The outdoor axe is a multi use combo axe / knife for finer work and splitting, best used in combination with a silky saw. The hatchet is better for mainly chopping timber work as it is heavier and a saw isnt necessarily needed. Swings and roundabouts depending on how you like to load out.
Baton the wood with the hatchet is so wise. It is way better than taking several wacks to get nothing where with the baton your into the round right away. Very smart Mr. Welsh Woodsman.
Those are both nice. I really like your detailed explanations of the two axes. I like the skinny handle one for in camp around the kitchen and butchering deer, pototoes, parsnips, and chopping in camp and I even use mine at home. I carrey the skinny handle one in my pickup truck, as well. I use my Wildlife handle for in the campfire wood chopping and cutting and processing woods for burning and I carry that one on my hip to when in the woods and when hunting in my pack or sometimes on my hip. I agree with you the Wildlife fits way better in the hand for processing wood, where the Outdoor is more of a detailed tool and I like it for PERSONAL DEFENSE as well. Enjoyed your video. I also own several Gransfor Bruks hatchets and axes. They’re quality built with great steel. You should try Tuatahi axes. They’re also wonderful quality. I recommend the trapper and work axe. I’d give the Tuatahi the edge in chopping ability.
It’s decades I collect and use knives excessively but 98.3 percent of occasions I unintentionally take my carbon companion to get the job done. And I use to put all my moras around me and check them all once or twice a week.
I have the small forest axe, and am considering one of these to add. Starting to think the hatchet is the better choice since I already have the Small Forest.
I am of Welch descent. I have the Gran Fors Bruk Small Forest Axe. The Small Forest Axe will do everything a hatchet will . You are right a chainsaw will cut wood faster than any axe. My personal preference is Stihl and my favorite toting one is my 021 Stihl. It is not quite as light as my MS 170 but it has an 18” bar and .325 chain and not that 3/8 LP butter chain. My Small Forest axe makes a good wedge banger for felling wedges, but I also usually carry my 40 year old True Temper Boys axe for those time that I need a big banger to help move a leaning tree in the right direction.

Ive used this method on my SS evil eyes slotted stove and my Ti boundless voyage dragonhorse hinged stove, on evil eyes i got a good 45 minutes of useful cook time and maybe 10 minutes of keeping the kettle warm. Thanks for the video, I'm itching to get my bushbox lf i ordered.
I have, and love, the GB Outdoor Axe. It is a tree processing machine... I can limb, buck, and split a 4" tree very quickly. You are right, the Outdoor Axe profile is a fantastic splitter. The phrase you're looking for is 'performs well above its weight.' I carry it with a 7" folding saw, use the saw for cutting just more than halfway through for felling and bucking, then a couple of whacks with the Outdoor Axe chops the rest of the way through. I am not much of a carver and the little I do is done with a knife. I can see how the head profile of the Wildlife Axe with its thinner profile and handle shape may make it better for carving. This video makes me want to look at the Wildlife Axe, and the Hults Bruk Almike. Every axe is a compromise... larger axe heads cut deeper, lighter axe heads carry better. I carry a big axe when car camping but throw the Outdoor Axe on my pack when I'm hiking.

Like yours, not used before. I should use it more myself but I seem to have got a bit of a collecting bug when it come to Scandinavian military back packs, I have the whole range.😂🤷♂️ plus a rather beautiful Swiss “salt and pepper” one that is actually part nettle fibres which gives it its green and white speckled appearance. I’ve just invested in TJ Metal Works mini fire anchor and the pocket fire anchor, beautiful kit, can’t wait to get out and try them, I got the rounded pan holder attachment on my mini one, but I think I’ll get the grill arm as well. Rather fancy the mini spit roast as well sometime- they really do make some beautiful kit!
The moment you said „it could be my bias because i am used to it“ when splitting wood, i hit the subscribe button. That is a really honest and humble way to review two good axes. Many youtubers would not say it like that. I‘m peekin for a while now towards the wildlife axe, i‘m really close to buying it now.
I had one for a while. Very good axe when starting out. If you look at robin wood’s instagram, he’s bringing out a new carving axe soon. Not sure how much they’ll be, but may be worth a look.
@@welshwoodsman i bought Terava Jakaripuuko in 80CrV2 and mora 511 carbon because i thought they had good edge retention and toughness. then i learned in knife steel nerds website: 1.that 1084 and 80CrV2 have almost double the toughness of 1095 with same edge retention 2.that stainless steels had better edge retention 3.that some stainless steels have even better toughness than 1084 and 80CrV2. for example i bought Mora companion stainless because it said there that AEB-L, 14C28N, 12C27 and 13C26 all have better toughness AND edge retention than 1084 and 80Crv2. i kind of feel like i just assumed for so long that carbon had to be better because it sacrificed corrosion resistance but i was just wrong all this time. thats why i asked. i guess that it makes sense that carbon can feel nicer or be sharper or easily be stropped back. im trying to think of a reason to keep using my Terava in 80CrV2 after i get the Companion is 12C27/14C28N..... i guess i will only use Companion from now on if it has more toughness more edge retention and even stainless (which i wouldnt normally even look at)
