For second I though, that's one deep pond. Then I realized it's a baby playing inside 🍻🍻🍻🍻

This project stresses me out.. and I’m just a guy watching on a phone 1,000 miles away taking a dump. Looks great, so happy for you. Going to be nice to look at while splitting wood. Once your son went on it to play, it really showed how big the pond is

As they say better late than never, the bulldozer operator has done a fabulous job on the pond.. getting the dozer at a later point than earlier is actually a blessing in disguise for this project. Remember seeing the past videos had more comments for getting a dozer.

Looks pretty good to me and you made me a believer in the use of a dozer. Yesterday I had a dozer guy come out. My pond has been in for 8 years but the original guy left 3 sides rough and full of boulders and stumps. I'm in NW Arkansas and the ground is just continuous rocks and boulders and I only have a small JD 1025R tractor and I have worked on getting it looking better and smooth for over 2 years with little progress. The dozer guy had a JD 750C (?) and in right at an hour removed the stumps and huge boulders and smoothed everything where I can grow grass and cut it with my tractor. Also made a nice spillway and did some drainage behind the house. Total about 2 hours and $500 and now things are "right" finally. Yep, a dozer is well worth having.

Nice job, Adam. Great idea to make the back slope of the dam such that you can easily mow it. On of my biggest pet peeves with a pond build is when the outsides get overgrown and it makes the pond look bad. Good planning.

Great job Adam, in lieu of the sunken pallets for fish habitat you might consider some concrete culvert pipes for fish to hide in. That way you don't have to worry about the pallets rotting under water. We did that and used 3 and 4 foot pipes and it appears the fish love them.

In a deeper pond BAD water accumulates in the bottom. It would be good to have the over flow designed to be forced off the bottom and out of the pond. It keeps your water in much better shape and helps prevent what is called roll over. Do your research on this.

Happy for you the project is taking shape, but me thinks your son is happier! I know you have a standpipe. However, are you considering putting in an overflow spillway? I would because of these intense microbusts that dump huge amounts of water in a short time. I'd place the spillway not to far from where the spring water inlet is located. Given the calculated volume of water projected for your pond, I'd have two overflow spillways opposite each other. A sudden 'over top' creates the possibility for a breach. Just a FYI suggestion. Cheers...
@HometownAcres
@HometownAcres 3 года назад
Yes the emergency spillway is going to be installed right near the spring inflow. It’s going to be 2 8” pipes running horizontally through the top of the dam very near virgin ground. If the stand pipe is 24” below the top of the dam. The emergency overflow will be 12” from the top of the dam
@ross6343
@ross6343 3 года назад
@@HometownAcres Good on the emergency spillway(s)! I'd suggest going with 16" - maybe even 24" and here's why. Given the slope and area of your pond's watershed, a weather event like Ida could present water handling issues. Just saying better safe then sorry. Besides, it's cheaper now then the cost of a potential remediation into the future. It's not a question of 'if' a weather event like Ida will happen, it's a 'when' question.
@patblack2291
@patblack2291 3 года назад
@@HometownAcres If you're going with pipes be sure to have antivortex baffle plates installed so the flow is maximized. You may want to actually do some calculations on how to size the spillway, since undersized = dam breach. I incorrectly thought you were going to install a nice wide level spillway a foot below the dam top just through doing earthworks, no pipe needed, that could handle a tropical storm stalling out over your area and dropping 6" of rain in a day, and never clog with debris as a pipe could. 4:1 will be a nice pitch for the backside of the dam, mowable and a good sled run for kids in the winter! You might see 5 - 10% settlement of the dam so be sure to take that allowance into account when setting levels. Great to see the dam shaping up so nicely!
