Hey, Grant wanted to say thank you for your videos on the background and how to guide for this area manager role position at Amazon. I used this information to help me get hired recently at Amazon and I’m in the beginning stages of getting an offer letter within the next week.

Hey grant. Been watching your videos before I accepted my area manager offer recently (I was hesitant as I’m finishing my MS). I’m looking forward to following your good example on moving upwards in Amazon after this role. Thanks

Hi Grant! Can you make a video on how the transfer process works? How long you have to work in order to put in for a transfer?

Hey Grant, I just started as a Safety Specialist at Amazon at L4 level as a new grad. Eventually would like to do environmental or sustainable related role at the corporate level. Is it possible? How difficult is it to transfer internally from a fulfillment centre to the corporate level?
@Sam-mw8co
@Sam-mw8co 2 года назад
Hello Grant, hope all is well. For the internal transfer did you have to go through the hiring process over again with an interview. And what are your main take always from the AM role?
@PhantomGanhdi
@PhantomGanhdi 2 года назад
If you’re applying for other roles like going from Area Manager to Process Engineer, you’ll have to interview & meet the requirements for said position. Transferring/applying to another site within Operations & staying at the same level & position type: Example- L4 Area Manager in Texas to L4 Area Manager to California, you won’t have to do the whole interview process again; but you might have to do a brief interview to get to know you. The site that you’re trying to go to might even reach out to your Manager to find out some info about you

Hi Sam - yes, since the role was for a different sector of the company and not just a transferrable title I had to go through another set of interview loops. I love the question about main take-aways from the AM role. Obviously I learned a lot about the granularity of operations so I won't talk too much on that. First, personally before this role I had never worked in flow operations at a fulfillment center. I did not ever think about who was behind the scenes putting in the manual hours to fulfill our orders - I have a lot of respect for the associates who do this as well as the other AMs who help run the operations. Second, I learned through contrasting my experience as an AM with roles at my last company that I enjoy project-based work more than what I consider to be "reactive" work like what you do every day as an AM. Third, the experience of peak season and prime week was eye opening and very cool because it really is a whole different world at the facilities - extremely fast paced and you are around so many people which to me was enjoyable.

Hi Grant, just wondering what type of area manager were you? I just received an offer for an area maintenance manager internship position and was curious what you think about it.
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 2 года назад
Hi Yidi! I was an Area Manager over AFE - I have heard of the area maintenance manager position but do not know too much about it. As far as an internship goes I think it would be fantastic because maintenance is a beast anywhere you go. Learning the basics of it would help you understand how a site (Amazon or not) prevents issues from happening, and how they handle them when they occur

Would be interested in knowing the exact job title so I could look it up. The process engineer app I saw on Amazon asked for 10 years of experience.
@PhantomGanhdi
@PhantomGanhdi 2 года назад
There are L4+ positions for Process Engineer. You might want to change the level filter to L4 or L5. Also, the experience requirement can change even if the level is the same because each Teams have their own requirements as to what they’re looking for. Tip: Amazon has a Mentoring Program & you could signup for it & look for a Process Engineer to be your mentor to help you break into the role or any role you’re interested in at Amazon. The mentoring program can be an ongoing 3 month thing or a one time meeting. If you go to Inside.Amazon & type in Amazon Mentor Program in the search bar it’ll bring up a PhD with a link to the mentor site

Hi Kenny - Like the other comment on this thread, you are probably looking at more senior-level roles. L4 or L5 positions should not be requiring 10+ years of experience

Thank you for the update. how did you become process engineer? do you have engineering degree or you just got promoted to that? I just got hierd as an area manager and do you have any tips for me? Thank you k in advance

Congratulations on becoming an area manager! Periodically I would search internally for Process Engineering roles. When I found a role that interested me, I reached out to the hiring manager to learn more from them directly about the role and team. Through doing this I was able to identify the specific process engineering job I was most interested in, and then applied to the role and went through the interviewing process. Thankfully I was extended an offer, and still am with that team

@Grant0669 2 года назад
Hi Nathan, fantastic question. Rather than saying "You need to do x, y, and z in order to get your promotion", I will provide tips like you have asked. Aside from yourself, your manager should be your next biggest advocate for your career progression. If you do not already have a positive relationship with your manager, start developing that now. You can be a top performer, but if you don't have the rapport to go along with it, growth will not happen at what is likely your desired pace. Additionally, form a solid relationship with the current L3s in your department. To be promoted, you should be performing at that next level while you are a L1 - you could start shadowing the L3s occasionally, filling in your manager with what you have learned from the shadowing so they can see you are doing it to learn. Finally, start getting to know some of the other managers in the surrounding departments so that people start to know your name. If you feel like you have completed each of the items I have outlined above, then you should start having actionable conversations with your manager about what a realistic timeline looks like, and any further tasks you should do to put yourself at the top of the promo list. I hope this helps!

Are you allowed to be on your phone while working as an area manager?
@EvelynParks83
@EvelynParks83 2 года назад
Not really, I work at a Delivery Station and we are just too busy to be on the phone. There is always something going on.
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 2 года назад
I used my phone relatively frequently to check Chime messages - there are quite a bit of chats with robots who constantly push important data to you that you need to monitor, as well as HR requesting to see people, etc. Associates are not allowed to be on their phone so as a manager you should do your best to set a good example even though you do need to check yours for work relatively frequently (depending on what type of site you work at considering Evelyn's comment)
