August 25/2021 Summer Hike
Today we are in Yoho National Park in British Columbia, and we will be hiking the Iceline Trail. The trail is 14.2 kilometers out and back, with an elevation gain of 864 meters.
The trail starts in the Takakkaw Falls parking lot. You start by following the river downstream until you come across a bridge going over the river. This bridge will take you to Takakkaw Falls. This is the second highest waterfall in Canada, 373 meters/1220 feet. Make sure you take the time to go up to these spectacular falls. Stay right and do not cross the bridge. At 1 kilometer you will be at the main trailhead for the Iceline Trail. Be ready to gain some elevation quickly on the switchbacks. At kilometer 2 you can go left and hike to Hidden Lake, we did this, but the lake was pretty well dried up. I bet in the Spring and early Summer it would look a lot different. As you continue to climb you will get some beautiful views of Takakkaw Falls. Once you are almost above treeline, you will see numerous glaciers across the valley. At about 5 kilometers you will now be above the treeline and start to see the moraines. One you hit the moraines you will be just below the Emerald Glacier. As you continue hiking this glacier will be on you left, the whole time. At about kilometer 5.5 you will come across a big rock. We stopped here for a break, just to sit below this glacier was magnificent. You will have stunning views in all directions. As you continue to go up and down the moraines, you will have a couple easy creek crossings, and come across a beautiful waterfall. We stopped at 7.8 kilometers, had lunch just below the glacier and a small lake. The trail goes about another half a kilometer to get to the end. This trail can also be done as a loop hike which is 21.7 kilometers. Next year I will be going back to hike the other portion of the loop.
This hike has a lot to offer, Takakkaw Falls, you are surrounded by glaciers, and you hike just below Emerald Glacier. I can sum this hike up in 1 word WOW.
This is my 64th video. Thank you very much for watching. If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up. If you would like to see my other hiking videos, subscribe to my channel, LIVE ON ALBERTA. I feature over 60 different hiking videos. CHEERS

Thank you so much for watching and commenting😁 I still want to go back and do the other half. It can be done as a loop hike but it is long. Definately one of the most stunning hikes I have done.

Thanks for another great hike. If you have to choose between the the iceline trail and sarrail ridge in kananaskas, which one would you pick? Thank you in advance for your opinion

Iceline100% a lot less people and glaciers everywhere. 😁 I have to go back and hike the loop the other direction so I can see the 2 or 3 waterfalls

Thank you SO MUCH for giving the date/year as well as the distance at certain points in the hike. If you don't mind, do you think you could just do the part of the hike...say to the 6k part and have it be worth the effort? I ask as my knees aren't the best and anything steep like that puts a lot of pressure going back down. Thanks!

Yes it is still worth it if you only go around 6k. You are up to the glacier and the views are stunning😊😊😊

Great video and information! We plan to do this hike around August 8, 2023. I'd love to know how you ranked this to other hikes you did in Yoho NP. We'll have 4 days there and trying to decide the best ones to do.

This hike ranks in my top 5, out of over 100 hikes😁 it can be done as a loop hike which is quite long. If you come at it from the other way there are a couple of waterfalls. I am glad we did it the way we did as we had views for the whole hike one we got above treeline.

@@LIVEONALBERTA thanks so much for the response. I was going to put this last on our must-do Yoho hikes since it seems so barren for quite a long time of the hike, but your video and comments have changed my mind.
@LIVEONALBERTA

@christysellers9088 I would move it up to number 1😁😁😁

@@LIVEONALBERTA good to know. I loved your Emerald Lake/Basin video - that's on our list too. We were not able to get Lake O'Hara tickets, so out last two are the Paget Lookout/Peak and Yoho Valley Trail/Twin Falls hikes. I didn't see these on your channel - have you done these?

@christysellers9088 Emerald basin was quite nice, I want to go back this summer and do it again. I have heard good things about Pager Peak, but it is a tough slog to the peak after the lookout. The Yoho Valley trail is on my list to do. This one does connect to the Iceline Trail but it makes it a long loop.

I did it at at he end of August, and I think it was the perfect time. If you go to early in the season you may have to deal with snow up there. I am planning to do the whole loop next year and see Laughing Falls and Twin Falls. I have done a lot of hikes but this one is is the best for the views. I will do it about the same time next year. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Go for it. It's a must do hike😁😁😁
