I have been driving OTR for 28 years. About 8 years ago, I had my first experience with a blowout on my steer axle. I used to always act out and practice scenarios for what I would and wouldn’t do if I did indeed have a blowout. I practiced for years. One day, while loaded with cars, I actually had a blowout. Everything I thought I would do went out of the window. I said that only to say, you never know what you will do until you are actually faced with a situation. It sounds good to say that you would or should do this, that and the third but Only after you have faced a situation, only then, you can expect what you would do.
@craigandnem4597 first of all you should have known better then to have recaps on steers ,that's probably what happened or you was running on bald tires !! Now getting back to the accident !! That driver didn't even have the load secured properly ,that bulldozer shouldn't have come off the trailer, you not talking to no fool here !! He you must be just a steering wheel holder !!! I had a blowout on I -25 north of Denver Colorado one time , because dam idiot terminal manager lied about the tires he put on my truck ! Guess what !!! I steered that s o b to the shoulder of the road !! You ain't talking to know fool here !!!!
I had a driver pull out in front of my loaded log truck and I thought about swerving, for half a second and then decided to brace for impact. If I was going to die because of someone's stupidity, they were going with me. Somehow, I managed to keep it upright and not run them over, but I learned a long time ago, don't swerve.
Yeah they are not respecting of 18 wheeler drivers at all!!! Yesterday I saw a car just cut off an 18 mere inches from his front bumper. Didn’t even think anything about it! People need to give the 18 wheelers space. I know they can be a little slow and annoying sometimes but this is the result. 😢
@Diecastjoe yep and it's a lot slower if we don't drive decently and respectfully around those big trucks. But most of the idiot drivers aren't even aware of half the near accidents they cause. They continue on driving like Mr Magoo .
It's gotta be tough to not swerve. Kinda a built in stay alive reaction. I have taken out more than one animal by not swerving, but a car? I don't know if I could.
@@TheMhannah100 You get better at not swerving. Especially if you're on a motorcycle. Use the brakes and hope that whatever you're not swerving at makes an effort. I knew a guy who cut a deer in half on a Harley. Not a scratch on him. Barely any damage to the bike. Yeah it was messy..
As a newly retired truck driver all I can say is SHARE THE ROAD with trucks! A car is going to lose 95% of the time against an 80k lb truck. I DON'T SWERVE. If someone else's bad driving is going to cause an accident, they are going to be included in the accident. The only exclusion to that rule is if there are kids in the vehicle. Someone died because of a rude, impatient driver. 🤬
You swerve for children? How exactly are you spotting kids in the vehicle and deciding to swerve in a split second? Not to mention most vehicle have tinted rear windows, so it's going to be hard to see them... Even harder when you have a half second to react...
@usaturnuranus I do know what you mean. And I find it to be rubbish. You aren't Spiderman. You can't react faster than any other human. And neither can the dude claiming he looks for kids before deciding what evasive maneuver to take, in a split second... the blink of an eye, like he's Peter Parker... GTFOOH...
I didn't hear if the car that caused the trailer to swerve was stopped after the accident. If not, I hope someone's dashcam caught the risky move and the plate so that he can be held accountable for causing a deadly accident.
We focus too much on "causation" not prevention. These Big Rigs are too aggressive pushing the limits of the roadways. A passive aggressive game of outdistancing motorists is commonplace. Not in a manner consistent with crash PREVENTION.
@@williamrobinson6680you don't know the pressure of driving one of those, or the distance it takes to stop one. The brakes have a 3 second delay before they begin to stop the truck.
So if it was the Mazda,I hope they make damn sure it was the Mazda’s fault and they don’t pin the blame on the trucker and the company as in many cases they do
If a deer jumps in front of you - or as in this case, if you have a bulldozer as a load and someone veers into your lane - you have to stay in your lane and absorb that contact. 18 wheelers can't be wildly veering from side-to-side as if they are a Honda civic to avoid someone in the next lane, or else this happens. They teach that I assume as part of the CDL.
Truck drivers cause more death to innocent that had nothing to do with his reactions and damage by trying to avoid hitting the person causing the problem.
As an ex team driver you're taught to never swerve to miss an animal or foolish people driving into you , stay in your lane and take the hit , the person causing the mess to begin with will probably run anyway.
The fact that they say the driver of the Mazda (the car that cut in front of the semi) was also taken to hospital leads me to believe he didn't just cut the semi off, but actually collided with it. A collision can definitely send a semi swerving into the center barrier and if there's any damage to the steering axel as a result of the collision with the car, then the semi driver won't have been able to counter it.
Some folks here are saying that truck drivers need to make sure that these loads are secure. The man is hauling a bulldozer on a semi going at a determined speed. Impact force has a lot to do with what happened here. Chains do break from excessive force and impacts. Hitting the barrier with all that weight is a key factor to the bulldozer coming loose. But to say he needed to make sure his load was secure is a bit unfair. Its unfortunate that someone died in this situation but, you can't really say the trucker driver is at fault he did secure his load properly. Many people wear their seat belts while driving and some are still found ejected from their vehicles after a severe accident.
@@_DB.COOPER Are you stupid or what? It doesn't matter how good you secure your load. Slamming into a concrete barrier will make your load go flying no matter how it is secured. Did you even watch the video? His trailer got sheered of the semi tractor which almost broke the tractor in half. Not to mention no where did they say the semi wasn't traveling at a safe speed. I'm no fan of truck drivers but you gotta be real stupid to blame this crash on the trucker. The Mazda driver is the one to blame for cutting of and colliding with the semi.
It is the drivers responsibility to secure the load for transport. You also need to look at the dozer being hauled, a John Deere 850 LGP, which tells me by the size it was overweight and over width. the damage to the end of the barrier wall and not the adjacent barrier tells me that the blade caught the joint. You’re not going to be able to put enough securement on that to keep it on the trailer, impact broke the trailer. Sad situation and prayers for all involved.
The amount of FORCE needed to move those barriers is extreme, beyond anything a normal 18 wheeler can do, so the fact that it was destroyed and moved... wow
I've been driving a (sotra) large box truck for 14 years. only had 1 accident when someone made a sudden left turn in front of me (I'm going west she was going east). I've started allowing the knuckleheads to "do their thing" and not slowing down or moving over unless I absolutely have to. I frequently carry pallets of lead acid batteries so I try to keep my distance but at least once a day someone decides it's OK to fill in the open space. people in small cars have no idea what might be in these trucks yet they think we can stop in the same distance as a Civic.
Never change lanes in front of a semi truck and then hit your brakes. Everyone in Houston does this dumb stuff. I drive local in Houston in a rig daily and get cut off like crazy.
You get cut off because you are in the fast lane with a commercial vehicle. Get in the granny lane. Take your time, and let everyone in. I drive in the Twin Cities loop. No one ever cuts me off.
@@todayslist37737 bumper to bumper as far as the eye can see. All you can do is stay in the granny lane and enjoy the ride. Keep a good 15 second space. 50 mph.
The ISSUE is half of Houston has no fking idea where they're going.. Ive seen plenty of slow ppl chase an exit 3-4 lanes away or last second lane change. PAY TF ATTENTION. How can you be driving and not know what lane you have to be in?
an article I saw which was written by a lawyer, said this - - -"I stopped using my phone on the road when I discovered myself driving after hanging up and having no idea where I was"!
I wish people would stop suddenly getting in front of these large vehicles. Really anybody, but more chance of accidents like this when it’s involving large vehicles. Sending good thoughts to loved ones of the person who died.
Not just large, but HEAVY! Cars seem to think it's fun to swerve around and do stupid things around heavy trucks. If you need to stay left because of potential merging traffic, people in cars get wild like you just ruined their life!
@@michiganstadThen you will never get anything delivered. Usually someone in a car or smaller truck cuts off a semi causing an accident. I believe that's what happened in this case. Respect the power of big rigs and the fact they can't stop that quickly.
Speed limiters will just cause cars to be stuck behind us, growing impatient and more reckless. I like being able to run. Gets the stuff there faster and keeps me out of everyone’s way
I actually responded to almost the exact same thing on I-75 south of Cincinnati. Truck blew a tire on the trailer causing the bulldozer to shift and slide off the trainer and onto the interstate. The truck and trailer spun. The driver was able to make it onto the shoulder, ran back out on the interstate and pulled the bulldozer to the left shoulder No injuries. Miracle.
The truck was probably equipped with more than enough video evidence, I know most all of them are now days. I drove for 30 years and for the last 10 mine had cameras all over it as well as in the cab to show driver's reaction time and how well they handled the situation. Cameras have saved trucking companies millions of dollars in lawsuits having that evidence, video doesn't lie!!
Yup.. funny how external forces can cause catastrophic results. Has nothing to do with securement and everything to do with outside force being applied by moron drivers.
I'm a retired super loads driver..48 years..150k lbs plus...you never leave your lane...once you swerve with weight...you will never get it back...if you chain the load properly...it will not come off...even if the truck turns over...the load will bend and warp the trailer ...but it will still be attached
Car drivers are clueless to heavy equipment loads and 18 wheelers. Horrible and tragic yet preventable...accident. one day accident won't be the appropriate word to use.
Years behind the wheel has taught me that if you are going to be the cause of an accident, I will put my life ahead of yours and stay the course. I'll pray you don't have any passengers. Because the one at fault will never stick around and say I'm sorry for causing this mess.
I somehow believe that they are going after the truckdriver in this incident. My thoughts are the truck driver was either new & unexperienced at hauling heavy equipment or just did not care. I've drove semi's for almost 30 years & can tell you this. You must always be prepared for the unexpected. Know that folks are going to get in your way & plan for it before it turns into a last minute cutoff. Years ago as a flatbed driver based out of Southern WI., all my loads went down thru Milwaukee & Chicago. This meant heavy metro traffic for hours sometimes which means lots of congested traffic with lots of stops & goes. Driving my semi loaded with coils of steel, I learned to control my truck & my temper to allow me & everyone else to make it through the congested traffic unharmed & in 1 piece. Most of the times I rarely used the brakes. I could see stopped traffic in front of me & instead of flying up to it at 80-90 MPH like everybody else, I got off the gas & simply cruised up to the backup using my engine brake & transmission to help slow me down which usually meant "No Hard Brakes". These were controlled slow downs & well prepared because by the time I got to the end of the backup, the traffic would start moving again, which meant that I really never had to come to a complete stop. Because I never did stop, neither did the folks behind me, & many folks got that figured out & were lined up. As far as deviating from your path, swerving goes, Sometimes I did have to make quick fancy swerving moves to avoid an incident, but I think I was going a lot slower than what others tend to do. I managed without hitting anyone or anyone hitting me. Just a thought.
This happens everywhere in this nation because of the unkind selfish self-centered behaviors behind the wheel!! GET A GRIP PEOPLE!!! START BEING KINDER AND REALIZE THERES OTHERS ON THE ROAD AND NOT JUST YOU!! IM a driver and I see these hurried selfish behaviors ALL day!🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
I see them too. Many of them are driving trucks, not all of them, but a lot of them. I have seen fuel tankers loaded with fuel, battling for position in the hammer lane, using his truck & trailer as a weapon. How dumb is that?
Drivers don’t realize that trailer truck have air breaks and it take longer to slow down the truck specially when they are full or hauling a heavy load
In Houston, people die every single day. You just can't plan on retirement or a long life -- if you live in our City. For me, I pray each day that God won't call me to Heaven from Road Rage.
Believe me it's all over the nation I'm a driver from my job and I see these people's haphazard selfish self-centered behaviors the way they drive they don't use their signals they pull right in front of you, they don't let you off the exits ect ect! Every now and then you'll get someone that's not rude and they'll let you get in to where you need to go but many people are rotten bad uncaring drivers! They take their character behind the wheel
Your one of the smart ones. Stay away from any type of heavy equipment being moved down the highway. Usually if you come up on a piece of construction equipment being moved, and a nice big rock fly's off & nails your chariot or windshield, it's going to be your insurance company who gets to fix it. You can try & whine to the company, but they are going to tell you next time keep your distance & these kinds of things won't happen.
@@philsmidwestclassiccars150 Good Tip. Thank You. I always want to know from the financial/insurance side of things that we don’t get to hear unless we are firsthand affected.
Drivers need to be taught when you pass a big rig and want to move over in front of the rig to make sure you see the full rig in your rear view mirror, there needs to be laws for this
No!! The Mazda driver will not be held accountable. He was driving a Mazda, so fact is he has no money. The truck driver will be held accountable because it was a bulldozer on his company's trailer that came off the trailer & crushed the Mustang driver. That's how it will look in the courts. The real reason why? Because the trucking company & its insurance have the deepest pockets. But you're not supposed to know that.
Bonus points for the news crew using the term bulldozer correctly. Normally they call any piece of heavy equipment a bulldozer but in this case they were right. Purely by accident I'm sure.
Houston has the worst drivers. I take my life in my hands each time i drive through there. They can’t just get in a lane & stay there, they have to always keep moving up, like it’s a damn game. 95% of the time i go through there is at least one wreck. Also, there needs to be MORE TROOPERS on the highway to ticket bad or speeding drivers! I never see them on the highway anymore.
Here's how I see it. A semi tractor pulling a trailer with an over-sized bull dozer on it is in the Fast Lane blocking cars behind it, a fustrated driver goes around it the semi truck pulling the trailer with the bull dozer on it and cuts it off causing the Semi Truck Driver to swerve into the center concrete center barrier and then the bull dozer comes off the trailer and falls into the path of the Mustang, killing the driver of the Mustang. Why is the Semi Trauck Driver in the Fast Lane pulling an Over-Sized Load, a Bull Dozer???
not a trucker but have friends and family that are. honestly i feel sorry for truckers because they get the raw deal for most stuff. tickets cost them more than for other people even if they're home and driving a car. i remember when a driver of a car fell asleep and drove under a fuel tanker and they blamed the trucker even though the car driver admitted it was his fault but his insurance wouldn't pay enough to have the bridge checked out so they tagged the trucker by the time it was proven it wasn't the truckers fault the insurance already lost the money to the state for checking the bridge. truckers would be willing to pay a little extra to drive on a interstate that only 18 wheelers can drive on. i see to many idiots cut in front of truckers and if the idiots looked in their rearview mirror they wouldn't even be able to see the truckers windows.
I just say 3 semis and a 4 wheeler have an accident here off I-10..I believe when passing by the State Trooper was doing a sobriety test on one of those drivers..
Generally speaking local construction companies do not use the proper amount of securement as would a long distance hauler would use . A John Deere 850L weighs between 47,500 to 51,300 pounds . Today all drivers should use vehicle dashboard cameras !
I seen a truck hauling a heavy machinery that the wheels on that machine had to make use off 4 side platforms coming out of the trailer because it was too wide. It was on Wednesday on the i95
The trailer didn't tip, it clipped an anchored jersey wall at highway speeds. A 50k bulldozer at 60mph has about 8million pounds of kinetic energy... so you would hypotheticaly need about 180 1/2" grade 70 chains and binders to secure that dozer under the assumption it doesn't rip the rails off the trailer.
Rookie truck driver. I am so sorry and my condolences to the Mustang driver and his family. This is such a senseless and totally preventable incident. Sad. 🙏
While driving always rehearse what to do if something crazy happens, I tell myself to get my head down if a wheel looks to be rolling my way, also I won't sit at a light for a long time, especially if no or light traffic as someone could come by at a high speed and hit me, I remember a young lady getting killed because she waited for the light to change at the top of a offramp from a freeway, always remember to watch your speed and look down the road.
From the convo, the next to left (fastest) lane apparently, and a Mazda swerved in front of them and the truck swerved to the left when the should have kept straight and wiped out the little car.
Notice several of the grouser pads are ripped off the right track, a normal place to attach chains when securing a dozer for transport. Depending on how fast the truck stopped when it hit the baricade, it would take a lot of chains to secure 50,000 plus pounds of dozer against a sudden complete stop. I agree with staying in your lane, someone wants to kill themselves doing something stupid in front of a truck, there is no reason for the driver to swerve and die with them. That is also the reason I quit driving over 30 years ago.
In 2024 theres still a massive delay in the news feed and the reporter is left nodding aimlessly waiting. No one in the news room can manage better timing?
just makes me think of final destination…. I try to avoid driving behind semi’s at all cost and also when i pass one, try to do it as quickly as possible…. not all truck drivers are crazy drivers, but stuff can happen that they have no control over…. thoughts and prayers to the deceased and all involved ❤️
See kids this is why having your load secured is important. As a heavy haul guy I over chain the shit out of everything idc what it is how big or small I use my 1/2 inch 3/4 or 7/8 chains most heavy haul guys just do minimum if it comes off your trailer it wasn’t secured properly end of story
Why do these horrible accidents keep happening? especially in states like Texas? The high speed limits!! Once you're going faster than 40-45 mph things get serious in an accident It doesn't matter how long you have been driving or if you think your skills are better than Mario Andretti. Anyone old enough to remember when the national speed limit was 55 we didn't have nearly as many deaths by accident like today, some states had/have lower speed limits for trucks over a certain weight, I know truck drivers hate/hated that! Im a retired Wrecker Driver I've cleaned up more Semi wrecks than I can remember (some I don't want to remember) when the speed limits went up we got really busy not in a Good way either! The carnage was much worse took more man power, more equipment, to clean up . Slowing down a little won't make that much of a difference in time but you will more likely make it to your destination with all your parts still where you were born with then
Why would you swerve with an extremely heavy load though? I would have just try to stop, but not suddenly. I feel that if you are a truck driver hauling heavy loads, you need to keep conscious of the load you carrying, so that you won't overreact in certain situations.
Pay attn to what happened the maxda that swerved in front of the truck was struck by the truck causing the truck to crash into the barrier . For some reson the media cant word things properly
