Hi, great talk, I'm just going to address the first 10 minutes or so, as that's where I'm up to and have some thoughts I'd like to share about your take on the learning process in regards to these 'micro-trainings', ie 15-30 secs on and off. My grandfather was a PT instructor in the Royal Marines and often it would be the case that soldiers could be over exerted by bad training to seizures, not that my grandfather ever over trained anyone. Contrasting with teaching methods I learnt while training for the Olympics in China, basically the only country to provide the highest level of tuition for my chosen sport, Wushu. The mantra there would be "Fang Song", or Relax, which was constantly repeated over and over and over because the movement of Westerners in general is very over stiff. Needless to say this did garner results. Now, from what your saying this is like taking power drills and allowing the neurology to interpret the new information, passed on in the brain by the new neural pathways, and the opportunity for the brain to 'solidify', or become accustomed to these new neural pathways allows the construction of a 'bigger picture' within the brain to make accessible the new and improved movements at a higher level due to the relax period. I think it was George Leonard, in his book Mastery, who states that the learnings are actually made in the plateaus. So, I think that's really talking about the "macro-learnings" in regards to training for weeks, months and years, whereas in this method your talking off it's a definite "micro-advantage" as each new stroke, jump, throw etc, is registered at a higher level each time BECAUSE now the brain knows, and understands, which is indeed the recipe for wisdom, that there is a digestion period being allowed to increase rapid/accelerated learning. I often use contrasts to highlight my points, so, in the name of good habits I'll describe it thusly. Imagine you have an athlete who continuously burns himself out, not good, an athlete who continuously make half hearted efforts, not good, then comes now the athlete who is composed, eloquent and somewhat mysterious in that he makes little to no effort, as he's so relaxed, mainly because he's so familiar with the movements. He makes short stabs at his efforts and executes perfectly every time. He rests well, heart rate stable, mind clear and his knowledge of his endeavour precedes his actions giving him that mystique of a certain gravity unseen with other athletes. I think the offer your describing is nearer to the development of such athletes as this, in fact I'd guarantee it as all of my research points in the same direction, which of course I can evidence.

I think a segment that would be really interesting that you could do is if you watch a part of a basketball game and commentate over it: what are you looking for when you watch a play? The good things, the bad things, just your thoughts and feelings, and from a development point of view what should a young player be looking for.

Love it! I would love to see a podcast about how you would go about training different age groups like say 5th graders vs JH vs HS vs college/pro in the off-season given all the groups also have bball commitments during the week as well. What qualities would you try to maximize and what kind of workout split would you have them on to build full body muscle, maximize athleticism, and also keep systematic fatigue down so S&C doesn’t get in the way of their sport.

When I'm coaching youth league I always hate to have the kids standing in line waiting and watching for their turn to take a rep in any particular drill, but it sounds like it's actually beneficial. Would love a podcast for us old heads trying to play into our 40s, 50s and 60s. Keys for maximizing longevity, reducing injury risk and general joint/tendon degradation, maybe some old man moves or necessary playing style adjustments (is it true jumping off one leg is bad the older you get? should I 86 the pull up J or the jump stop?)

Ive heard you talk about recovery speed and age a lot of times and how as you get older you really have to dial in how youre loading yourself, and how as a young person you can just handle wayy more becuase your recovery speed is higher. As a young person ive always wondered ideally, how should we manage this? Should we try to reach our recovery capacity? Or should we think more about optimizing things to be fresher more often and potentially get a similar amount of gains?
