This is a great video. I use one coat and two coats plastering. On lovely flat new boards one coat is fine as long as it ends up 3mm thick. . On an old house with damaged walls two coats can really help sort a lot of problems before you put on the finish coat. Both techniques are good . Different situations call for different techniques. Keep the great videos coming. 👍

i learnt 2 coat plastering, after 2 years i went to one coat and have done for 13 years never had a call back painters love my work customers love the work never had a complaint ever, cuts time doing alot more work in one go if want. if your replastering old walls by all means 2 coat unless you built out bad bits then skim but other than that one coat all day, still the same finish some people just cant one coat cause you learn 2 coat

@@nathanevans6331mix 1 part pva to 3 parts water, use an old 4pint regular plastic milk container. Brush or roller it on and wait 10 or 15 minutes for it to dry then put another coat of pva/water on, wait 5 or 10 minutes for the wall to go tacky, then your walls ready for plastering, it's a must because it bonds the plaster properly to the surface of wall and it stops the plaster drying to fast and cracking, better to be safe than sorry.

Great vid Alex I generally 2coat but there are times when I have one coated and sponged and got a good finish. Totally agree with what you say about the traditional plasterers ‘spongers ain’t plasterers crap’ you can say that about any trade when I first started out the old boy Chippeys never had all the cordless tools and chop saws just literally a bag of hand tools and saws they actually sharpened themselves. So yeah if your finish ain’t compromised and you get a good finish using a sponge why not if it makes your life easier 👍

I do use a spray bottle but never used a sponge, a spatula/speedskim or a flexitrowel - Never even knew they were a thing until recently!!! I'll admit I do get tiger stripes every now and then but walls are flat and you don't see the stripes once it's painted.

We try to 2 coat most walls as we just find it's a flatter finish. But we sponge that also, just for the reason it dries more uniform.. And as for your point about bg not recommending sponges they also dont recommend using pva and we all do that also.. 😁. Good video Alex 👍

I'm currently doing my level 2 NVQ and one coat plastering is something that was massively frowned upon by my teachers. In the coming months, my NVQ assessor will be coming on-site to assess me for my NVQ and if he spots me applying one coat, he will definitely fail me. Interestingly a friend of mine works on building sites in London and apparently it's now standard practice to apply one coat of plaster on new builds.

My best advice would be to stick with 2 coating until you have more experience. Learn the tradition way first then you can experiment with little tips and tricks. Great trade to be in. Well done. I agree stick to two coat tbh. You will get the most consistent results. 1 cost is handy to know to gain extra m² and to save on a bit of time. But I wouldn’t use it as your go to method, unless all your doing is board work on site. Learn the traditional way first; then add experience by using different techniques.

@@AlexMorleyPlastering Thanks! I really appreciate your advice. I'll stick with the 2 coat plaster and traditional methods for the foreseeable future, then after earning my NVQ I might experiment with other methods to improve my productivity. ( I still haven't used a spatula speed skim or sponge as they were not encouraged by my teachers. I did the entire procedure from beginning to end with a stainless steel Marshalltown ). PS- I massively appreciate all your videos and I would heartily encourage you to keep up the outstanding work.

You will come realise in time that site work is all rush and tear and no finesse.. I'm a chippy of 30 years and I walked away from site work years ago I couldn't stand it. It's all who can do what the fastest no matter the quality of finish and personally I take pride in what I do.. It will be good for you to learn meeting lots of people and will certainly keep you busy, tbf It's probably not so bad for a plasterer but as a chippy people nailing stud walls to the screed with a paslode and sticking kitchens in with gripfill is just shocking. I wouldn't wanna buy a new site house I'd see all the imperfections 🤷‍♂️ good luck mate and enjoy your job and have some pride in what you do, it's not all about the money tho it is nice 😉 👍

How things change EH?? ...... When I started, (Traditional) plastering would be a 'Three - Coat - Finish' ....... Steel Float - Wooden Float - Steel Float ...... Then just as it was tightening up a wet cross-grain-float (wood again) would be used all over, much like a Sponge-Float these days. It would also be used to make sure our internals and externals (pre-metal beads of course) were absolutely Spot-On :-) ........... Finishing Sand & Cement Render and Board ...... I think one-coat can be successful these days because of the quality of the 'fixings' - in our days the boards were all over the place, and we used Four sand - One lime - One cement for our rendering which gave a 'lot' of suction. You would never get away with one-coat back then with the materials we had - No Multi-finish until the 80's/90's - I think ?? ..... And the promotional BLURB from gypsum was that it 'could' be used as a One-Coat finish (Not that I ever did) and could still do two houses a week on my own :-)

By adding moisture to the plaster you improve plasticity. Giving that you are using long soft edge blade (as long as you can fit on the wall - 2400mm on big wall or ceiling!) you can achieve almost perfect flat and smooth finish. Never use small trowel on large surface with single coat as it only caused dents and imperfections.

@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 года назад
The problem with both of those methods is you can’t modulate the rate it goes off. It’s all or nothing with dirty water or out of date bags. I’d use half time tbh if you want to shorten the set.
@adamprice9214
@adamprice9214 2 года назад
Dirty water, out of date plaster, plaster that has a tear in the bag warm water and mixing to firm then adding more water and mixing old gear in with a new mix are all things that will accelerate the rate in which plaster will go off and it's so hard to know just how quick.. do any of the above one minute it's alright the next you go back yo your gear and it's gone, all these things can get you in a world of s#!t. A lot of plaster lately seems to be going off double quick as it is I've experienced this as have many others 🤷‍♂️

I'm a old school 2 coat plasterer ( at least ), 1 coat isnt proper plastering in my opinion
@saltytree729
@saltytree729 Месяц назад
Old school plastering never had boards like we do now, board finish at 3mm is fine and you wouldn’t know any different between one or two coats, stood infront of 40 year old timers and had them baffled at which coat was which and they didn’t have a fucking clue. That extra 30 quid a bag makes all the difference though, can make one bag of plaster stretch 20m and that’s nearly 80 quid a bag 👍

What opinions on felt brushes, I haven't seen videos on them
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 года назад
Tbh I saw them when they came out a few years ago. A bit of a gimmick imo. How to you brush the skirting line and corners ect. Just another thing to carry around I think.
@NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot
@NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot 2 года назад
I’ve always wondered that. In the old videos of the US plasterers you see them using an amazing technique with it, but like Alex says, how do you bring in the corners and ceiling like etc

@@NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot I use felt brushes, trust me they are a wonder to use. Used them when I was working in Boston, they create a type of fat that you can slide your trowel over, been using them for about 12 years. I do sponge now and then, but to be honest, I one coat, double back with the same batch, fatten in, leave, spray trowel, leave then felt brush, leave again then cross trowel with a 16 inch Marshall town Flexi, job done. 2 and a half hours max. Can get about 2.15 on a good day.

I see you have a cough, try gargling with cider vinegar at the end of the day, this may help

Out the box. MT Cement currently. Not the 13” plastering version. Fully broken in. Not sure. The NELA is unbelievably good.
