This review is far better than any I've seen by professional motorcycle journalists who work for magazines.

I'd considered the GS but kept hearing about issues with the spline gear, as well as other "maintenance" issues. The Tenere bullet-proof reliability, consistent with YOUR review has moved me in to the S10 camp. You make it clear that this is a superbly engineered motorcycle. OH, and it SOUNDS AWESOME!!! Thanks for the excellent review.

Merci for the great review. Completely agree with all you said. I bought a 2015 ES with the paniers for CA$ 14,995 in April 2016 but only have 30k km on the odometer. For each of the last 2 years, have made 5000 km trips in complete peace of mind. Once from Quebec city around Lake Superior and back and the other down in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Penn, NY NH and back. Can't live without cruise control any more. So relaxing. Dreaming on making it to BC one day.

Great overall review.....I have the same bike, this being the second; 1st was a 2012(non ES)....new one is much improved, with cruise,electronic suspension, improved wind screen, and better fuel mapping)......I agree lean angle of side sand is probably my #1 complaint and was same on 2012. I just can't seem to find a happy medium with this stand, and it's further exacerbated when loaded with long haul luggage. The linked braking is a life saver, when you need to emergency stop and only have time to grab a handful of front brake. I've taken both my bikes on extremely long adventures into the wilderness (TRANS Taiga and BDR tracks), along with my riding buddy with his BMW GS and there is nothing he can do that this bike can't do equally well), just saying. This bike is easy to maintain and I do all my own maintenance.....top end engine work is challenging because of the compact nature of the engine and frame. Time, patience and a shop manual are a must. Happy and safe travels.

Great video, thank you. I appreciate the finer details, positive and negative, that you have pointed out. I hope to buy a bike again next year and the Yammie ST is at the top of my shopping list. The only other bike that seems to compare with regard to price is the Africa Twin. However, as I will be riding two-up most of the time, the Super Tenere seems to be preferred by those in the know. I live in Vancouver, so hope to be riding your way at some point 😀.

I live in Scotland where we have some amazing roads and scenery to ride through, as you do in Canada. My dad lives in Edmonton Alberta, so it was nice to see a little bit of the area. I’ve never been to Edmonton, but I did visit him when he lived in Calgary and we drove out to the Rockies one day in the car, but I always said I’d love to come back one day and ride out there on my motorcycle, it looks an amazing place to ride. I really enjoyed your review on the Terere. I love the look of the bike and I’m definitely considering one for next year, hopefully in March or April so only a few months to wait woohoo!! 🤣. I’ll let you know with a wee review of my own when and if I buy one. Cheers. Say hi to my dad if you see him 🤣🤣

Excellent review! Just found a 2013 S10 with only 10k miles for under $10,000 USD from a completely solid dealer. Did tons of research and got it for the overwhelming reviews of reliability and bulletproof features. Did about 400 miles and the clutch died. Now the shop is trying to find replacement parts but no promises. I'm now VERY reluctant to do the mile-crushing trips I had planned throughout Canada and the western US over the next 2-4 years. Can't get stranded again with the attendant cost for towing and the repair. Not sure if I get the only lemon in a basket of apples or if it was a fluke. Pretty hard to figure out how someone burns out a clutch in 10k miles (that's not even a single season for me). If I can get the bike repaired, I'll still give it a go but I'm very disappointed with this early, unexpected and expensive failure. Glad you're having a better experience.

Sorry to hear of your issues. The 2013 was the last year of the old generation. 2014 to 2023 is the 2nd generation. A riding buddy of mine just bought a 2019 Super T (Same bike as mine) with 13,000km for $14,000 CDN. After 2 years of riding I have 53,500km on mine with no issues. I had a 2013 ST, then upgraded to a 2015 ST ES. Love the thing. Have about 40,000 miles on it. Am 71 years old. Agree that the "shop" panniers want to bend the key. Affordable, I keep the back seat off to load my camping stuff. I've done 1000 miles in a day, routinely do 700 to 800 on stock seat with packed gear giving me a back rest. Also added "highway pegs" and made my own winglets. Only complaint, the stock plastic bottom crash plate apparently lost a spacer for the rear bolt. It is tapered. When reinstalled it penetrated my lower engine plate resulting in an oil leak. Had this fixed with a weld, heard of another who had the same problem. But, with that one exception, a great, great machine augmented by the drive shaft.

I do appreciate the review mate. Coincidently, I am looking for my retirement bike at this present time. I have checked out the BMW GSA 1250, Ktm SAS, Africa Twin 1100 and the tiger 1200. Currently have 2 vstrom's,650 and 1000. Both great bikes that I really cannot fault,BUT, I am looking for a bike that ticks all of my requirements as a last touring bike. I live in Australia, and its a bloody big piece of land! My last bike will have the following; shaft drive+ cruise control+comfort(getting older), and the two most important factors are (1) reliabilityand (2) value for money. I don't need 165+HP anymore as I would like to enjoy the riding I intend to do once retired. Will certainly be testing out the new S10 ZE at my Yammie dealer. Thanks again mate and cheers from Oz. Subbed.

Value for money, this is the best ADV bike out there IMHO. I paid $16,500 vs $31,000 for the BMW. And Yamaha makes the most reliable bikes in the world. I have had the bike for 13 weeks and have put on 17,000km. I normally ride 30-35,000 km in a season which is 5 months here in Edmonton Canada. You will love the bike. Ride safe

Hello. Fellow Canadian here from the Province of Quebec. Nice review. You seem to have the same problem as me with the wind as every time I make a RU-vid video I get a windy day :-) I got a new bike earlier this year and the ST was on my short list. I really liked the looks of it and it felt really good when I was sitting on it. I was looking for an adventure bike with shaft drive and as I am certain you know very well, there are only a handful of them to pick from. I ended up getting the R1250GS because mainly, that's the bike I have been wanting for a number of years and at this point in my life, I am 55 yoa, if I did not get one now, I probably would never get one. But you are right, although I love the GS and I certainly have no regrets buying it whatsoever, I don't think it's worth the $12K extra cost over a bike like the Super Tenere. But that is the bike I wanted so I got it. This being said, I could very well see myself riding a Super Tenere in a few years. I am not much of a mechanic and I am worried with maintenance cost for the GS. So we'll see. Congrats on your bike mate. The red tank looks awesome. Your bike is beautiful and you look like a cool guy. I'm sure I'd love riding with you if I were from the Edmonton area. Being a retired military guy, I was there on many occasions during my career and I wouldn't mind driving up to Cold Lake on my bike. Anyway, stay safe my friend and put that bike away now. I'm sure snow will soon be covering your city. Cheers :-) Dan

I have a 2022 and love it. The gear indicator is, frankly, stupid. Don't get that. The seat - after I did a simple, quick fix and made it dead horizontal - is perfect for me. The rest is truly incredible. Does EXACTLY what is was designed to do. Very clever, and a joy to ride. My last bike, a V-Strom 1K XT, is supposedly in the same category, but this on an open road is in another league. And even at 585 wet, it's not any more difficult to work with in the city, but a lot better on the highway. 50 mpg at 80 mph. Can click off 500-mile days easily. And, unlike most of the competition, ultimately provides much more saddle time (vs. shop time) and a fatter wallet.

@shortattentionspangarage1312
@shortattentionspangarage1312 Месяц назад
The reason the gear indicator doesn't work with the clutch pulled in is because of how it works. It says the gear based on two parameters: speed and RPM. If you think about it, each gear has a specific speed curve as RPM increases. The gear indicator knows this so it doesn't work until you're moving with the clutch out. Even if you pull the clutch in while rolling, it'll still show the dash (because your RPM's are out of any speed curve for all gears). It's easier to do this than have a switch with seven positions connected to the transmission like the V-strom.

I agree on the gear thing. I came from a wee as my first bike and it threw me off. To this day I deal with it without frustration but it’s just something I have gotten used to. If I got a bee bike where the gear indicator worked right, I’d be like ahh. I bought a foot for my side stand and it for sure inspires confidence. I thought the stand without the foot seemed sketchy. I have givi cases which are great. I loved the wee. I might go to a v just for a change one day. Plenty of power and jump to this bike. I need to get my suspension adjusted and maybe upgraded. I’m 240. I have the rox risers that do help. But I’ve thought about changing my bar also. I have the madstad bracket and windshield along with the mra wind deflector. Very good combo. Way better than stock. I’d love to know what highway pegs you have. I changed out my headlights to led but had to get the extended light caps. Brakes have been fine although I think I did something to my rear brake that screwed it up. Still troubleshooting. It’s a great bike. I have the seat concepts seat and it’s ok. I think I want a Russell but can’t bring myself to spend the money. Nice review.

What suspension did you get? How much did it cost you overall?
@Doug_Morgan
@Doug_Morgan 3 года назад
My solution for the kick stand was actually changing the spring on the rear shock. The stock spring on the ES is way too soft and as soon as you add some accessories like bags and a top case the suspension settles too much. The preload on the spring was almost half of the travel. With the new stiffer Eibach spring and a custom machined spacer (the Eibach spring is a bit shorter) squat is now what it should be. BTW mine did blow over in the wind on a trip in 2019.

Thanks for the video. Why did you go with SW Motech panniers, rather than Givi Trekker Outback? Also in your first video you showed you couldn't open the lids of the OEM side cases without having to remove your Givi topbox first. Can you fully open the lids of your SW Motech side cases while having the Givi topbox installed in place (lids fully open and attached with the cases, while topbox still installed)? Is it easy for a passenger to sit behind you with these SW Motech cases being far away from the seat and on the way of your passenger at the moment when your passenger is attempting to climb on the bike and sit? How many kilometers are you getting from your tires before you need to replace them, both front and back? In your owner's manual, between how many kilometers interval are the spark plugs suggested to be replaced? Is it a labour intensive job? I can see that your tank needs to be removed. In your owner's manual, what's the minimum octane gas that is required for your bike? I've been riding a 2016 FJR1300ES for 6 years now. I love my bike, but am thinking of a change. I have about 43,000 km on it.
@highmilagerider1154
@highmilagerider1154 Год назад
Ok, that's a lot of questions. Let's see if I can remember them all. 1) I picked SW-Motech for 2 reasons. Their listed as being water proof whereas the GIVI's are listed as only water resistant + I wanted black bags. 2) I have the wide GIVI monokey 58L top case off my Vstrom so it overhangs the 47L side case by about 1 inch. I can fully open both lids while the top case is on, but I have to wiggle the 47L case lid. If you buy the SW-MOTECH top case it's no problem. 3) No problem for my wife to ride as a passenger and reach the grab rails. 4) I run the Michelin Pilot Road 5 trail tires front and rear and get 15,000km out of the rear and 19.000km out of the front. 5) I have never changed the spark plugs, the dealership does that kind of stuff for me. Because of the km's I ride I do mine about every 25,000km. Not sure what the manual says off the top of my head. 6) Manual says min Octane is 91. But I have only used 87 Octane. My Yamaha mechanic told me I can use 87 without and issues. For curiosity I dyno'd my bike on both and found more HP/Torque on 87 Octane with no knocking or pre mature detonation. My 40,000km.valve service was perfectly In spec and I now have 52.000km on my bike. The upright riding position combined with the bikes big bags, electronic goodies, wing protection, low cost to buy and service and reliability IMHO make it the best over 1000cc ADV motorcycle. It's very comfortable for long distance riding, good gas milage, lots of power (will easily go over 225 KPH if you choose to) and its amazingly fun in the twisties. I don't think you will be disappointed. Ride safe.

Very fair and accurate review - thank you! I went from a V-Strom 650 to a 2015 Super Tenere ES (bought off a guy in Edmonton, no less!) - no regrets. Sledgehammer of an engine, imo. I always ride with my wife, and there's tons of passing power, as you attest to. I'm a smallish 62 yr old, 5'10", with normal legs, and sometimes the weight does bother me, but only when I project myself to 10 yrs from now. I have no desire of ever buying another bike - hope to put 2-300,000 kms on the S10 I have. (Goggle 200,000 mile Super Tenere - I was amazed at what I read). I'll just need to keep in shape to muscle the bike around when parking/backing up/moving around my garage, etc. I just love this bike - I've never not owned a bike since I was 15 yrs old, and have ridden many many diff bikes, and EVERY time I get a chance to ride my S10, I smile, and don't want to get off. Hey, was that Hwy 6 in BC (the first road we saw)? Btw, I think the Fortnine review was also very fair.

The stand is ok. Adjust preload more and it will lean easy :-) This is not a dirty bike, you didn't see really dirty S10 after off-roading under rain :-) Yeah, seat it's a little bit hard. Yamaha original winglets are a rip-off, I bought aftermarket from UK, 2 times cheaper. Also you can buy from a guy in Alberta NAV Bar stabilizers, so your windshield and dash will not play and vibrate too much on bumpy roads or on a highway, check his shop on Etsy - LadlesportADV.

I will test the Pan America in May outta Red Deer. But that one fully equipped will cost me well over 30k. And tbh I like the idea of a shaft drive for the long term so I’m kinda split between BMW GS, Triumph Tiger & the Super Ten.
@highmilagerider1154

I love having the shaft drive. Both the GS and the Triumph tiger are great bikes however they are very expensive compared to the Super Tenere ES. In Canada my 2019 Tenere ES was $18,000 and the GS is $31,000 + bags and the Triumph is $25,000. The Tenere will do everything the other bikes will do for a fraction of the cost. Ride safe

Prices for 2022 are $19,200 + ship and assemble and dealer fee + tax. So I am looking at used Super tenere. 2012 are price around $ 10,000on the used market. Early models had some clutch problems.I am looking at new ones because of the adjustable suspension and cruise and heated grips. The bag locking mechanism sucks. I would change the bags too. Or go with soft luggage. I enjoy your video and the information you provided. I live in Calgary and share some of the same travels and roads. At present riding a Suzuki V Strom 650. It's just bias, the BMW 1200/1250 is always the benchmark with moto journalists, they even can't say postive comments about the new Triumph 1200, kgs lighter than old model, the GS has had spline gear and shaft issues over the years, some actually breaking, but we dare not talk about that!! A honest review of the sadly undersold S10, which Yamaha obviously can't make at profitable levels anymore and so discontinued.

Seriously. This is not a bike you'd buy if you are a new rider. Having that been said...the "dash" is the indication that it's in gear. Also, we experienced riders whether it be dirt, street or otherwise, know what gear or know that we are in gear. And the nitpicking that you convey that you HAVE to step, or tap on the shifter to figure out if you're in gear is WHAT WE all have done since day one before gear indicators were developed 20 years ago. So...tell us something that is worth learning instead of nitpicking a product that doesn't deserve it.

Thanks for your comments. I’m not nitpicking the bike. I absolutely love the ST. It’s by far the best bike I have ever owned. I look forward to putting hundreds of thousands of KM’s on it. @@highmilagerider1154 The reason it shows a dash when you pull clutch is because it does not know what gear is it in, but it calculate it from speed and rpm, and to do that, it needs rpm, so can't calculate under clutch and just gives you dash so you ar least know it is in gear.
