March 27/2024 Winter Hike, Alberta Canada
In this video I will be showing you the highlights of 4 lesser-known frozen waterfall hikes in the Canadian Rockies. They are Panther Falls, Wapta Falls, Kananaskis Falls and the frozen waterfalls along the Cline River.
Panther Falls January 25/2022
Panther Falls is located along the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park Alberta. The total width of this waterfall is about 20 meters (66 Feet) and its total height is about 66 meters (217 feet). It was around a 3-hour drive to get here from Calgary, but driving the Icefields Parkway in the Winter can be described in 1 word, MAGICAL. This is a very short hike, 1.6 kilometers (1 Mile) out and back with an elevation gain of 80 meters (262 feet). The trail down to these falls can be a little tricky. Cleats are a must if you want to do this hike. As an added bonus I had the whole place to myself.
Wapta Falls February 16/2022
Wapta Falls is in Yoho National Park, British Columbia. It is the largest waterfall on the Kicking Horse River, it is about 18 meters (59 feet) high and 107 meters (351 feet) wide. The drive to get here was 2.5 hours from Calgary. The trail is 9.1 kilometers (5.7 miles) out and back with an elevation gain of 259 meters (850 feet). The parking lot here is just off Highway 1 and is very small. The road to the trailhead is closed in the winter, so for the first portion of the hike you will have to walk along the road for 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). Cleats are a must if you want to do this hike.
Kananaskis Falls March 15/2023
Kananaskis Falls is located along Highway 40 in Kananaskis Country, Alberta. The trailhead is located on the east side of the highway as you approach the turnoff to Kananaskis Village. There is no parking lot here, so you must park on the side of the highway. The trail is 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) out and back with an elevation gain of 196 meters (643 feet). This was a short little hike but well worth it, and I had the whole place to myself.
Cline River Falls February 7/2023
The Cline River Falls are located along Highway 11 across from Abraham Lake in David Thompson Country, Alberta. The parking lot is located at the Pinto Lake Staging Area, and it is a pretty good size. The trail is 3.9 kilometers (2.4 miles) out and back with an elevation gain of 106 meters (348 feet). Cleats are a must for this hike. We combined this hike with a visit to Abraham lake to see the frozen methane bubbles. There was a film crew here that was going to film these falls at night for Travel Alberta. Below is the link to the commercial.
