This truck came in running but the check engine light was on. Supposedly a shop replace the timing chains with new ones but they didn’t do anything other then locked up the come phasers
Lock the phasers out! Had that done time I bought mine, it has 275000 miles on it now! Drive it every day. See them everyday, everwhere here! Pull my camper, car trailers from time to time.
@mrljenkins86 the cam phasers! The concept was brilliant! But, as most implications, they were on the leading edge of technology! The idea was to vary the camshaft centerline in relation to the actual cam shaft centerline in relation to the actual top dead zero relationship of the actual cam position to the actual top dead center to top dead center of the piston! You can get by with camshafts that you're told were too aggressive for the application you're choosing! Timing applications and compression ratios would be used to weigh ratios all factor into your decision! I worked for Sheaffler, the largest OME supplier in the world! But, I learned more about timing and camshaft centerline and varialable camshaft centerline applications at work than at the track! The technology was actually engineered for small engines for fuel economy and efficiency, but the same technology could be applicable to larger high-performance engines and has! Technology isn't our enemy. If we embrace it and properly apply it, we could have more power and efficiency! The days of trailering your car to the track could be over, except for the big dogs!
Una duda amigo. Se puede bloquear un solo cam phaser? Ya que mi ford le suena el lado del chófer solamente..oh recomiendas bloquear de una vez los 2 lados..
yes, the original stock camphaser always go bad. Cloyes Timing Chain Set 9-0391SBVVT this is the kit that I used all the time. Many people tell me to use OEM on the comments, but I never have had a problem with them. i hope this helps
don't forget to change the Vtv solenoids too! Dorman OE Solutions VVT Solenoid DOR 917-200 that's what I used. the stock ones always go bad as well. maybe you should start with that lots of times that it is the problem.
Sr i can work on any place any time anywhere. I am not scare of work. I have my own business and I have the joy to work anywhere and any time in my shop. I became my own boss and I don’t have to work for anyone if I don’t want to. That’s the beauty of knowledge. Knowledge is power
Damn you must be talkin about my father-in-law that guy loves silicones gasket maker why not just buy the gasket it is probably cheaper to buy the gasket than a tube of gasket maker
That engine has lots of life left when repaired properly like you are doing… use OEM parts as the aftermarkets fail quickly. Easiest way to tell if cam bearing wear has happened is to grab the passenger side cam (being it gets oiled last) and push/pull on it and look for oil squeezing out by the bearings. Also, as part of this repair, should be the Melling high-volume oil pump and definitely change the rockers to the new part number. Someone in the comments said to use 5w-20… that’s wrong -they did that for fuel mileage at the expense of wear. Use 5W-30 synthetic and you’ll easily get 250k miles out of the engine. FordTechMakuloco has made a living off of fixing/bullet-proofing just these engines and covers all the aspects really well on his YT channel. Also, the 09-14s have high failure rates of the transmission cooler line coupler breaking up and it almost immediately burns up the transmission. They are worth preventatively changing. ✌🏻
Hopefully you replaced the phasers with OEM Ford phasers, anything else will not last been into multiple 5.4 that were done less then 10,000 miles ago didn't use OEM phasers and they fall apart had to redo the job with the correct parts, also all the valvetrain components should also be changed new roller followers, all engines loose oil pressure as they gain miles that's how the variable valve timing works is from proper oil pressure so lockout the phasers, long story short REPLACE EVERYTHING Ford phasers, timing chain kit, and new roller followers, sendoff the computer to get the variable timing disabled
I always used OEM parts but in this case the customer did not want to spend the extra money. the kit that I am getting from cloyes has been working out good for me. the trucks I did 5 years ago still running till this day. I haven't an issue so far, I agree with you on what you said but till this day I have not locked the phasers. I love how this engine perform with the vvt still active
@@antonioaguirre6166 vvt is good until your oil pressure drops to around 20 then the only fix is a new engine or lock out the phasers then the oil pressure doesn't matter then also the phasers will outlast the timing chain and guides
@@sprintcardriver8 yes true, if the engine is too wore out the best thing to do is replace it. Have you checked out my order vídeo where I’m dropping a 2014 5.4L vvt expedition engine into my 2004 ford f150?
I’m a firm believer of OEM parts too but you don’t have too. I’ve been using Cloyes timing chain sets for the last 10 years. I have done at least 200 of this trucks in the last 5 years and never had one come back.
This entire video is about how other are bad and how your are good so you can charge more... but we didn't see any work here.... !! so how can we know if you got any knowledge ?!!
I went the UTI in Houston (Universal technical Institute). I graduated with honers Sr. I will highly recommend this school for anyone that wants to go into this business. A lot of the old school mechanics give me a hard time till this days but I can work on any car any year any model and figure anything out. I have some well known dealers that bring me work cuz sometimes they can’t even figure it out, and that’s why I charged the big bucks
Ford dealership technician here. That engine is way too far gone, by looking at how it looks inside. Definitely doesn't look like an engine that has been maintained regularly (regular oil changes with the CORRECT oil filter and oil viscosity for that engine 5W20). I would have pulled the cam bearing caps at the very front (the ones closest to the phasers), and the moment there are any signs of wear seen on either the cam journal and/or cam bearing cap surfaces, it would be GAME OVER. Needs a long block. You try to band aid this particular issue on any 5.4L 3-valve Ford V8, and it will bite you in the ass!!! I've seen it time, and time, and time again!!!
