#1 Mistake You Make Growing St Augustine Grass 

The biggest mistake is caring too much. I've learned over the past year that the best thing you can do is 1. Mow the lawn 2 times per week at the highest setting and fertilize twice a year. Any well balanced fertilizer will work. Also water 2 times per week. Anything else is searching for perfection which is pointless. A few weeds in the lawn isn't a big deal.

Very good info. My father was a master at maintaining st Augustine grass. He was mowing every single weekend and watering every day being we live in south Texas. He told me the same exact things you said.

I'm in the middle of a lawn rehab here in Tampa and I'm gonna need all the advice I can get. It started as almost 40% clover and it's probably 10% but I have patches missing. This is going to be quite the process

I just bought a home in NW FL with 0.67 acres of St Augustine and other grasses. Since I have been watering twice per week, fertilizing, mowing and removing oak leaves (mulching now) the St Augustine has really turned around and has started really filling in. I can tell now that the grass was really starving for nutrition. St Augustine is really pretty, and I love it. I moved from the north and have been dealing with Tall Fescue and hard clay there. Thanks for the videos they are really helping me get up to speed in caring for this type of grass. I am trying the runners soaked in water soon though I have had some success just sticking them into the ground and keeping the runners wet. I also have a plugger I am using that's working to help fill in bare spots.

I use to have tall fescue when I dug up my lawn back in 2012 and it didn't take well. I mowed at the right height and watered well but it just didn't work. My sister recommended I plant st augustine because we had it in the backyard and hasn't had any problems since being put in since 86'. So I've converted my front lawn to st augustine and it's doing well!! I love in southern California.Growing quickly,sending runners, and a lovely green color. I mow mine between 3-4 inches and have 1 more section of the yard to complete.

I agree, the key to healthy St Augustine is to water on a schedule that changes as it gets hotter, for me Spring is once a week while in the summer its twice a week so you can imagine my summer water bill. Second the cut is as needed Spring into early summer I cut every 3 to 4 days as it gets hotter I get closer to once a week. Early spring I use a high quality weed and feed, around mid May I put down a slow release organic fertilizer either heavy Milo or Medina. Also you want to read your lawn and make sure you don't cut it to low in the spring because its cooler and I'm treating for and pulling weeds cut at about 2 to 3 inches In May I go up to 4. You have to be careful of Fungus and treat early. I have had Brown Patch for years so by treating it year round it only shows up late fall.

With my home purchase in December, I inherited freshly sodded St Aug in my backyard. My wife thinks I'm crazy because I'm out back watering and mowing and trimming and fertilizing and pulling stuff all the time. It's still tough to keep it 100% to my liking.

That’s so true , it does take effort and time. I cut it on the highest level my lawnmower goes and cut it like every nine days and water my lawn twice a week. I have a small patch of Bermuda grass growing and I’m debating whether to use my shovel and cut that piece out or just keep watering and cutting the grass till the st. Augustine takes over, what would I recommend. It about the size of the square of a st Augustine sod

Which weed and feed would you recommend for central Florida St. Augustine grass?

I watched the video on planting St. Augustine runners you did a couple of years ago. do you have to lay the runners in a shallow container of water, or can you just submerge them in something like a 5 gallon bucket?

I just bought some of this grass in a sod pod to grow on my toolbox at work. How often should I water it?

Thank you for the video. May I ask a question. I just lost part of my yard to Chinch bugs. I have prepared it and replaced with St. Augustine squares. We put down a pallet full. Now it seems to be going dormant. Is that normal?
