your posture. You will also understand why a reasoned system is effective while other systems are not.
I offer lessons in the Initial Alexander Technique, which are conducted one-on-one with a teacher over Zoom. They are designed to help you gain conscious control over how you move your body. Most people have no idea what they’re doing with their body, and as they misuse their body, they end up with discomfort, pain, and other issues that they may not even realize are caused by what they’re doing to themselves. But how do you figure out what you’re doing wrong? And how do you change what you're doing and overcome lifelong habits?
In an Initial Alexander Technique lesson, you will record yourself through Zoom, so you will be able to see and understand what you are doing when you stand, sit, walk, and perform other simple gestures. With the assistance of your teacher, you will come to understand how you are misusing the mechanisms of your body, and you will gain the ability to choose to use yourself in a more sensible way. You can learn how to use your body without pain. You can break free from long held habits. All you need is a system that works.

"In the performance of any muscular action by conscious guidance and control there are four essential stages:
(i) The conception of the movement required;
(2) The inhibition of erroneous preconceived ideas which subconsciously suggest the manner in which the movement or series of movements should be performed;
(3) The new and conscious mental orders which will set in motion the muscular mechanism essential to the correct performance of the action;
(4) The movements (contractions and expansions) of the muscles which carry out the mental orders."

I love your videos but there is one thing that’s been bugging me that I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on. At the 3min mark you have two images of your self, a before and after. I’ve noticed you quite frequently use the “after” pic as a reference to better posture. This maybe an old image but to my eye the internal part of the upper arm is very forward and you seem to be turning the hand to bring about this change which make the arms look alittle unnatural and stiff. And also seem to be coming forward from a point little below the armpit line. Which gives it a bit of a Alexander zombie apocalypse feel. You have so much great content on here but I feel this image could be better represented. Any thoughts??

I stumbled on one of his videos, and those pictures confused me. On the one hand, he is talking a lot of sense and sounds very readable, but his examination does not look quite right. maybe our eye is not used to seeing a REAL good posture.

I've said many times that my posture is not perfect. Sometimes I'm pulling images from older videos, and it's easy to see that the further back you go, the more problems you can see in my posture. That's part of the beauty of having a clear model, you can see precisely where there's room for improvement, and over time you can see that improvement. It's worth noting that standing with your arms fully extended down is about as difficult a standing pose as you can do, outside of maybe extending your arm to the point of pointing your hand back. It would be much easier to pose with my arms in a less extended position, but that's part of why I like using this pose. It reveals your shortcomings. That's part of why, when you look at more standard portrayals of good posture that use this pose, you see such massive bends in both the torso and the arms (beyond what you would see if they had their arms crossed for instance). This is an unforgiving pose, and anywhere you are lacking even a little ability to extend will show up. But perhaps I should make some images in an easier pose so that some of the details of the torso are better portrayed. Try taking a picture of yourself, arms extended straight down, and analyze it. If it's as good or better than mine, do share it. I'd love to have more pictures of people to use, and hopefully will have some soon, but understandably many people do not like to have their images used in videos on the internet.

I know your aspect on tongue posture when it comes to the OAT, but whats your take on when it comes to 'keeping your teeth and lips together' in the Orthotropic premise? It doesn't really give me the lengthenening kind of outlook to it, but it does seem to have helped me build up muscle in the jaw area giving a more pleasing look with the teeth together, and I am guessing the 'smile beyond the eyes' would be the same as sealing the lips.

I would like to ask you how you feel about mewing. The fact that the tongue should be in the upper palate, and this is how they say its natural position. And can you make a separate video about mewing ( I apologize if it is written crookedly, I wrote through a translator)
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147 Месяц назад
I agree with the Mews’ critiques of orthodontics, but I’m not a fan of mewing. I think the tongue should be wide and flat in the mouth. The tongue goes to the roof of the mouth for swallowing, which will tend to close the airway, so I would not want to be consistently opening the esophagus and partially closing the airway. I will be releasing an in-depth critical analysis on mewing this summer.

The main thesis of this system (as I understand it it) is that fascia along the spine should be taut. Which is an intresting concept and I'm experimeting with it. This taut fascia along the spine is it something we observe when looking at other mammals?
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147 Месяц назад
Thanks for your response! The next video (now out) shows you're largely right, but there's a little more to it. Fascia goes from head to toe, but there are major sections of it that are highly relevant. The thoracolumbar fascia, that you mention, is attached to a number of muscles on the back, and so it’s hugely important to start off, but shortening or narrowing of fascia anywhere is an issue. I don’t know a ton about animals, but I do believe that mammals, birds, reptiles and fish all have fascia that functions similarly to human fascia.

When coordinating with the 3 second concerted movement rule, when we end the movement coordinations at the third second, should it still feel like we are still doing the movement even though we end the movement if you know what i mean? Such as moving the arms in a downward direction, are we subconsciously still pulling the arms down even if we consciously end the movement at the end of the duration? When i do model myself in the miror, I feel like feeling my way into due tension puts me in a better state, where as ending the movements at the end of the three second concerted movements cause my body to be limp at the end. I was wondering if you could help? Thanks
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147 Месяц назад
You want to let go of some of the effort it took to make the movement, especially at first. However, you do not want to just let go of the direction and go limp. Say for instance you’ve made an adjustment to move your ribcage up. After the three, can you prevent the ribcage from dropping back down even while no longer applying the movement? It will feel strange, but you very well may find you can.
@Matty-H
@Matty-H Месяц назад
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147 Thanks, I've noticed usually with my ribcage I can keep it in position without carrying on the movement, by feeling limp, are we implying it feels loose and not tense? One of the bone joints i do struggle to keep in its direction is the downward direction of the arms, I feel like the direction goes once after the 3 seconds. Can it have counterproductive results if i do try to consciously move the arms in a downward direction without stopping at the 3 second mark?

Is sleeping on my back going to push my maxilla downward and into the skull?
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147 Месяц назад
I would be more concerned with what you’re doing while awake, but sleeping on your back can strengthen habits of pulling the head back, which will go along with the maxilla coming back and down. You can try putting blankets or pillows under your upper torso, but what matters most is what you’re doing while you’re awake, as that is where you can consciously control your movements. When you go to sleep, you’re going to fall into your habits, so the better you’re doing while awake, the better off you will be when you go to sleep.

I have watched your playlist till the end of your playlist on sitting and I want to ask you about sleeping poition, meditation postion, driving postion, sitting on the toilet position. You might read this and think Im laughing but Im quite series about it.
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147
@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147 Месяц назад
As this series continues, hopefully it will make clear some general rules that can really be applied to any gesture or posture. Driving is a bit tricky, but you can still maintain the length of your torso and avoid twisting. Using the toilet is another one that is difficult. Toilets are not set up well in my opinion. It would be optimal to squat as they do in some countries, but that’s not really feasible for those of us who only have toilets. Another thing to consider is that being a situation where your posture is a bit compromised for a period of time is not the end of the world. 1. You can still typically maintain lengthening of the torso at least. 2. What really matters is being able to get back to lengthening once you’re out of the cramped position. Many people have no idea how to lengthen, so they never do, not even when they’re in a situation with no external restriction. That issue of people never lengthening is really what leads to more serious postural problems. As long as you have the means by which to lengthen once you're off the toilet, you'll be okay.
