Man I remember listening to this podcast way back in 2024. Crazy to compare what your saying now to what the actual game has become. We never knew just how good it was going to be. Can't believe how well Riot actually pulled it off !
I think the riot devs were talking about introducing mega-servers like gw2 does. So instead of dividing players into server, the whole game is one big server and each map generates different instances depending on how many players are present. If there aren't enough players then it shuts those instances, and then if you have friends you can join their instance. I think that would be a good idea.
My ideal riot mmo would be an mmo that's centered around actively exploring the world and seeking out champions to learn under them. I like the idea of champions being something like mentors for different players. And every player's skillsets, spells, and equipment are essentially a mish-mash of different champion abilities
I've played Guild Wars 2 for a bit and the way they handle horizontal progression is that once you hit lvl 60 and do the endgame dungeons and world events, the gear you get from those are the best gear you can get (kinda). Which is cool on one hand but I stopped playing because I didn't feel like I was progressing, why should I do the new stuff when there's no incentive other than story. Theres a lot of things in GW2 like environmental unlocks, mounts, subclasses etc but to me those don't make me want to progress. I do love the mounts though, I think GW2 mounts is the best mount system in an MMO and they make flying super fun
