I come from an olive oil producing family. Figuring out the quality of your olive oil is very important. Greek olive oils are some of the best in the world. Most Greek olive oil is purchased by Italy and Spain to mix with their lesser quality olive oils that these nations produce. Or they tend to sell as "Italian" etc. Many olive oil brands are also diluted with "other oils" making higher profit margins for companies. Avoid olive oils in dark green coloured bottles....excellent olive oil should be dark green by nature.

I was born in the region of Calabria in southern Italy, I know very well how olive oil should taste. We in the family owned many olive trees, and I and all my siblings took part in gathering the fruit, taken to the mill, and even watched when the oil was extracted. Of course olive oils do not taste all the same, all the regions of the peninsula produce oil including the inlands of Sardinia and Sicily. Most the oils in all the regions are made with many different kinds of olives, and this make the oils taste different but equally delicious.
@@christy7344 it depends on the region, the type of olives, and the type of soil. I know where I came from it moe greenish, Sicily and Sardinia could be some of the same olive 🫒 and some different which the oil could be more golden. Remember of all the peninsula making oils, they taste different, and look different but equally delicious.
I drank olive oil for a month to fight skin problems I had and you wouldn't believe the compliments I received from others telling me how beautiful and glowing my skin was. There are many many other benefits as well for internal organs. My source is Kirkland olive oil from Costco from Italy only.
@aulakhk16 I did a small espresso cup, squeezed 1oz of lemon at the bottom(helps with the bitterness of oil taste) and 2oz of olive oil on top and took it as a shot on am empty stomach either first thing in a.m and also last thing in p.m
@@TheDannyVG Did the Kirkland olive oil pass the test? That Dr M is referring to in this video? I’m so curious! And thank you for sharing your experience with olive oil for your skin !!
Always be careful when purchasing olive oil. Make sure to look for "Italy" only. Many brands even Kirkland has some that specify it is from Italy, Spain, Greece, Etc. I ONLY buy Kirkland Italy only, no blends of olives just one source. It is also one of the only Bobby Approved olive oils. Check him out and follow him if you have not yet.@@kyleneanderson6250
Olive oil should be used in the first year after pressing. The taste varies depending on weather conditions and the time the olives have been harvested. Some places harvest them very early and the olives and oil are green, the taste is fruity with a "bite" in the throat and the acidity low. That is the best oil for health. Other places prefer to let the olives mature and they turn to light brown and the oil is yellow and more sweet with higher acidity. Acidity should be written on the bottle and should not be more than 1% for extra virgin and it depends on the weather through the whole year and the time of harvesting. Oil from hills and mountains is in general of superior quality than that from valleys. Extra virgin oil is sometimes mixed with cheap refined olive oil that still freezes so the freezer test is not that accurate. Never buy in plastic bottles, metal also not that good
@@ananke2104 You can not test it at home unfortunately. You need to send a sample to a lab. Even producers have to send a sample to determine the acidity of the production. In very few countries the acidity has to be written on the bottle by law, then you more or less know what you get, at least in that respect, but in most countries it is not written. Still acidity is not the only factor for quality but it is important that it is low for health. The best judge for quality at home is taste, but you need to develop it by using high quality from a local producer that you know and trust. The very best is light green and cloudy with a very fruity taste and low acidity. After three months of the pressing date the particles of the olives that make it cloudy are settling to the bottom and are oxidised and that rises acidity too.
@@christy7344 I do not live in the US, I would not know. But even in countries that produce lots of good olive oil like Spain and Italy, nothing in the supermarket comes even close to what you can get from a local producer who produce first and formost for their own families. Try to get local oils if you can
Good job, doctor! As an olive oil producer, I will just add a few info. The “refrigerator” test is not always accurate, but if you want to do this test on extra virgin olive oil, do it in small quantities. Not all over the bottle because the bonds of fatty and phenolic substances break down during thawing, resulting in a lower quality oil. The optimal extra virgin olive oil storage is between 12 and 22 degrees Celsius. It is essential to underline that once the bottle is opened, it must be consumed within approximately 15 days. Extra virgin olive oil fears both exposure to air and light.
@@cindy9155 hello Cindy, I have a small farm in Tuscany. Name is "Podere Panta Rei". We are nearly out of stock with olive oil, but the next harvest should be a good one.
Thank you! I just checked and my olive oil comes in dark glass, has the country of origin, harvest date, production date and expiration date and it's first cold pressed. Excellent!
What is the best olive oil we can buy or use thanks for teaching some of us we use olive oil l be careful to look the type to buy next time have a blessed day doctor
My brother has a small farm in southern spain with a few olive ,last year I had a bottle of the first pressing, never tasted anything like it..amazing..
I'm 73. Every morning I eat a huge family size salad with about 20 vegetables with Organic extra virgin olive oil and organic apple cider vinegar with my own blend of spices that I put together. Last time I had a health checkup was in the 1970s. I exercise regularly but moderately without overdoing it. I'm a cyclist I don't have a car so that keeps me in shape and I spent most of my life as a carpenter. I'm the same weight now that I was in my twenties. I don't even bother to renew my health card cuz I've never really used it.
Thank You for the great info. A friend brought me olive oil and olives from family in Greece. I put the olives in the fridge and the oil thickened and turned almost solid. Now i know it is pure.
My daughter was just in Morocco and she brought me home a marvelous bottle of green mud, no I meant olive oil. The writing is all in Arabic so don’t ask me what it says. Best stuff I’ve ever had. I’m going to cry when the bottle is empty 😢
Thank you Dr Mandell, you are the best in providing vital information to us the ordinary folk in the manner we understand. Truly blessed to learn so much from you. God bless.
I have been using Simply Nature brand organic evoo sold by Aldi, from Tunisia. it passes all the tests, has an expiration date and a certification #. It is however pretty cheap, six dollars for a 16.9 oz bottle. One benefit I've experienced after taking 2 tablespoons before going to bed, is a great nights sleep, hoping that over the long term it will help my arthritis.
I saw a study that said that they tasted most of the major over the counter brands of extra virgin olive oil and found that none of them except for one was actually extra virgin olive oil. The one that they tested that they said is actually meets the European rating to be extra virgin olive oil was the Kirkland extra virgin olive oil sold by Costco I think Sam's might also have it. This is what my wife buys. Thank you 👍
@@jamessimon7754 mixed or not it past the study to qualify for European olive oil which has a minimum polyphenol. I can't remember what the number is but it was the only over the counter that passed.
Thank you! I have read that Spanish olive is the best because it is pure. I will go check. I bought an olive oil and avocado oil mix, now I need to look again 🌸 HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY!
I get Spanish olive oil from Costco. I like the flavor and the 'bite' it has. I figured that a company like Costco wouldn't want to damage their reputation by selling fake olive oil.
@@justpitiful6339 usually that means it's a mixture of oils, make sure u read ingredients & if it came from more than one place of origin which is usually a mix of oils, also if it doesn't solidify in frig overnight its not authentic olive oil
@@justpitiful6339Did you take it by the spoonful? If you had it with food you probably won't feel the burning. If you take a nice big spoonful of it and just swallow it, that's when you should feel it. I bought one with a nice color and it burns my throat but didn't solidify, so who knows if it's a good one.
As a rule of thumb, don’t buy any olive oil that doesn’t have an expiration date. When you find one that has it, be sure it is good at least for more than one year from the date you purchase it. European Olive Oils also can be labeled DOP (red sticker) or IGP (blue sticker) and these labels are given only to high quality olive oils. Some of the red sticker oils (DOP) also have the “vintage” printed on the label. As of now (9/23) look for 2022 harvest, since 2023 harvest is just happening now. Last thing: when you buy good olive oil, use it! Don’t keep it open for months. Open it and use it in a couple of weeks max. It starts to degrade immediately after pressing, if you expose it to oxidation it won’t last more than two weeks tops.
@@kirstenmassa4110 expiration date tells you at least when it was bottled. I get it that it means nothing but in absence of any other indicator about when it started its life, at least it gives you that.
@@kirstenmassa4110 since the maximum is two years, if you see a bottle with 2025 expiration date, it means it was bottled in 2023 which in turns it tells you that at best it could be a 2022 harvest. But it is not a precise date. it’s just a reference point. Higher quality/higher price also is not always true, just a reference point. The day that, whoever sets the rules, does it with the consumer in mind, it will be different. Now that the rules are made by corporations, we have to help ourselves with reference points.
Million thanks Dr. Mandell. I had questions about the extra virgin oil I use. Now I put it in the refrigerator and I will know for sure, tomorrow. Your lesson came at the perfect moment.
Thanks Doctor Mandell. Appreciate what you do for the community and for the people. I show my appreciation and gratitude towards your work. Much appreciated in what you practice and provide.

The California EVOO is good olive oil. Put it in the fridge and it solidified and became cloudy. Sams Club used to carry this brand, but they don't anymore.
Thanks Dr. Mandell! My favorite olive oil 🫒 is california Ranch, but I've also had great luck and flavor with an olive 🫒 oil from Costco labeled Kirkland 100% california extra virgin o.o., going for $10.99 per 33.8 Oz/1-liter. Also, I store my unopened bottles of olive 🫒 oil in the refrigerator (obviously the bottle I'm using is not stored in the fridge) and I once used a bottle of california Ranch that had been in the fridge, solidified, for at least 4 years, and it tasted great still. But I can also attest to olive oil going rancid over time. Also look for Evo from a single source, not multiple countries.
We make our own Olive Oil and we do it by Cold Press. To test Pure Olive Oil without testing the whole bottle etc - Take a clean glass container pour in a few tablespoons or more of olive oil cover with a lid and refrigerate for at least a day or overnight. If the oil solidifies it shows that the oil has monounsaturated pure olive oil whereas adulterated or fake olive oil will not change its texture on refrigerating.
It reminds me of the taste of under-ripe/green bananas. And it grows on you quick. I finally understood why people drizzle it on absolutely everything even icecream
@@markroberts7001 I drizzle it on top of everything salty; I have yet to try it with ice cream, though the idea isn't palatable, but it won't hurt to find out.
@@yardleyj9391 I saw Action Bronson do it on his show called the untitled action Bronson show. I think it was vanilla ice cream with black truffles and olive oil
Thanks for that advice! I use Mena olive oil. It is single source & has on bottle where in the orchard the oil came from, & of course the expiry date. I'd never before had the slight peppery taste @ back of throat before, before tasting Mena. Don't let the description of the pepper taste put you off as it is only slight & when you cook with it, that peppery taste is not present, so don't let that put you off. The only thing I DO NOT like is that it is sold in plastic bottles. I think that's how they keep their costs down...& of course less breakage possibilities in shipping because Mena olive oil comes from the Motherland, primo land of Morrocco! That's what I hear is the best place to get your olive oil. According to Dr. Gundry Moroccan olive oil has the high levels of that ingredient (can't remember what it's called, but Moroccan olive oil has the highest levels out there)...but what led me to Mena olive oil was because I COULDN'T AFFORD Dr. Gundry's olive oil. I can tell Mena olive oil is quality, but yet AFFORDABLE. I was ordering Mena online, but I about fell out when I saw it @ Publix grocery store. That's where I get it now, & it's very affordable.
I only use Sicilian olive oil. Sicily still maintains strict supervision of their industry. I just checked my Paisano olive oil (in glass bottle) and performed the test you suggested. I must say it passed. Thank you for the video.
Another great video. The mixing of other oils was the best tip I heard in awhile. I'm happy to say my extra virgin olive oil choice past your test on all points from this video. Thank you Doctor.
You should also buy EVOO from a single source. In California we have it made with a huge olive oil industry and buying 100% California grown and pressed is easy. Plus living close to the source and the fact California(at least my source of OO)places the squeeze date so you can buy it as fresh as possible, which is also important.
The grocer told us that Pomace was better for cooking and extra virgin was good for salads, etc. Could you, please tell me what is the difference? Both are of the same make and imported. Thanks for all the info/ trouble you go through for your viewers. Highly appreciated.
“... Virgin olive oils are produced using physical methods only - usually spinning in a centrifuge or squeezing in a press. There's nothing added in the process and no chemicals are used to draw the oil out. Olive Pomace Oil, in comparison, uses a solvent, typically hexane, to draw the oil out of the dry pomace". (Google) Pomace is also the residue from the first pressing.
Never use pomace / you may search about it and you will notice how harmful it is for your health. Extra virgin olive oil can be used for cooking and also law temp frying.
Love THIS! Indeed, just started a day ago and will be using Olive Oil daily going forward with my life. Very much appreciate your genuine expressions and information, sir. 🌱
Great advice. I will only buy extra virgin olive 🫒 oil in dark glass containers. A number of years ago there were reports that some olive oils marketed as premium were, in fact, not.
I have my own farm olive/olive oil , I am not mixing varieties to test them in lab separately. I know the polyphenol/ acidity/ proxied levels (pulse other parameters). Really after researches me, family and friend found the benefits of this golden oil after one year of diet based on extra virgin early harvest, cold pressed olive oil.
The very best cold pressed organic olive oil with the highest polyphenols comes from Morocco. It gives 400% - 500% more polyphenols than most other olive oil products.
I do buy Atlas Moroccan olive oil, and it’s a golden yellow color…one of my favs! I also like a greener olive oil from Greece by Ancient Foods called Keros! Fantastic oil!! 👍🏼
That’s good to know, I have been studying other types of oils like vegetable oil for an example and realizing it does more harm than to “taste” good because of the oxidation

just checked and both brands I currently have in my pantry are cold pressed 100% extra virgin olive oil. Borges is one brand and the other is woolworths countdown. Both are from spain. I wouldnt know what is considered cheap as food here in New Zealand is expensive due to the distance.
Also , putting into a glass with water and a few pieces of ice the diluted oils will break up into their constituent oils . You'll be able to see and taste the difference.
4:00 The label may say Extra Virgin but the ingredients will say “a blend of” olive oil. So they are taking about percentage of extra virgin versus percentage of chemically extracted oil.
I have never gotten really good olive oil since I lived in Sicily. I would watch the people knock the olives off the trees with a pole. I would get some of the first press from my landlord. It was peppery and grassy tasting, just amazing.
Thank you Dr. For sharing this important info with us. I've been kinda confused when it comes to knowing the best way to get the right one. Have a blessed and beautiful day🤗
Thank you. I purchased cold pressed olive oil today- origin of Italy- in a dark glass bottle. This week I began my new journey of organic & non GMO. It’s quite the puzzle ❤
Thanks for heads up about the refrigerator trick. I did not know that. I have some that is doing that but it doesn't have much of a grassy taste because I have had the good stuff before and there is big difference in taste. Thanks for your insight.
I have a tall bottle 1 L of extra-virgin olive oil, that is cold extracted and it’s imported from A. Genco. Superior quality olive oil, obtained directly from olives and solely by mechanical means. A blend of olive oil from Greece, Italy, and Spain.
Olive oil is mooth and sweet from the ripe olives picked right after they fall of the trees. I am in the olive country on th coast of Adriatic. The peppering taste us when olives sit in the bags and get inflamed and spoiled.
I was wondering also why many experts said good EV olive oil should taste peppery.I bought EVOO many bottles in Thailand..they all tasted peppery .I hated the taste. But I came to San Benedetto,Adriatic part in Italy and have bought Bio Extravergine olive oil many bottles already . They tasted smooth ,no peppery taste at all. Taking 2 spoons in the morning is something easy now.
Absolutely, I buy a Greek, organic evoo, that is made from unripe green olives, unfiltered, cold, first press, smooth creamy texture, not bitter or peppery, in a dark green glass bottle, the best I've had in my life, it's $45 for a 16oz bottle, worth every penny, Koroneiki olive variety, the variety of olives also determines whether an oil is bitter or peppery. Golden Olive Eleni
Has anyone ever tried Laudemio EVOO at $40 a bottle? My understanding is real true EVOO should be green & have a peppery burn after swallowing. Im going to hopefully try this brand and gift myself at the holidays 😊
Thank you. Letting us know to test its authenticity by putting it in the refrigerator is great information. Doctor, what are your thoughts about olive oil vs coconut oil? Would you consider making a video about it?
I hope I get where I like it, it’s not awful, but I had Italian Restaurant in Lexington Kentucky that served a crunchy bread with Olive Oil that had like tiny seeds in it to dip the bread, it was so good! I’m doing 2 tablespoons a day and that bang when it gets to back of your mouth always surprises me. But if Doc says it’s good for you I believe his word!
Olives need to be pressed within 6 hours of harvest. 1st cold pressed date on bottle. A blend of olive oils from different countries can be very deceiving in that you have no idea when they were harvested or pressed, shipped, handled etc. Great olive oil comes from harvesting and pressing quickly by responsible, ethical producers. They're out there. Trouble is finding and trusting their claims of producing a pure unadulterated product in this day and age can be a real challenge, especially with not much help from regulatory bodies........
Thank you, Dr. Mandel. I buy an EVOO imported from Spain. It's called (Vezorla) and I drink a shot glass with a half tsp of cayenne pepper. Twice daily
I think some peopl are confused about the "refrigerator" test, not freezer. The Dr saysgood evoo should thicken with possibly a little cloudiness at the bottom. Also I use my Evoo to Saute green veggies over a low flame, asparagus, broccoli and string beans. Delicious!
Oh my God thank you for that information. I’ve been buying a certain brand-name olive oil most of my life growing up and it was in a can. I guess I’ll have to change that. Thank you again and God bless, Idalia from Clearwater.
There is nothing wrong with buying the product in a can. The can keeps all the light out, so it is safe. Some of the best Virgin Olive Oils are sold in a can-container.
This didn’t tell me too much. So give us a few brands of what’s good. I’ve been doing the olive oil, lemon, honey and cayenne elixir but now it might not be any good? Is my cayenne any good?
