I have officially had my 2019 Ram Power Wagon for one calendar year!! We're going to talk about everything... fuel economy, registration costs, tires, winches, interior, engine, exhaust, etc etc...
This is a no holds barred review from a through and through Ford Fanboy.
Bottom line is I love the truck - zero regrets. If you are thinking about a power wagon... DO IT.

Great job on video. Well laid out. 30 minutes was a lot but it was all useful information and no fluff. Real review from real owner. Fresh perspective compared to the internet car reviews that buy a fleet of vehicles to "test" for a year or are loaned them by the manufacturer. Thanks for posting!

I have the 2018 twin to yours, like your interior upgrades from the 18 like heated rear and power ports. Love my truck, towed a 34ft trailer with no issues. Had to put a canopy on mine so I get some drone from the non-stock exhaust. My mpg is 12.5 city/highway on reg fuel with occasional 14s if my foot is light and run premium. Stock wheels and tires, 35s coming soon. Totally agree on the brakes!

Justin, oil changes. Break the filter loose and then cover it with a 1gal zip lock bag, then unscrew it off the motor. It will not catch 100% of the oil, but it will catch quite a bit, then just zip the bag shut and put it in the trash. Easy.

I’m in the same boat, either PW or Gladiator. Gladiator is expensive. PW can be had for the same price, but in my suburban home a bit too large to fit in my driveway, and probably more truck than I need. I drive a Frontier now and I like the size. But if I was going full size I would seriously consider a Power Wagon. Nice complete review.

I bought a weigh safe hitch for my 19, 2500. I was able to get away with an 8" drop. For a power wagon, you probably want a 10" drop. I really like the weigh safe hitch because it's really easy to swap between ball sizes. I have the hitch that will show you tongue weight.

It goes over Wolf creek pass with no complaints At 60k the header bolts failed. Found out it's very common. I put solo loud muffler and it sounds great. Nice review

Justin, I am thinking of buying a PW but what you said about the brakes was bothersome so I did a little research and found that this is a common problem with these. You need a "scan tool" connected to the computer to open the ABS valves - then bleed the brakes. After that the sponginess is gone and good solid brakes again. I hope you see this. Art from Ohio

Awesome details! Great video! Stellantis owns Jeep and Ram. Price differences are mostly due to demand. Many Jeeps are bought as a style statement and never taken on a dirt road. That's fine with me as an investor. I like the Gladiator but think it's underpowered. The PW is the best HD off-road. The biggest penalty is weight and in some cases size in close quarters. Great choice! Just my opinion.

@@JustinKingOffroad they make by-pass filtration kits for pretty much anything with a filter. It takes a bit of cross referencing. You cross-reference your filter to the filter adapter. Then get the dual bypass filtration kit. You will have the full flow (regular type) filter and the ultra fine filter (by-pass) filters down to like 2 microns. It’s all in the same location. They do make quick kits that are diesel specific.

This was a nice video for someone who is considering a Power Wagon. The fuel economy is worrisome, but the 1500 pound loaded weight seems like a deal breaker when I start adding up the weight of a bed vault and slider bed and a steel bed cap with a rack. I plan to pull an overland camper as well.
@JustinKingOffroad
@JustinKingOffroad 3 года назад
Just remember these are way under rated trucks. You can add airbags to keep it level if needed, will take away from a bit of the off-road ability. My mpg is climbing now that we're warming up. At 13 on this tank so far, 1/4 tank in.

Each oil change adds x13 corrosion protection power to the undercarriage. :) And on the hawes fairlead, it should be polished smoother than what Dodge, err, Ram, has done with that coating. Rollers runs the risk of pinching the synthetic line at the roller end bushings and cutting it.

I had a 2020 Gladiator Rubicon and I bought a 2022 Power Wagon and I’m extremely happy I did. It’s a Gladiator on steroids, more comfortable,more space, 12,000 lb. Winch , there’s only one draw back, gas mileage but you don’t buy a three quarter ton truck for the fuel mileage. I put a cat back on my truck because I didn’t like the look of where they put the resonator . I’ve got the level 2 Power Wagon. I still have a 2005 Wrangler Rubicon LJ .

Going to order a new Tacoma Trd off road next year. Going with ARB Summit front bumper and Warn winch. Would you go 10k or 12. 5k winch? More for peace of mind than anything while in the Beartooth mountains near Red Lodge MT. Enjoyed the Alpine loop in our Jeep Liberty few yrs back. About as technical as we will ever get. Great videos thanks for posting.

Just for the extra winch reduction the 12k might be a good option. But... For normal use the 10k is plenty.

While oil filter location is not great it does have a drip guide that keeps the mess to a minimum. I’m sure you noticed a small funnel located right under the filter, you just crack the filter and let it drip for a while slowly that way it only gets onto one crossbar and doesn’t splash all over the place.

I also track my mileage on Fuelly. I can compare my 2018 Tundra, a half-ton truck, to your PowerWagon. My Tundra has a lifetime average (2 years, 16 000miles) of 11.2 MPG. My best tank was also 15.6 MPG. My worst tank (8.63 MPG) was this spring when I was hauling 10 000lb load after load of clean fill in a dump trailer while landscaping. I think my average should be better, but for the first year of the truck's life, it did mostly short trips of 2-3kms, not really having a chance to warm up at all (I also live in Manitoba, where it gets really, really cold, which doesn't help). Now I have a beater car for the short daily trips, and the truck only gets used on longer trips where it will have a chance to warm up and stop dumping fuel into a cold engine. My average should be going up over the next year.

for how heavy this truck is it really does good. i don't let it warm up much cause i park in a garage that i heat to 50. but if i'm out camping or something in the winter i'll give it 5-10 minutes. the truck appears to drink 8/10ths of a gallon per hour at idle per the obd port scan tools.

@@JustinKingOffroad I just got to the part where you overloaded your truck with flatbed trailer. Haha, I did similar this spring when landscaping. I picked up a Bobcat S185 in my dump trailer. Total weight was about 11000lbs, truck's only rated for 9800lbs. It was a 20 min trip through the city though, so I wasn't too worried. It's definitely not something I'd do often, though, or for a long trip. ibb.co/XLCnHPh

I was looking into one of these after having 2 1500 Rams. What I didn't like during test ride was lack of response when hitting the gas paddle. My 1500 gets up and to much better with 5.7 HEMI. I did like everything else including no drone noise when switching to eco mode. It does have about as much HP and torque as 1500 so I decided to keep mine.

Love the Power Wagon. I am a chevy guy but when it came to buying a new truck a couple years ago I went with Ram. I did not get the Power Wagon, went with the 1500 Sport with the 5.7 which for towing is rated at about the same as the Power Wagon. Would likely get a bit better millage with the Power Wagon when towing but everything has trade offs. And Brad bought a Power Wagon??? Guess I need to keep up better on Instagram.

The brakes on the 3500 ram are boosted. The 2500, across all trims, has a mushy pedal. I have to pump brakes in my power wagon, neither of my 3500 rams had squishy pedals. Even my 2500 cummins had squishy brakes. Also, when I was in Cheyenne Wyoming I had the same gasoline results your seeing. However, once I moved back to North Carolina, where we have 93 octane, if I don’t run premium gasoline, I get ticking with 89 and knocks with 87. At 30k on the clock, I do get about 1-2 mpg better with premium but I use it mostly because my engine doesn’t sound like trash.

I shut the whole abs system down with the zauto tazer and about ate the steering wheel coming to a red light. The abs system on the truck appears to be the cause of the mushy brakes. With it disabled they seem amazing.

Justin, have you looked into fumoto oil drain valves? We put one on our Dodge and it makes oil changes easy. You just slip a hose on and open the valve. It drains a little slower, which is the perfect time to grease some zerks.

Can the local Ram dealership re-calibrate the speedo if I were to get 35’s? Or does it void any warranty if that’s done? This is my second Ram with Ramboxes and I don’t think I could go without them. Awesome video!!

i appreciate the detailed review, loads of good insight here. Id like to hear your reasoning on having the JL, or where its use comes into play. hearing you say the Power Wagon is the Rubicon of the truck world. i wonder about your thought process on what gets taken where, on what type of trip/recoveries, and why. Thanks for all you do justin. hope i get to wheel with you sometime.
@JustinKingOffroad
@JustinKingOffroad 3 года назад
big thing that comes into play for me is trail "narrowness." I don't really want to intentionally damage the truck, so if it'll fit and it's needed to do a big pull, i'll take it. the JL comes in on skinny trails and hard to maneuver areas where the extra length of the truck might be an issue. one of the ops yesterday had me threading the needle on the trail with the truck, trying to back up to an RP (which is even more complicated in reverse), but we used a smaller jeep to winch him out since we needed to be "across" the trail to do it. Truck just wasn't a viable option at that point.
