I think this is why I have so many hits on the video is because of the clip removal for that handle

Thank you thank you to Terry for posting! Was a huge help. Just finished this ever expanding project and in the spirit of sharing info would like to offer the following: 1. Larrys post does sound like pure genius and I wish I'd just spliced in a new base. But if you're going to do the full replacement note that when removing the pillar piece that gold colored clip actually pulls away from the body. Looks like Terry pulled the plastic trim out of the clip, which risks breaking the plastic. Get your trim tool or whatever around that gold clip and pry against protected frame and that "little gadget" will pop out. 2. I was working on 2003 Tahoe, and was unable to get the rubber grommet to seat. I pulled and pushed until the grommet slipped on the wire and I had to start over. So for me I ended up removing the fender, which sounds daunting, but by following the Chiltons manual I removed and re-installed in less than 3 hours. I wasted an hour and scraped up my arm trying to seat that thing and wish I would have just pulled the fender from the start. In the end, the new base and antenna provided perfect reception (including AM which is not a separate antenna as some have suggested). I too had to remove the dash top... When I tried just pulling the wire at base of the pillar it would not come out. I tried for a long time and again in the end wish I'd just gone straight to removing the dash top. With the help of this video removing the top was actually pretty simple. Overall took me three evenings. Good luck all.

I am soo glad I watched this video. I made me realize that there was a much simpler way to do this. We less to do than what Terry did. But watching Terry is what made me realize this. On the inside of the cab on the passenger side just take off the plastic covering the door post that sits right above the dash. This exposes the antenna connection from the outside part and is all is needed from the inside. I disconnected it from there and taped string to it like Terry did. Removed the black plastic cap on outside where antenna bolts in. Removed the 3 (7mm) bolts there. Took screw driver and popped off rubber grommet. Pulled out the old one (it pulled the string through) and then taped the string to the new one. I pulled it back through the firewall and up to the top of the dash where it was before. Then hooked it back to its connection there and put back the plastic post cover and blck cover on outside part and snapped grommet back in place. Only tricky part is making sure you tape the string tight but cant use a lot of tape, otherwise it wont fit through the firewall. All in all, I did this by myself in about 45 minutes. Thank you Again for your video Terry, you saved me countless hours.. and from tearing my dash apart...

Did you get the grommet in place ? The area to work and vision is DIFFICULT.

No need to go through all of this. Just pull the finder mount off and pull the antenna cable from it. Go to the junk yard and do the same or order a new antenna from Amazon. You only need the new or used mounting part of the antenna assembly now slide your original antenna cable into the new or used antenna mount. Push the cable in farm and remount it and your antenna now your all good. Yes, it works because i just did my 06 tahoe with a broken antenna and saw this site and was like there's gotta be an easier way. I found another video after watching this one that shows you how to do this.

I did this method and was done within an hour. Just be careful when pulling the pillar trim cover; I broke the clip...

At the end of the video your car wasn't even put back together . Just cut the wire and splice it and you can be done in 10 min . Without tearing your car apart .

I have tried unsuccessfully to drill and tap the existing base. I have zero experience at tapping so I may not be doing it right. The tap won't seem to get a bite of the base. I may have someone else look at it. My antenna broke off in the car wash, leaving part of the threaded shaft in the base. Tried a screw extractor with no success.

Yea I tried drill it , they have a piece with an Allen screw in it to kinda wick fix this , it looked like it wouldn’t be good so I opt out on going that route ! Still pondering .

Go to the 2 1/2 minute video and watch the shortcut I did it it took me 10 minutes . I did that after I messed around for a half hour pulling the dashboard apart and couldn't figure out what I had to do to get to it . Fix me at tennis at 10 minute job at best . Again it's a two minute and nine seconds video of the watch

Ok, just followed this to the letter with mixed success. Thank you for taking the time and effort! I didn't waste time looking for the right sizes of tools or anything. What I did different: The aftermarket coax cable was a pain in the but to feed through the hole, so basically, I cut the connector off and re-spliced it once fed through. It was a few hours of wasted time before we decided to make this move. Took 10 minutes after the decision was made. Works perfect.

This video was a big help in helping me replace my heater core. I was stumped at how to get the grab handle out. I had it out in about a minute after you explained how to release it. Thanks.

Oh Good Gravy! (I'm thinking iPod at this point..). I have a snapped-off antenna on my 2004 2500HD. Thanks for your video!! Two possible alternatives: 1. Drill and tap the stub where the antenna broke at the 3-hole base, and use the threaded connectors that came with the after-market antenna from O'Rielly for $14.00. (my local Chev dealer wants $82.00). 2. Run a new coax cable from the radio to ANYWHERE else than through the firewall, and install a completely new antenna/base ($22.00).

just replaced this part on my sisters 04 Suburban, Drop the glove box and look up in there behind the xm radio box and you will see the cable connection over top of what looks like an air filter foam piece (at least thats where hers was, not up on the a-pillar), disconnect there, hook some wire or something around it so when you pull it out you will have something to attach to the new wire to fish it in with and YANK, took about an hour once we worked out the method, could probably do it in 15 minutes now that we have done it.

I really don't think that removing the entire dash is necessary. I will try to cut the end of the antenna (That connects to the radio) and tape another wire to it, then while I pull the old antenna out I'll have to make sure that I will be able to use the wire that was connected to the old antenna to connect the new one and pull it through. I will be replacing an antenna on a 2003 GMC Sierra this weekend so I'll will try to return and give you my consensus.

Thanks for the vid,,,but you do not have to remove the dash to change the antenna base,,just remove the right inside winsheild pillar trim cover,,the junction for the antena base wire is right there at the bottom,,,you can seperate it there and then drop the glove box and reach up to pull the wires down to a better area to work with them,,,,then you can attach a thin wire to the end of the cable, and pull it through to the outside with the old antenna wire,,,thanks again,,

to get to the firewall part, you take out the inner fender liner and you can get to it super easy, just turn the tire to the right..

Don’t tear it all apart. The wire that has the grommet will unplug from the base! The three screws is all you need to remove from the mast base. 2 minutes max!

You can buy a hidden antenna on eBay for $20 shipped. It gets rid of that big ass antenna for a cleaner look. Or and this will piss you off. The base pops off of the old cable. Buy a new one and pop off the base on the new cable and put the new base on the on the old cable. Have done this a few times for people. No problems

Thanks for the video. You had a few extra steps that I was able to skip, like pulling out the radio and opening the glovebox to undo those screws. I had to move the brace in the engine compartment to get to where the wire fed through the firewall. All in all, I think it took me about 1 to 1.5 hours.

i did no 2 with a cheap shitty antenna cable and it must be shitty quality or something because it gets horrible reception.

Thanks for this video. When it comes to these plastic parts knowing how things come apart is key. I had to take apart my dash since, I was missing the post and wire.

just get a antenna cable extension and re-route it from antenna to stereo without having to take dash apart. I do these all the time professional. no reason to try to get old cable out, just leave it, and run a new one. 20-30 min. total install time.

+Raul Romo Thanks for the comment. Where do you route the cable to get it through the firewall? Where does is the connection between the base and the head unit? Can you give more details?
@raiderman28

I usually will make a hole if one is not accessible, and route the cable along carpet then up to the stereo and plug it in

I have done that before. just last week, the body shop next door brought a chevy trailblazer, and supposedly they got it at the dealer with the car vin number. the tip on the antenna was completely off something newer, or someone had already replaced some of the cabling to the stereo. well, long store short, I cut the tip off and solder the old tip to the new antenna with solder. you just isolate the inside wires and solder them, and also outside wire and solder, tape that up. you can use heat shrink tubing. this was a quick repair that the body shop was paying for not the customer. they wanted it done cheap and fast. it was a solid repair, reception was great.

There is a much easier way of replacing the antenna base. Mine was broken off at the car wash and I watched them fix it. Pure genius. They took the new replacement mount (The cable is coaxial) the snipped off the ends and replaced them with ends like you attach; to your television. They screwed each side to a female adapter and put heat wrap shrink over the connections. They were done in 10 minutes and no pulling apart my Dash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
