In this video, I show how to remove an old 8 HP Briggs and Stratton pull start engine (engine number 190702-2190-01) from a 1985 Snapper rear riding mower. (model 28085) Then I show how to install a brand new 17.5 HP electric start engine. It's a Briggs and Stratton Vertical 17.5 HP 500cc INTEK Engine with a 3amp Charging alternator and a 1" x 3-5/32 shaft that I bought on Amazon for a really good price. Engine number (31R977-0043-G1). Next, I show how to rewire a riding mower from scratch. In order to rewire an electric start mower I first had to buy and install a new Solenoid so I went with the Prime Line 7-01861-1. I also had to buy a new ignition switch since the old one did not have enough poles. I went with a 4 position (mower in reverse) 7 Terminal HD starter ignition switch module. The part numbers keep changing so just get a switch with enough terminals. It's also important to get the correct wires. The wires that connect to a battery are a heavy gage wire. I got mine off an old riding mower. You can pick some up at any tractor scrap yard or any auto parts store. I also bought some wire. I chose NAPA 785740 Multi Conductor Primary Wire since it's a 16 gage with many colors so I would not get confused. I also picked up some wire connectors from Napa (784351). I bough ground wire too from Napa (785505). I also got an inline fuse holder for safety (Napa 7823126) and a Bussmann 30 amp fuse. (Napa 782-2021) You should also pick up some electric tape and some wire caps. Next I show how to wire safety switches on a riding mower. I show how to wire the safety seat switch that turns the engine off when you get off of the tractor seat. Again, I got mine off an old mower but you can buy them from any tractor repair store or riding mower store. One wire goes to the magneto and the other goes to ground. Last I show how to install a new Briggs Muffler. (Briggs and Stratton 796000). This is the hard part. The muffler does not come with the bolts you need so I used a stainless steel socket cap screw with coarse thread 5/16-18 x 3/4 long with button heads. I also picked up a socket that fit it. (Husky 3/16 hex bit socket 3/8 drive. You have to get the exact bolts I recommend because there is not enough room between the muffler and the engine to use anything else. I was able to tighten the exhaust using this system. Since the muffler nearly hits the grass catcher bag I had to extend the grass bag away from the muffler using nuts and bolts. I also made my own heat shield from diamond sheet metal. I went with M-D building products internet #301173487. I have been running this riding mower for over a year now and everything works great. I have not had any issues with the grass catcher getting too hot. The engine starts right up. It sure beats pulling a cord over and over. It's also safer because you can start the engine while sitting down rather than pulling a cord and jumping on. One time I pulled the cord and forgot the mower was in gear and I had to chase it! Anyway I hope you enjoy this video. If you have any questions just ask in the comments section below and thanks for watching!

I'm just removing my 8 hp engine to clean up years of oil that mixed with dirt looks like grease.

Nice! If the engine has oil and good compression it can go a long time as long as the carb and filters are clean and it has fresh fuel. Old gas can make them act up a bit.

My snapper has a 12.5 hp Honda whisper quiet motor. I ride wheelies pretty often on it when not even trying. I bought it that way for $75 lol

I'm stunned you wanted to put double the HP engine on that little Snapper. I bet it pops wheelies really easily now. :) I changed out my dead BS engine in the 90s with a Tecumseh 8 HP with charging ability and battery. The engine cost about $280 from Northern Supply shipped to my door. Still runs well, but I noticed today it doesn't put out any voltage from Magneto anymore. Oh well. I plan to just start it, and when I'm done with my 30 minute cutting, keep a trickle charger that I have in my shed, hooked up to the battery for the next start. Easier to do that than to replace the magneto or the engine. The thing I don't like about the old Snapper, which has a more angular looking cutting platform than the round one on yours, is that they don't have any rear guide wheels so a fast turn can gouge the lawn. Or even a divot in the ground if the rear tire drops can shave. So I may add some guide casters myself onto it.

Those magneto wires sometimes are wired with strange colors. Like black wires being positive and the colorful lighter colored wires are negative for some reason. I'd check that first. If you pop off the engine cover find the magneto and trace the wires and test them with a meter and you will know for sure. There are a few videos that show how to test magnetos with a cheap meter. I bought one on Amazon and found out my one magneto was bad so I replaced it. Magneto's are not much money to replace. I agree with the poor turning / cutting at times. I think I need a new blade.

This is a very informative video. The more I learn about Snapper mowers the more novel I find them. They are very simple machines but seem to be very durable. They can also be repaired with common tools and parts seem to be available. I am looking at one with an 8 horsepower engine, twenty-eight inch mower deck with a steering wheel. I have no idea how old it is. Would like to find a bagger attachment but they seem a bit hard to find and expensive.; I can only suppose that the wiring would be similar for any electric-start Briggs & Stratton engine. The only improvement would be an actual wiring diagram but your use of arrows was quite helpful.
@RayStein
@RayStein 3 месяца назад
I saw a guy that bought an old one from the 80's with a damaged bagger and he replaced the bag with a large rubbermaid bin. The chute part would be really hard to recreate though. The wiring is pretty much the same on Briggs engines and yes those Snappers last as long as you want them to.

Hi. I have an old Craftsman 8HP back engine mower (similar to this Snapper). During start-up, fuel is coming out of the muffler actually causing a fire. Any idea what causes that and how I can fix it?
@RayStein
@RayStein 2 года назад
Yes. It happened to me and it turned out I needed a new carburetor because the fuel would not shut off ever. It can also mean you need a valve job. If I was in your position with all of my experience I would buy a used engine that works from a lawn mower scrap yard or if you have the money and love the tractor do what I did and put on a brand new electric start engine that fits. I love my old Snapper because it is built like a tank. These new riding mowers are junk in my opinion.

I tried rebuilding my engine first but it didn't pan out so I end up buying a new engine. I used that Snapper yesterday. It cuts way better than my new riding mowers which are scrap the day you buy them in my opinion.

WARNING: One thing you WILL have to keep a watch on with that engine that you didn't with the original engine is the new engine is OHV, so you WILL have to adjust the vales on it whereas on the original you didn't, adjusting them depends on about how many hours you have on the engine, figure how how many hours you cut in a week month & whole season, I cut 15 acres each week during the season so I have mine adjusted at the beginning or end of season, if all you cut is the area you showed you may be able to go for a couple of years, if it ever get to where it doesn't want to crank like the battery is dead then adjust them

Nice! I've had to rewire quite a few times. Those safety switches can sometimes cause trouble. One time a mouse chewed my wires. I even had a magneto's go bad. Check for compression before doing anything. One time a bad piston was acting like an electrical problem for me.

Yes. If you enjoy doing mechanical repairs there is no limit to what you can do. It's mostly about research and perseverance when you run into road blocks which happen to me all the time and every repair is unique to your specific tractor. One time I had a rusted bolt that just didn't want to come out so I researched what to do and was patient with it. I eventually got it apart but it took a long time. It also helps to have another person. I have my wife help with lifting tractor engines because they are a bit heavy and awkward to move around.

LOL! I actually did pop a few unintentional wheelies on a hillside that scared the life out of me. I try to respect the power because it's twice as powerful as the old engine. You should see the looks on neighbor's faces when they see it. lol

Thanks so much for posting this video. My Snapper currently has an 11.5hp rope start B&S engine and I want to upgrade to electric start. This video is exactly what I needed! My 11.5hp engine looks very much like the 17.5hp in this video and it has a curved muffler pipe that shoots out the side instead of the back so it doesn’t interfere with the bagger. I believe it will work on your engine too. It’s Snapper part # 7-4453
@RayStein

Thanks! I'll save the part #. Those Snapper Riding mowers are fun to work on.

@@RayStein I ended up buying a 17.5hp B&S engine for my 2004 Snapper rear engine rider since it was only $30 more than the 11.5hp replacement engine. I can confirm that muffler # 7-4453 fits on the 17.5hp engine with plenty of clearance to the rear bar without any modifications.

OK. Good idea. I will say the Snapper with the bigger engine has the most powerful mower deck I've ever driven. I've driven big commercial tractors too. Pound for pound that Snapper is the most powerful. It's just really small with a tiny cutting path so I only use it in small yards.

Great vid Ray! I am rebuilding a snapper from 2 years outside. New solenoid, starter, new wiring and switch just to name a few. I keep blowing fuses...... I can not find the short.....any suggestions?
@RayStein
@RayStein 3 года назад
That's awesome that you are taking on the project! The first thing to check is the fuse strength, (use 20 to 30 amp) Second, look for a thin wire. Thin wire gages will blow a fuse. Heavier gages will avoid that. Third, make sure your wire is copper inside and not silver. Last, I'd double check for loose connections and make sure something is not wired in the wrong spot.

Why did you change the motor
@RayStein
@RayStein 2 года назад
It had a pull start. I forgot it was in 3rd gear and it drove off without me and I had to chase it. I got on and stopped it before it did any major damage but that was it for me. Plus pulling a cord is terrible on those days where it wouldn't start.
