Yeah it's absolutely crazy the amount of knowledge it requires to be an Auto Tech, and now with electric cars you need to be an Electrician as well! Some say it takes more knowledge than a Medical Doctor to be a good technician....and how often does the human body change...its the same make and model everytime 😁

If you’re having issues w these things, it’s time for a good quality reman crate motor, don’t waste your time with the cam phasers, they would be working if there was oil pressure, & because they’re not they’re garbage along with the motor. Grenade the motor then drop a crate motor in it not from the crap yard that’s not a 3v & it’ll be fine.

We have similar problems at the plant where the 5.0L is built. If the exhaust VCT isn't installed correctly it will ruin the VCT and nose of the cam when it goes through the machine that checks the timing. I said all that just to agree that if you don't install the VCT correctly and torque it properly you're wasting your time and money. Great video and i agree with another commenter that this guy is thorough and explains what to look for and what not to do on certain repairs.

That’s probably the thing I enjoy most about your videos: You don’t just start replacing parts and say “Maybe this will work” or “Maybe this will fix it”. You actually take the time and do actual diagnosis and do a process of elimination. Part by part, step-by-step. This is the way it should be. But as you already know, a lot of dealerships don’t do that. They just start replacing parts and hope that it’ll fix the problem. Keep up the good work.

I have the same code popping up P0345. I changed the CamShaft sensor, no luck... I pulled the VCT solenoid and cranked the engine just like you did... Still gets me the error code. Now... I'm going in to check the phaser. It's been worked on before. Prior owner had some work done on it. I'm fearing they also used aftermarket sub quality parts. Now. I'm going to fix it. Great diag! It seems like I won't see these 3valves for a while then all of a sudden they start coming in one after another, at my age of 56 and working on so many different car lines I definitely need a refresher in these engines from time to time. Down here in South Louisiana we don't have to deal with rust and most of these trucks are in good shape, but if I can learn any thing about any vehicle especially these engines I'm all ears. I'm one of the few shops that will work on these engines, a lot of the other shops have been burned on them so they won't touch them. Great video looking forward to the next one!

Sea Hawk Toyota and Honda have had relatively few issues with their VVT systems in well maintained vehicles. There’s nothing wrong with the design. It’s the junk parts combined with the lack of maintenance that has made Ford’s such a nightmare. GM’s V-6 engines aren’t having major problems as well due to garbage O.E. Parts.

Sometimes when coming to a stop, the timing on one bank will not go back to base. It's like it's stuck activated.

That is an oil pressure and volume issue. If you are sure everything was installed properly and the pan has been cleaned out with no startup rattle then I recommend performing a crankshaft end play check. If ok then use 5w-30 oil, if the concern is still there then use Rotella 5w-40 oil.

I'm not a fan of the 3V but so many of the problems with them are avoidable with proper diagnosing and OEM parts. So many mechanics should watch your videos.

Man if the remanufactured engines are gonna be rebuilt like this then I'll just do it myself with an engine rebuilder.

Really really wish there was a mechanic who is as thorough as you around Omaha, NE. I have some type of issue with mine but don’t want to do it myself in fear of messing something up. I’m one who would just do all parts under front cover. Chain to phasers.

I can really use your help on this! I have a 2004 Ford F-150 with 155,000 miles on it around 100,000 miles the timing was done on it the full subang with moterctaft parts! At 140,000 my transmission went out, I had it replaced but the transmission shop damaged the transmission lines so all the fluid leaked out 2 days later. They put new lines on it but my motor was running really rough and it was indicative of cam phasers. Took it to the shop and me and the mechanic got into the front end and realized my timing chain has stretched and it broke a guide, we redid the entire timing on it and it’s been driving perfectly until the past few thousand miles, ever since I purchased the truck it’s had a p1000 code and it doesn’t throw a check engine light but that’s not my main problem my problem is I’ll go to work in the morning start up the truck and I see a puff of smoke out the tail pipe for a second and sometimes when I get on the grass smoke will come out, also when I get home and put in in reverse to back up the driveway it starts to run really rough but if I get the rpms above 1500 for a second everything smooths out, it throws a p0022 code and I’m really confused now! What should I look for. It has new camshaft position sensors, new vct things, new spark plugs, and new coil packs! Please help!

I wish I could afford to have a tech look over my truck. To have a technician diagnose it and if it happens to be the issue that I think it is it will cost me more than I spent on my truck to have it fixed.

06 3v has same codes, at times will drop down and idle rough. New timing kit, new oil pump. New solenoids and phasers only dr side. So I prefer and installed a ford vct still does the same thing. Swapped cmp sensors from side to side, no change. I'm lost.

Not sure how I feel having a 5.4 3v f150 knowing there are guys like Brian making a living out of just doing repairs on this motor..that says a lot. But when this thing is running good it's an awesome truck. I have 190k and I do have a ticking but also using about 1/2 qt oil in 700 miles or so, I'm so torn on having a timing job done or just letting it last as long as it can the way it is then put a new ford rebuilt in it.
