XX years after the movie (XXI after the original TV series; turning a blind eye to the "Further..." on BBC1 in MCMLXXV), Lurcio finds that his new-found freedom is more of a millstone round his neck than being a slave was. No doubt many folk in the recently-capitalised and democratised Russia would have recognised his plight.

I think a lot of people forget just how much a talented and genuinely funny performer he was,... He nurtured his own unique style of comedy , that was broad of tone , an full of double entendre and saucy innuendo,...the mood and tone of shows like Up Pompeii was perfect for his camp lucid style, and non-stop one liners .....he's still missed to this day

Frank always worked best to a live audience, so unfortunately this canned laughter debacle doesn't live up to expectations. He's pure class though, as always, but this version of 'Up Pompeii' isn't a patch on what it was XX years earlier.

The script was weak compared to the original Tolbert Rothwell material. Plus the original supporting cast missing here - makes me realize how important they were to the overall success of Up Pompeii!

He had heart problems during the last 2 years of his life, but this was made even worse when at Christmas 1991 on a holiday in the Amazon he contracted a virus, which really did more damage to his heart.

Frankie Howerd was a great performer with his own individual style. This was shown perfectly in the original 'Up Pompeii' series from the 1969/70 era. There episodes were outstanding because of Frankie, the directors close-ups, and the excellent writing of Tolbot Rothwell. This follow-up is a poor imitation of the original. Only a few embers remain.

@@pbworld7858 Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Williams were both Carry On regulars. Williams' mother was shocked to see Hawtrey was an "out and proud" gay man, as her own son never thought of doing that kind of thing, of course.

What they failed to do was watch the previous ones... No-one is funny in this. I expect Mr Howard was under pressure and even he doesn't capture the free spirit that made the original endearing. Plus it isn't a live audience so they took away his forte and ruined it. Shame, it is unwatchable.

The production value may be better but the show doesn't hold a candle to the original far as the comedy is concerned and I do love Frankie Howard.

The BBC were originally approached to make this revival episode but turned it down - hence ITV stepped in & LWT made it. There is no canned laughter because LWT never used this for their comedies - it was shown before a live audience.

Not that bad, still some funny moments, think Frankie had slowed down and his energy was what made the originals so good, would like to have seen some more of the original cast back as well, Lurcio's mistress Ammonia and her son Nauseous for example.
