This is a video to introduce the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary (or just Little Office). I give some detail about the history and evolution and briefly show you what's inside.
If you prefer to dive right in without a history lesson, skip this video and go right to the "Performing" video which should be next in the playlist.
Please note that most of what I said in this video came from a website/forum that I lost the link to.. so if you do find the text, please send me a link so I can properly accredit the original author!

Wonderful! Thank you for this! I was just trying to find out how to pray the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and was surprised and happy to find this video - by a fellow parishioner.

That was very insightful. I loved hearing the history, since I have both the Little Office, as well as Shorter Christian prayer. I guess I have been on the right track all along. You just helped me clarify the how, when, and why. Thank you.

As I was looking on eBay for a copy of the little office of the Blessed Virgin Mary book there is one selling both the little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary and shorter Christian prayers together for 20 bucks that was a perfect combination one for daily praying and reading and the other for holy days of obligation

Hi, thanks for the video. Please note, that the invitatory does not need to be said if Morning Prayer is the first Office recited in the day. See General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours (GILH) number 35: 'The invitatory should begin the whole sequence of daily prayer; thus it begins Lauds or the Office of Readings depending on which of these liturgical actions begins the day. If so desired, however, the psalm with its antiphon may be omitted when it comes before Lauds.'

Now ya need to get the Baronius press Traditional Office in Latin and English After praying the LOTH for 40 years I switched and the Traditional office is amazing!! Their Little Office of the BVM is fabulous!

Here in the UK we have a different English version of LOTHs approved for UK, Australia, NZ and other English speaking countries than yours in US. You have 4 volumes and we have 3 bricks! Since Vat 2 we haven't got an official UK Little Office. There was a Carmelite version printed in 75 published by the order here in England but long out of print. I would love an official UK Little Office but we are recommend to stick with the LOTHs. Of course as lay people we aren't obliged so could use your USA Little office. Greetings from the other side of the pond!

Have you looked Into the Divine Office (Common Wealth edition) from the Personal Ordinariates? It’s a 1 book version of the Anglican Divine Office. It is approved by the Catholic Church. I really like it because you don’t have 3 volumes, it has the major hours and lesser hours and the entire proper of saints. Plus the Anglican tradition has longer scripture readings with their major hours.

It was also radically changed in format during Vatican 2 (the modern version in this video ) - I have the older traditional Catholic version of the Little Divine Office before Vatican 2 (Baronius Press version available on Amazon )

thanks for this comment, just bought a scapular and I'm trying to find which prayers are said to wear it daily. Many things seem to have changed post Vatican 2 . I didn't know this one changed too
@duromusabc
@duromusabc 3 года назад
Spartan Elf yes even the Little Divine Office was significantly changed because of Vatican 2 (along with the Divine Office aka Breviary and even the English translation of the Catholic Bible itself )

@@duromusabc oh boy now I'll have to get hold of a pre vatican 2 Bible? At this rate I won't be surprised to find out that Our Lord's Name was Emanuel originally lol! anyway it's good to learn about these things

Spartan Elf yes- you have to get the pre Vatican 2 Catholic bible called the Duoay Rheims Bible online from either Amazon or Baronius Press

It seems that the Invitatory is kept before the Office of Readings just like it is in the full Office. But then again to your point there is no "Lord, open my lips..." to guide the reader to the actual invitatory on the Morning Prayer pages.

You're right, clear as mud. However, will persevere with both, and thank you. I shall just repeat the videos, and hopefully it will sink in.

Hi, I have a question, should I kneel when reciting Little Office?
@cmcnicholas

That's more of a personal choice. Any attitude of respect/reverence should be shown.. that's it!

You can get the 1962 Divine Office from Angelus press, high quality gilded 2 tome edition, I think is Latin only though.

It omits three: "Three psalms (58, 83, and 109) have been omitted from the psalter cycle because of their curses; in the same way, some verses have been omitted from certain psalms, as noted at the head of each. The reason for the omission is a certain psychological difficulty, even though the psalms of imprecation are in fact used as prayer in the New Testament, for example, Rv 6:10, and in no sense to encourage the use of curses."

@@cmcnicholasthat's why I wouldn't bother with the post 62 Liturgy of the hours. Instead, I would use the traditional Breviary. It doesn't so much matter with the Little Office as that devotion is specifically with Our Lady. And I have noticed that, likenthe Breviary, it includes in most versions all the hours unlike the modern Liturgy. I believe the Monastic Diurnal is worthy too, and also easier for lay people to keep up with the routine better than the official hours.

Ignore Vat II: brown scapular, devotion to Immaculate Heart of Mary, Saturdays especially, and Office of Blessed Virgin are last gifts for world, at Fatima, per Sr Lucia of Fatima.

We cannot ignore a papal approved council of any sort. If you prefer some of the pre-VII devotions than go for it; but that does not dismiss the beauty of the reformed prayers. The bishops were led by the Holy Ghost to make these reforms. Is all of it perfect? No. But it never is. It is a work in progress, but it has great value. The brown scapular, the five first Saturdays, and the majority of devotions have not been changed in the slightest and are still done today. There are of course bad actors who try and rupture the Church under the guise of reform, but such people ignore the actual rubrics and have not and will not succeed. But accusing the Church of having a bad council when it was approved by the magisterium is accusing Christ's promise of protecting His Church from being conquered as a falsehood.

This was so lacklustre compared to my expectations, I gave up at 9:39. I hoped for more reputable information than what is easily accessible on Wikipedia. Where’s the appreciation for the history of the Book of Psalms from the time it was written until the publication of this video?

Where's your practice of charity? I'd say that's a much greater priority for a Christian than scholarship or encyclopaedic knowledge.

Doesn't seem like you paid attention during those nine minutes, considering that the video was not about the Book of Psalms. Where's your appreciation for a good Catholic trying to help people pray more?
