Thanks for putting this up. Your video helped walk me through the project. I used a loaner tool set from Advance Auto. On reinstallation of the fan unit I found that using a wood working clamp on the upper shroud compressed it allowing a bit easier access to the shaft nut. Be very careful not to crossthread the fan nut as you reinstall. I used a Dorman replacement and found the last inch of the wiring harness was exposed. I covered the bare wire insulation with electrical tape to protect it from exposure and chafe.
I have changed mine out once and it’s not hard but it’s not easy either - took me half an afternoon! After 2.5 yrs now - My truck is again getting hot 200 degrees engine temp (in 100 degree Houston weather) at idol in drive thru line at McDonald’s and ac in not even cool. I’m thinking about supporting my local mechanic to change it as I have better things to do! 😆 Great video!
Thanks for taking the time to do this. I ended up buying the fan clutch tool from Amazon (~$50.00) and an air hammer for the task. I'd rather have the tools for any future use plus it's still less expensive than paying someone to do the job. I came to your video to double-check on the direction to turn the nut and a review of the task. Mine is an 03 3500 SRW Quad and it took some time to work through the stubborn nut. Ended up using a long pry bar wedged against the belt pulley nuts to keep it from rotating and that did the trick after some start/stop attempts with the air hammer. For the fan assembly removal, I worked from underneath the truck. Before unscrewing/removing the assembly, I put a piece of cardboard between the radiator and fan to minimize any radiator fin damage. Once the fan assembly was screwed off and with some patience it was easy to snake/rotate her down and then back up with the new clutch installed. Just remember to pull out the sheet of cardboard before connecting the wire connector and installing the bottom shield. It was an easy task once the nut was broken loose .
I’ve got the same AC issue on idle. Live in Vegas and we are peaking at 115 degrees these days. The truck will stay right around 180 on idle since the engine isn’t under load but will keep climbing as long as it’s under load. The part where I’m confused about is even at highway speeds I’ll climb sometimes even past 210 degrees. I have an oem 180 degree Cummins thermostat. I think I’ll try the fan clutch and see if that changes anything
Thanks , i just bought my 2006 cummins and had no idea what was wrong with it , i had my suspicions about the clutch or the thermostat, but this is exactly what my truck is doing so now im going to change out my clutch thanks and keep up the videos… thanks
Thanks man, I wish I would of watched this b4 I paid some jack wagon 680.00 to fix my AC. I did have a thought about the fan but figured he would catch what ever it was . Funny thing is they took my hole dash out chasing the problem.
I have a 2004 2500 with the cummins 5.9. I had to change my clutch fan. I watched you video for the instructions [Thank You]. After looking at the bottom side of the fan shroud I noticed that I have a 2 piece shroud. After removing the 2 plastic rivet things, the bottom half goes up about 1/2 an inch then comes back down to remove. I removed the clutch just as you said but took it out the bottom. About a 30 minute job. MFG date on my Dodge is Sept 03
Just learned mine is bad after charging the a/c and has been since day one of owning it. Previous owner put in a new radiator because it didn't blow cold . Mines stuck real bad & just not knowing if reverse thread or standard since mine is an early 03 with suttle differences in wiring . Another person showed a vid explaining direction of blade angle determines thread direction
I got a question you might be able to answer. On my 2008 2500 cummins, i have the same setup there, and the fan seems to move with a reasonable amount of resistance, and it moves plenty of air at idle. My issue is that sometimes the fan just seems to be locked in for the whole duration of the drive. Checking the temp gauge, and it reads just under 200 degrees. When rpm goes up, the fan is just noisy as can be, and same with idling down. Would this be an issue with the fan clutch, or would it be an issue of the ecu telling it to kick on? Mind you, i dont use the A/C.
If it is time for a radiator flush, it is so much easier just to take the AC condenser out of the way (gently), take the inner cooler out of the way pull the radiator, but good video nonetheless.!
Problem I'm having is that my belt broke now it's like overheating but it takes about what was sitting there when it's idling it stays normal the temperature stays normal but when I'm driving about 20 25 minutes later it's all the way up to the hot mark can you give me any pointers of what you think that might be I'm thinking it's the clan I mean I'm sorry I'm thinking that as the fan clutch fan or cuz nothing's leaking in the water pump I got a new thermostat I put new hoses on there's a new air conditioner unit in it everything everything's new except for the water pump but the water pump is not making a noise or it's not making it's not leaking can you give me any pointers to give me any suggestions of what should I check next thank you very much cuz you make everything look so easy
Probably your water pump. Pulley bearing wears out, gets squeaky. If you ignore it, it'll shred your serpentine belt which can damage other components when it comes off...like fan blades or fan clutch wiring harness. I speak from experience. Try spraying the water pump pulley with water (while running) and see if squeal goes away temporarily.
I got to do my 06 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel 5 speed tomorrow. I rat build a nest in radiator shoud a stick was in there and got caught in the fan. The cable to fan clutch got destroyed with fan blades. The fans blades broke off and destroyed my radiator. I was driving a real steep incline in 4 low when this happened. Luck I drove a short distance to the house to access the damage. What a costly repair. Radiator, fan clutch, fan and antifreeze.
Having troubles with getting stuck in 2nd and 3rd gear, pulled this code and read that replacing it would help the shifting as well. Any truth to that? I know the wire from the fan clutch is on the same line as the tranny.
@@hogie1685 no I do not have one. the kit from o'reillys was cheap and the wrench ended up bending lol. My old neighbor is a mechanic and is going to come over to try with his kit. funny thing is, I replaced the clutch a year or two ago but cannot remember the direction to turn it
In the seven years you’ve owned your truck have you had to change the water pump yet now would be a good time to do that too if you haven’t change the water pump we do a video of it when you do it
They sell a reversed style fan clutch and a non reverse style fan clutch for the 07 6.7 Cummins and I’m trying to get a new one but I can’t figure out witch one I have I was wondering if u knew how to tell witch one I need
This doesn't make sense to me. Unless your truck was at operating temp to lock the "clutch" , of course it's going to spin with out pressure. That's the point of a clutch fan. My fan is locked on cold start up, It takes 20 damn minutes for the temp gauge to even start moving in the winter.
Change water pump out to they usually start leaking around 175,000 and take air hose blow out radiator it will be dirty after all that time not moving any air and dont by after market clutch fans from o'Reillys unless u want to do this every weekend
Yah my wires where all good and secure. Not sure how or what made it do that lol. Make sure you keep the old clutch. Lol. I still had mine lol. Put it back in for now
@@hogie1685 - All's good, after some digging, was able to find a video that showed how the wrenches worked. If anyone's interested, here's the video... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iAsE7tHE9Uc.html
Glad you cleaned the fan! ;) Did this solve the codes? What was your total time on this job? Hey, we haven't forgotten about your giveaway promise for 100K subs! Get on 'er! ;)
Don’t buy anything but a genuine Mopar fan clutch. Did some engine work, went ahead and changed the fan clutch with an off brand from Rock Auto. Don’t! Just lost the warranted clutch. Going back stock!
Yeah…think got mine from the innerwebs and it was like 450. Rock auto was like 179 but when it quits going through the Rockies, I wished I’d have gone back stock. Funny thing is, the factory one was fine I just swapped out a bunch of the auxiliary stuff sense its 20 years old and I had the engine apart. Probably threw away a good fan clutch for nothing!
Oh No. Great video, but you only drive 20 minutes to work! And you live in the south of Ontario ,do you really need AC baby in March .Got too get me a Dodge. Ha
