What a good feeling it is to have our second acre cleared! I'll be preparing this area for a cover crop that will help manage soil erosion, weeds, and soil fertility. This will help prepare the ground for next years crops. It will be interesting to see this new acre comes together and what it might become in the future!

I have no doubt that some of your most trusted 7-days friends would come and help you out on the property.

Wow, I had know Idea the property was so huge. I agree with you on your water issue on the sugar cane. That extra water is 5-10 degrees on the soil.

Looking good Grand Spartan. Deer can decimate a crop quick people dont realize how much they can mow down even a small group of 6-8 can do some serious damage. Hoping things go well going forward for you & family.

Appreciate that Tanker! The one deer took out a good bit of what was out there in two nights. He's probably around 75 lbs but very hungry! It is so dry around here they are looking for whatever they can find to eat.

Nice job. The time on the equipment is time well spent. It saves time in the long run. I have good luck with the deer and ground hogs with the electric fence on a small 30' x 50' garden, one wire cow height and one low. I think it scares them off from the zap. We have a lot of deer and ground hogs around our property we never had any garden success until an old farmer suggested the electric fence, plus it was cheap and easy to install in a small area. Probably would not work on your deer with a large area, may work on the little garden. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Looking forward to more.

Thank you Marc! I will be looking into an electric fence soon. Looks like that may also be cheaper option for the new area just cleared. Appreciate you following along!

Great Job GS. So glad you are doing well moving forward. It certainly looks great from the drone. Too bad you have to deal with the wildlife so much. Look forward to see the setup of the hoop house/greenhouse! lol

Thanks Jedi! The animals have not really been that bad out there so far. This was the first real issue I've had since the initial clearing. Up until today still no deer in the field again. Going to have to get creative moving forward with electric fences and such.

@@GrandOutdoors Yes sir lol it will be neat seeing an electric fence again. My dad had one when we were little living in Texas, mostly for the cattle but to also keep the garden safe.

Sir, I'm just an old country boy but that looks like more than one acre to these old eyes . That took a lot of work by yourself . I don't think you have a lazy bone in your body . Now you may need to build another bridge on the other end to connect the two and save yourself from having to drive all the way around when planting .
@GrandOutdoors
@GrandOutdoors 3 года назад
Thanks Eagle Rider! It measures 300' x 150' which is an acre. The other side with the building is roughly 220' x 220' so a little more than an acre. At the end of this clearing there is a small path that I cut in with the rental many months ago. The original entrance goes across the ditch there that connects with the highway. I have been holding on to a gate for a while thinking I may eventually use that entrance to gain access. Right now I will hold off due to privacy concerns. If I put up another gate and road there, it just gives people that drive by more reason to be curious about what is back there.
@eaglerider1826
@eaglerider1826 3 года назад
@@GrandOutdoors The area I was referring to for the second bridge @28:20 , drawing a straight line connecting the tractor path on the outside of your fencing to the second field . Would not affect your privacy , but will take time and money .

maybe get a couple of wedges to bust that stubborn stump apart, make it easier to pull out.
@GrandOutdoors
@GrandOutdoors 3 года назад
You'll have to refer to an old video where I dug out around it, but that stump helps to hold together the ditch bank around the bridge. Don't think I'll ever dig it out of there but do need to get it lower to the ground. I think I'll just cut it down to ground level and call it good.

@@GrandOutdoors ah i see, then maybe if you know a buddy with a stump grinder? would make for a cool video, those industrial stump grinders are amazing!
@GrandOutdoors
@GrandOutdoors 3 года назад
Think I'm going to cut it down as low as possible with the ole chainsaw. Otherwise I would need to rent a grinder just for that one stump.

Thank you Darryl! The deer won't mess with the sugarcane so it'll be fine. I may have to look into electric fence sometime in the future. Since I patched the fence they haven't tried to get in again.

GS I think it is time to implement shotgun turrets in the garden. Save the garden and you get meat, leather, and bones!!!
@wildhellion1
@wildhellion1 3 года назад
Hey GS, next ya need to just go ahead(gore-head) and cut down the trees between the two cleared areas a little bit, and expand on the bridge a little to get wider and heavier loads through there safely and make it all just one big area. Whattaya think?
@GrandOutdoors
@GrandOutdoors 3 года назад
If I cut down those trees I will have no wind break for our crops and future hoop houses. As mentioned in the video it would also compromise the integrity of the ditch bank. That bridge will hold a fully loaded 70,000 lb dump truck no problem. I had him come out and inspect the bridge a few times as I was building it. He has crossed over the entrance bridge multiple times with a full load. That bridge has much less rock and fill than the large bridge in the back.

Looks like really sandy soil brother
@GrandOutdoors
@GrandOutdoors 3 года назад
The loamy soil out there is great for drainage. No water will sit in the field drowning your crops or causing rot. I turned all the soil up with the excavator bucket from one end to the other leaving a lot of clay on top. Once I amend and prep the soil for next year, it should produce great crops just like the field across the ditch.
@Ulthrinifyed
@Ulthrinifyed 3 года назад
You talk about you have lost time on side projects like restoring the excavator. Is it really time you have lost? Its not like you have been sunbathing at the beach!! Everything you have shown us have been steps forward. Only place where i would say you lost time is when you build the bridge. Famous words: Learning by doing.... And you did. Shuffling prioritets around don't have to be a bad thing. You are doing a )"#¤% amazing job that i would never have the motivation to do.
@GrandOutdoors
@GrandOutdoors 3 года назад
Thank you Ulthrinifyed! I guess I was looking at time lost clearing land more than anything in that statement. I'd hoped to have a lot more land cleared by now, but without restoring the excavator I would never achieved this acre and the many other things I've done with it. Appreciate the kind words!
