Build variety might be my favorite part of ER. After finishing the game using multiple different builds I went and played DS3 and essentially got throught the entire game with a Claymore that you can get at the beginning of the game. RoB is clearly the cursed katana they've been doing since forever (Hiltless, Chaos Blade, Chikage) and its description even says "a cursed weapon that has felled countless men" so it's odd that the price for its power isn't the user's HP especially considering that most blood skills reduce your HP. I think that alone would've been enough balance if the HP cost for using it's AoW was pricey.

I really appreciate mentioning build variety in Elden Ring - for me it's one of the main reasons why ER is my favorite and most replayable FromSoftware game. One thing that I'm kinda sad that wasn't mentioned is legacy dungeon design - for me they are best locations that FromSoft ever created and I never had that much fun while exploring locations like in them. I love especially Leyndell, that is probably not only my favorite location in these games, it's my favorite location in any game (It's basically perfect to me and even if it has some flaws they are minor to me).

@HeyTarnished
@HeyTarnished 9 месяцев назад
@@khaosinkorporated9493 Yeah Elden Ring seems to have caused a bit of a divide between the old Souls vets (I hate that name) & the ones that loved Bloodborne, Sekiro & kept an open-mind, it’s mostly due to how different it is (open-world design & new boss combat design which is an evolution from the previous Souls games), while both aspects have massively improved over the linear exploration with little to no branching paths (BB had some, I’m looking at you DS3), it made some of the old fanbase feel home sick a little, and decided to take the stuff that the game’s did really good as if it’s a bad thing, which is completely ridiculous, it is coming from that Joseph Anderson video for the most part, it inspired & misinformed a lot of people’s opinions in a really concerning way to where you just can’t have a single discussion about the game without someone criticizing it one way or another, it’s really upsetting, but it’s mostly in the comment sections, look at Ember, Prez, SmoughTown & many other RU-vid channels’ polls, you’ll see Elden Ring plowing through these votes winning almost all the time as the best Soulsborne game by far, most of the criticism coming to ER can be applied to other souls games and it’s ridiculous to see many people pointing them out while announcing their fave souls game is either BB or DS3, it’s so hypocritical. Put simply, Elden Ring has made very audacious game design efforts, and From Software has successfully achieved it in ways no other game developer can do, albeit with some mistakes here and there, it destroys the past Souls games in so many ways it’s not even funny, but at the same time, some older souls fans didn’t like some of the decisions it took which is to be expected because it’s a pretty big departure, and a departure that has (IMO) sullied the older Souls games, made them feel outdated.
@khaosinkorporated9493
@khaosinkorporated9493 9 месяцев назад
@@HeyTarnished I also feel like many of the complaints came from all the copy-pasting, which is fair. Also not all of the unique bosses were hits either. I always loved Elden Ring for the sheer creativity, the variety, and all the different and fun ways to play. Also, I can see what you mean by other FromSoft games feeling outdated by comparison, but honestly, I don’t mind. The original Spyro the Dragon games for example may feel outdated in terms of graphics and some of its controls, but they’re still good games. Dark Souls has some stuff that can be considered outdated but I still enjoy the game quite a lot. Elden Ring doesn’t ruin that. It takes a while to get used to each FromSoft title, that’s just part of their philosophy. If you play Elden Ring and then play Dark Souls, you’ll have to adapt to Dark Souls again. If you play Elden Ring after Dark Souls, you’ll have to get use to the Elden Ring controls again. These games just take a while to get used to, the more you play them, the more used to them you get, and often, the more you enjoy them. That’s just kinda the philosophy of these game’s design. I kinda went on a rant there, and what I’m saying may be a little scattershot, but I just thought since you gave such a detailed response I may as well do that too.

Thanks again.

I feel like Yorm could of been a better fight if they didn't give you the Storm Ruler at all the first time around, but instead made you fight "normally" but if you were struggling on him the game would give you a hint about Siegward. Letting you know he can be a great help to the fight and during the fight he would use Storm Ruler to break Yorm's stance, letting you get a damage window in. After the fight is over like it happens in game now, Siegward would give you his Storm Ruler for helping him on his quest, making NG+ playthroughs quicker and easier for a boss you've completed already. I know Siegward can disappear if you don't do his quest in a timely manner but you just negate it by removing the boss kill time window for him. Just my thoughts on it, he seems to be a big waste of potential for a Lord of Cinder.

I've made about 30 at this point, its one of the main things that keeps me playing, and at least 10% of my playtime has been spent at the mirror lmao. Also, the mirror! I can change my appearance anytime, and change my gender to make my voice better for my cosplays, for example, my Edward Elric cosplay is set to female since his voice is higher pitched than any of the male options. I don't have to restart a cosplay due to any little mistake, or to change the name, and I can make as many cosplays to switch between as I want within the limits of the 15 saved faces.

For the type of boss Yhorm is, there should've been a system to use the storm ruler outside of holding down a button. Say, Siegward isn't an optional summon, and the storm ruler is only used by him, so you have to distract Yhorm while Siegward charges attacks. Then, when you receive it after the fight, you can use it the same way as Siegward in NG+. Not only would I call this a better use of the storm ruler, it also gives incentive to play NG+.

@BertoPlease Now that I think about it, you could also just kill Siegward for it. That would work, too. His questline would need to change at some parts as well, like him being caged. If you were to free him from his prison, you would receive a reward, but if you miss him he'll just be around the boss fog, and when you go back to the cell, the door would be open with the key on the floor, adding a layer to his character. Siegward was able to escape the whole time, but upon nearing completion of his old friends wishes, he was getting cold feet and pretending he was trapped. Also, when killing Siegward, you instantly receive the storm ruler, but not the armor set. So, I guess the reward would simply be getting his armor set. This would also explain how giving back his armor gave him the strength to escape the well, he could've escaped the whole time, but the armor gave him the motivation to continue. Essentially, Siegward has cold feet all throughout his quest. HELL, if you enter the boss room after killing Siegward, wearing a piece of the set without Siegward present will cause Yhorm to jump into second phase, showing even in his state, Yhorm still has Siegward in his heart somewhere. And if that doesn't make sense, you wearing Siegwards armor could really only mean one thing. Idk, now I'm just shipping Yhorm and Siegward. Let's add a love triangle with Pontiff as well. Pontiff secretly had a crush on Yhorm, and upon killing Yhorm, you receive a jar full of Pontiffs...

I hate when people think nostalgia is a bad reason to like a game, playing a game isn’t just about having better mechanics and gameplay. The feeling you get from any game, whether it was when you were 8 or 28, is the only thing that matters. And if you enjoyed an older game because it made you happier at the time you should like it more than a game that is *objectively* better because to you, it doesn’t bring that same level of joy.

regarding the Invasions/PvP thing: I really liked Dark Souls 3 and it was my first time playing a Souls game, but the invaders were actually what kinda killed my enjoyment along the way. I'd find myself in a new area and boom, invaded and destroyed (cuz I didnt know what the heck i was doing) so I had to respawn and cancel out all the hard work I'd done to get where I was, only to be invaded again and kicked back. This would even happen during bosses; I got an invader who got into Wolnir's Boss Arena with me, and when Wolnir would strike and I move out of the way, the invader tried to attack (ended up beating the invader with a Seed of a Giant Tree). My experience with Elden Ring has been much better since I can't have my progression set back by trolling players unless I have a friend with me, and even then, I find the invasions to be a fun little mix-up between bosses. I know there are some people out there who love invading and having duels and stuff, but I genuinely felt like DS3 was kinda shitty at times because I couldn't progress or explore due to the constant invasions.

I've always preferred the games that have a coop group as the main invading target for that reason, if I invade someone solo who clearly doesn't know what they're doing, it just felt like bullying to me. Whilst in a 2v1 and 3v1 scenario at least you have to have SOME skill to be able to defeat the group, and hopefully, like it sounds like it did for you, it at least feels more balanced or even. Unfortunately a good vocal chunk of the community doesnt see it this way and just complains about invaders "ruining their jolly coop" with no regard to the fact that coop can really break the game in your favor, yknow, the game thats supposed to be *hard*

One think ER does the best by a long shot over other games imo is the lore told through the environment, Is incredible to see that some events in the game are not told by cuscenes not character dialogues, but you just see it by what you see, like the Dragon who attacked Stormveil, and probably was slayed when you fight Godrick, that some part of Altus are afected by deathblight because Godwin corpse is under there, that the main reason General Radanh halted the stars was because things like Astel, who arguably destroyed some cities, that one of the reasons of why Liurnia is has part of the civilization a bit underground may be because the floor got weakened after eroding for a long time (the lake of rot is underneath), that Farum Azula probably went above Limgrave due to the ruins you can find, included the beast of Farum Azula you can find, that Rykard actually loves Radanh a lot and thats why he has a painting of him, as well as Radanh having those giant mechanic Faces as Soldiers very likely Rykard built, who also has his mother Rennala, that Caelid was before the city of Magic and Dragons, and where Radanh learnt his magic powers... Those kind of things makes you realize how well the lore is told. You may say what you want about ER, but discovering the story like making an archeology expedition is fantastic.

@@BertoPleasethe older games were pretty good at that but ER is easily the best, one example among thousands is why you dont see giant trolls in chains in liurnia, trolls were on good terms with the carians and in fact joined forces to fight against the golden order in the shattering war, trolls were never enslaved there, u can see so many trolls in liurnia with magic spells and even magic helmets in that area. theyre one of the reasons the golden order never won against the carians and resorted to marying off radagon to the queen to achieve some peace between them, the older games dont really have this type of density in environmental story telling, the fact that its this big and retains this type of quality in environmental storytelling makes it better than the older games in that regard as far as im concerned.

For me the thing ER does better than the rest of the Souls games is the combat system, especially against bosses. It's something that's been very controversial, because it doesn't follow the mold of "have roll, will travel" as earlier games, particularly Dark Souls 3, which has pissed a lot of veterans off. Instead, it makes every defensive option (rolling, jumping, running, blocking) useful in different ways for different attacks, which makes learning the boss movesets way more engaging than just learning when to roll. On top of the stagger system rewarding the use of strong attacks, which require a fair bit more work to set up, it motivates a much more complete understanding of the bosses' attacks than previous games. Sekiro does do this slightly better, but mostly because it does a better job onboarding players into having to use a wider range of defensive tools than they may be used to.
@Erick-tv8oq
@Erick-tv8oq 9 месяцев назад
Completely agree. I think the only thing I would fault Elden Ring for in this sense is its failure to communicate what is different about its combat systems. For instance, I discovered that Elden Ring played differently from DS3 by sheer coincidence. In Margit's fight after a while he starts doing a double slash + cane stab into the ground combo, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to dodge all three attacks. One try by pure chance I dodged two times away from him instead of towards him and completely avoided the attack, which made me think "If I have to dodge away from him then I can't punish him, which means that attack is bullshit", but then I remembered I had the jump button. Next time he did the attack, I dodge twice backwards, and then did a jump + light attack as a punish, and it worked. That really opened my mind about how different Elden Ring's combat systems could be, simply because in Bloodborne/DS3 dodging towards the enemy is the answer 99% of the time. Another key difference between how I played and how every other Souls veteran played was how I avoided slow attacks. While others tried to dodge all slow attacks exactly in time, I simply ran away. Turns out Elden Ring has much better mobility when compared to other Soulsborne titles (I suspect that is the case because of the open world), and I used that so every time a boss held an attack I would simply avoid it entirely instead of potentially being struck while trying to dodge it. As a result, I had way too much fun weaving out of bosses' movesets and coming back to punish with a running attack/jump attack. The problem really isn't how different Elden Ring's combat experience can feel, but rather the fact that the game never made any efforts towards communicating these changes to old players. I saw hundreds of people thinking ER's bosses were bullshit because of the seemingly unavoidable combos and the dragged out attacks, when all it took for me to enjoy those fights was getting my head out of the Soulsborne box. If not for Margit's seemingly unavoidable three hit combo and my own stubborness, maybe I would have been on the same boat as the disgruntled Souls veterans.

@@Erick-tv8oq That's an amazing summary of the issue, yeah. I managed to figure it out partly because I happened to have just finished a Sekiro run, so I was primed for combat that demanded more than rolling, and partly because my first boss was the Ulcerated Tree Spirit in the Hero's Grave you start at, and that boss basically forced me to use all the game's tools to beat it, including running (because of the explosion attack), and that required the most letting go of old habits. Did teach me very quickly that with ER's shorter roll distance, if you roll more than once in a row in order to reposition, you would have been better off running.

Ds3 pissed me off, rarely punished spamming rolling. Plus, cancelling the longer, harder attacks is fucking garbage; completely removes the rule of having to commit to actions, again rewarding spamming rolls (also incentivised from having higher stamina, lower poise). It feels more based off of just one's reflexes than planning/positioning or strategy. I like that Elden Ring tried to course-correct this design decision, often successfully too. Unfortunately to me it sonetimes feels genuinely artificial; the input reading is straight-up nonsense sometimes, I've started my movements, then the enemies/boss uses their delayed attacks... they read this prior input, and I'm immediately hit. Plus the timing messes up the fast-paced flow of gamefeel.

About the Demon Souls one, I think Yhorm is a better improvement in gimmick bossfight. What I mean, is that you can defeat Yhorm WITHOUT the storm ruler by hitting his right arm(weapon holding one) or head, while dealing good damage this way(and getting a frequent ripostes). While Rycard has the spectacle, which I like, if you fight Yorhm by riposte, you spend more than 20 seconds in his bossfight, so you can see more of his attacks,which are cool. This way, I prefer Yhorm more than Rykard. I know that you can fight Rykard without serpenthunter, but when I tried it, I realised,that it would take eternity to beat him(and a lot of poise and fire resist). So, if you never tried fighting Yhorm this way, give it a shot, it's fun.But don't forget to take vertical attacking weapon, or you won't have enough reach. Zerolenny was able to do it with a broken sword, I was able to do it with a Greatsword of Artorias. Also, there is one thing I like about spells in DS2. Spices. You can lower stat required for the spell you like. Just a little thought on the topic.

One of the main criticisms of Souls games, that has once again reared its head in Elden Ring, is how defensive people in the community get over their favorite game. There's a decent chunk of people who just can't take criticism towards their favorite game, and just assume you must either be hating the game just to be different, or that you just aren't good at it, and therefore think its bad because you can't do well. Sekiro gets this issue the worst imo, with Bloodborne being second. I personally find Sekiro to be very overrated (still a good game, just not for me, and has several things I would've preferred to be handled differently) while I love Bloodborne, even though the graphics and framerate leave a lot to be desired nowadays. The more open the community is to criticism about their games, the better the feedback we can give to FromSoft, and the better they can make their games. p.s. the thing I think ER did better than previous games was enemy placement. DS2 (sotf) was especially bad about it, but all the games have moments where I can remember just fuming over certain sections and how annoyingly painful it was to get through them. Elden Ring is unique in that, most of the time, the annoying encounters are avoidable, which is a downright miracle considering how big the game is. Haligtree town and the branches before it can still burn in a dumpster fire though. Getting one-shot by ants or bubbles because I mistimed a roll or literally getting pushed off the map is not a good time.

Storm Ruler Varient, that's kind of unfounded; technically/mechanically it's improved, though thematically I'm not sure Storm King is supposed to feel grand, or seem that epic deep or challenging because apparently...They're prey, they're hunted-down they're slaughtered; I think It's intentionally simplistic, it's role-reversal they're previously quite imposing; now they're rendered much simpler: The hunter is now the prey. It is kind of somber, it's not outright gratifying feeling; they're sort of like animals, though they possess demonic soul's. Every game prior I wouldn’t choose to be a mage willingly because of how awful the magic is especially in ds3 (you can get away with spells in ds1, but I would still take a strength build over that mostly because of the sheer lack of quantity really over anything else). The ability to completely overhaul your attribute points at any time with the larval tears is so damn nice, especially with all the build variety and weapon quantity

The one thing I will say that is in detriment to elden ring is the difficulty. I found it to be far and away the easiest souls like game I’ve played thus far(haven’t played ds2 or des yet) and it’s sorta not even close. I’m not sure if it’s because of my builds or what (and no I’m not comet azuring or using RoB), but between spirit ashes and the ability to literally go anywhere at anytime allowing for any number of upgrades before you even face your first boss just made ER that much easier. I understand why the mechanics are there and I don’t dislike them, I suppose I’m just a little more partial to a linear and grounded experience because the difficulty curve is fine tuned and crafted for one sort of experience. Equally, I think these things are also why this one is the most played/purchased souls game, it just didn’t feel quite as rewarding as ds3, ds1, or sekiro for me. Still, it’s in my top 10 games I’ve ever played

For me I recognize ER as flawed for certain, but it is my favorite game in the series; and that mostly comes down to my love of spells. I am almost always a caster in some form or degree, and ER has in my humble opinion, the overall best selection spells in the series in terms of usability, spectacle, and fun factor. There are some duds for sure, but the amount of spells be it sorceries or incantations that are both usable and fun exceed that of any previous title. As some others have mentioned the build variety in ER is also a hi point, and I've put so many hours in the game just doing different runs with different builds. Each one is always some combination of physical/magical stats where I limit myself to certain categories of weapons and/or spells, like a blood themed arc/fth build.

Great video, I have beaten all the Soulsborne games, and I still think Elden Ring is the best one in the entire series. It has the best combat especially when it's against the main bosses, best main bosses, legacy dungeons & the OST is comparable to the best of Bloodborne & Dark Souls 3, has the most varied content, enemies, weapons, magics, environments, can't wait for the DLC though.

I've beaten every fromsoft game multiple times except demon souls. I consider Elden Ring the best of them all and a true 10/10. All 3 dark souls + bloodborne + sekiro do one or two things (max) better than elden ring, but ER is a masterpiece because it excels in every critiqued category. Plus its the best open world of all time IMO.

One thing i’ll say, I just replayed DS1 and 3 and Elden Ring just feels so much smoother to play. It feels like the best version of Dark Souls combat with so many options in how you can play the game. I didn’t enjoy the bosses much at first but after playing this game numerous times now I do enjoy fighting the bosses and it’s a pretty fun game. My main gripe is that I have to waste so much time trekking through the vast open world in order to get to the good parts. There is no incentive for me to explore things anymore so I just run to the critical path and it results in a lot of boring downtime riding torrent. I wish this game had a boss rush mode

3:30 WRONG. You just need a finger remedy active. No friend needed. Blues will pop in taking the place of the second and third summons. Mad tounge makes the second blue and invader appear. Blues are much slower then reds get called in, so watch out. The "needs friends for invasion" is annoying since theres a lot of people who want to invade without all the constant ganking. And the co-oper would probably bitch less about it since theres less peopleinvading them and more who are able to invade people who want that. Also i bleive most invavaders have a good respect for a solo host who wants invaders, most. Adding a slight 1-5% rune boost to the remedy would also be an ok idea in my mind so more peoole autually want to use it, and feel like its not only a punishment item for solo players, but a risk reward item. Its not out of the realm of idea for a change in the game considering the biggdr patches in the past.

whenever I was getting footage I tried a ton of different level ranges in BB and corresponding areas and it still took sometimes like 15+ minutes to match up with anyone, and it certainly doesn't help that there's no indicator of where there's activity in your level like in DS3 or something. Genuinely surprised it took you longer in ER, but there's also a ton of factors that affect it (platform, weapon level not matching level range, areas unlocked, etc)

My main issues is the exploration and how linear the map is, I definitely prefer the way they did that in most other games, but it genuinely makes me hesitate replaying it at times. Elden ring did the entirity of the combat system better than DS3, objectively it's literally just an improved version of it, same goes for the magic system. I still have a hard time playing DS3 without trying to initiate a jump attack or guard counter lol. Also another thing Elden Ring did better are the legacy dungeons, their design is fucking fantastic, each one of em had a unique atmosphere and approach to design and exploration, and also they are all explorable which makes it all so much better than previous legacy dungeons. Leyndell will always be on top. For sekiro I'd say the music or mini-bosses, as they were more complex and varied in ER than sekiro for me. Also i disagree with DS1, Elden Ring did almost everything better than it, especially the area design as we all know how big of a fall DS1 second half is. There are so many things that Elden Ring does better and improve upon from part souls game and it's sad how many people gloss over them, we need more appreciation for elden ring.

@flamingmanure

agreed, not a single area in the older games, including their dlcs, come even close to a single legacy dungeon in level design complexity, and thats because theyre designed with jumping in mind, now add the open world and underground to the mix where theyre designed for your double jumping horse, and i find it laughable to say the older games have better level design.
@Lofirainbows
@Lofirainbows 9 месяцев назад
I kind of agree, though The layouts of things (Enemies, etc) oftentimes lack strategy since they're non-specific to the space (instead theyre reused, hence the messed up agro-ranges/targetting distances also); it feels like the enemies came afterward the level planning; sonetimes like they just threw them in, and their layouts lack strategy/planning. It feels mostly like the opposite in their other videogames. The pairings of types of Enemies/bosses more so than other Fromsoft feel genuinely awful. Since they're not specifically designed around one another's movesets, their movements often contradict each other, making reactions to them unfair. Their proximity makes getting ganged feel un avoidable. Rewards obtained through items/chests oftentines felt kind of useful (Useless material/items, or build specific unlocks that personally were worthless).

Yeah. Compared to previous games, which always had 1 or 2 terrible levels, Elden Ring just has a high level of quality. Even the mediocre ones like Lake of Rot and parts of Mountaintops, are much better designed than Lost Izalith, Farron Keep and Nightmare Frontier/Mentis.

What Elden Ring did better than every Soulsborne game IMO is the mount, Torrent is way better than the older ones, is almost not a competition. For real tho, definitively the build variety. There is not even a comparison, armor, weapons, ashes, spirits, spells. There is so much customization that I would die of age before saying "there is nothing else to try". But on the bad hand, and I'm saying here just because I watched the videos back to back :3 , Elden Ring reuses bosses and enemies to an extreme. Even main bosses (looking at you Astel that have no reason to be in a random cave in the middle of nowhere), and can someone tell Miyazaki that shoving two enemies on the same arena don't make a new one, it doesn't matter if they are technically a pair (*stares intensively to Foreskin Duo)
