Thank you! To be honest when you pulled out the stepstool my first thought was "are you serious?? kitchen counters are way too low already!" but this actually makes perfect sense and it's the first actually helpful advice I've ever seen for this

Here due to sciatica caused by this body position. I am also planning to raise my kitchen wash basin a few inches and getting a shollower basin to reduce a prolonged arched back position. Also thought about a deeper kick plinth to get closer to the basin. I will in the mean time try this method you suggest. Thanks for the video

Definitely gonna try this! Just moved to a place where there isn't a dishwasher! Any tips for neck (and back) pain while washing dishes, particularly for tall people? My neck and shoulders are always bad when leaning over and down for washing dishes :(

Great suggestion Tony. I will add this to my list of topics. It is not easy to be taller than average because things are designed to the average. But there are a few things that can be done. Not perfect but they can help. Watch out for that.

Thanks :) and for sure..I'm 6'2 or '3 and wondered why my neck and back always hurt from leaning over to do dishes - literally have to hold the dishes up at chest height way above the sink lol to not feel a strain - them I read something about how average counters were designed for average women's height years ago! Never realized I would miss th dishwasher so much 😂😂

This can help bti. I also suggest strengthening your midback to help lessen the pain. You can look at my other videos that shows those exercises. Look at the one for better posture as well. Those exercises can help too.

You're welcome. I am glad you like the videos. I think the lack of a microphone is the problem. I have just been using the iphone as is. I used a microphone in some videos and I think it makes a difference. If the volume is too low, you may have to turn your volume all the way up just for the video.

When i put my leg on the stool my knee has no room so i have to turn to the side, otherwise my knee is jamming into the bottom part of the sink. How can i get around this??

Great question petruccifan38. This is the case for me at times too. In this situation, I do not recommend turning to the side. What I do is either 1 of 2 things: 1) I move the stool as close to the sink as possible (hitting the cabinet under the sink) and I take a bigger stride/lunge position. When I reach for something in the sink, I lunge forward and put my weight on the front leg. I then lunge back when I do not have to reach for the sink. I switch legs when my front leg get tired. 2) I take a wide stance and squat a little when I am reaching for something in the sink and stand up if not. These are not the best and can get your legs tired if you are not used to it but they are easier on the back. You get a good leg workout as well and your legs develop more muscle endurance as you do them. Hope this helps.

Will this technique work for me or should I get a back brace? Because right now I have no idea if I can keep doing my new job if my back is going to hurt this much everyday

Sorry to hear this Sean. This will definitely help your back. Wearing a back brace during work when you have pain is ok but I don't recommend wearing it all the time. Give this a try and if your back continues to hurt a lot, I suggest seeing a specialist for further management. I hope this helps.

Dear Virginia, I'm sorry to hear this. It is not easy to recommend a definite set of exercises without further evaluation. But based on just what you said, it is common that people slept wrong and their arm gets sore upon waking up. I suggest some the shoulder with some pendulum exercises and wants exercises and see if that helps. If it is because of that, the pain should go away in a day or 2. Hope this helps.

I know when I lean on the counter the pain goes away because like you said you're not using those back muscles or very little. How do you relieve a build-up of lactic acid?

Dear Kkimberly2004, you are very welcome. I hope this strategy works for you and help you with your pain. To answer your question, lactic acid can be flushed out of the muscles by moving, stretching or massage. The simplest way is to just move. The increase in circulation will flush these toxic chemicals out of the area and relieve the pain caused by it. The key though is preventing it from building up in the first place. Hope this helps.

Observe your posture during the activity. You may be slouching too much and that curves your mid and upper back and round your shoulders. This will affect your neck and upper back. Hope this helps.

My arms are too short to put space between me and the sink. When I use a step stool, even just on the side, I have to lean over my bent knee. It causes me to have to lean further over to reach the sink. Any other remedies, or exercises to strengthen the muscles that strain?

Good question @TexasServiceDogTeam. If you have cabinets under the sink, you can open them and put your foot up on the cabinet instead so you can get closer to the sink. beater g22 I'm sorry to hear that you hare having this problems. My answer is it depends. Without doing a more thorough history and evaluation, it is difficult for me to determine the internal imbalance that is causing your pains. I will say it is more likely a combination of the 2- prolonged sitting and washing dishes. The prolonged sitting is usually the bigger problem unless you wash a lot of dishes on a daily basis. Try to correct your sitting posture and try this way of washing dishes. I created other videos on how to sit properly and exercises to do when you sitting for long periods of time. Check them out and try them. Hope this helps.
