Does a 2012 Yamaha Super Tenere make sense in 2020? Why buy a used Tenere when you can buy a bmw gs, tiger, ktm?

Totally agree with your assessment of the S10. I do not understand why people are so obsessed with hp on adventure touring bikes. The whole purpose of an ADV bike is to take you anywhere in comfort and safety. Torque is what matters.

I’m coming from the sportbike world so I’d like an adventure bike that can give me a thrill of a full throttle twist pull every once in a while. That’s why I’m looking at h.p. numbers.

In order to turn off the ABS, you have to put the bike on the center stand, tun it on and engage first second and third gears with the rear wheel spinning. You don't have to spin it fast. When the rear wheel is spun with the front wheel stationary, the bike throughs an ABS error turning the ABS warning light on on the dash. As long as you don't turn off the bike, the ABS remains cancelled.

Outstanding video! You nailed it on torque and numerous other advantages. Have had 3 S10's over 150k miles and neither ever failed to start or perform as predictably as they do. Each with OEM panniers, bars, and skid plate. Graphite dry lube for panniers prevents any hassle. Ride 70/30 almost strictly. Battlewings are great for any road condition and light trail, but more knob for further expectation. Change rear rubber, oil-Rotella T6, filter, final drive fluid- Valvoline Power Syn 75-90, clean/lube clutch and brake levers, and clean/lube shifter and brake pivots every 4-6K mi depending upon whereabouts... Simple quick routine to save any worry and maintain feel. Owned many dirt/dp/adventure bikes and will never again have any main bike other than the S10. It's the Swiss Army knife of adv bikes with experienced respect to KTM, BMW, Ducati, and Honda.

I traded in my Triumph T120 Bonneville 1200cc motorcycle for a 2023 Yamaha Super Tenere 1200. The Triumph was a naked bike and over 65 mph would try to blow you off the back of the bike. Living in West Texas the closest service for this bike was 275 miles away. I hated all that. So far, I love the Tenere, the shaft drive, the cruise control, the wind protection, heated grips. I just wish the money the bike, came with some luggage and the winglets.

Thanks for the info I too have a big red pig only I have the XR 650 L. I plan on buying a 2021 supertennery in a few months I have been watching all the videos on this bike yours also and I am excited and cannot wait. I’ve been riding dirt bikes most of my life and have several of them for my kids we do a fair amount of trail ridding in northern Michigan. happy to say the Tennery will never see any of those trails LOL but I like the gravel road and Forest Road options.

I agree with your comments. have had my Super Tenere for 6 years and 25,000 miles and it does it's touring job perfectly. So-called Adventure Bike magazines here in the UK only seem to review BMWs,' BMW's, KTM's and BMW's. No mention of the Super Tenere. The model is now over 10 years old and is in serious need of a update but my understanding is that it will be discontinued in 2021 and the Yamaha focus will be on marketing the Tenere 700 and Tracer models. Sad.

THe super tenere has something really good too it's their price. You can get them for just a bit more than a vstrom 650. The early gens that is.

Dunno..dont think I`d complain about the low fuel warning.Those fuel pumps depend on gas to lubricate/cool them.In any dry state they go quick..Damn Good bike for going far..Cheers !

I want one for the shaft drive and 7.5 inches of suspension travel. The roads in Wisconsin suck, so more suspension the better.

Mine has been a great bike. It suffer from a horrible seat like most others bikes of this type do. Actually, the seat itself is pretty good for me (165#), but it's angled / tipping forward to much, enough to cause me to slide fwd against the gas-tank rendering it uncomfortable. I managed to tilt it back some by replacing the rubber bumpers underneath and utilizing an airhawk cushion - but it's still insufficient for all day comfort. I just ordered a Seat Concepts kit to rebuild it. Hopefully that's the cure. The other item that's annoying on my 2012 is the vibration through the 2800-3000 range. The cure for that is installing a 2nd Gen clutch basket. I ordered that today. This assembly weighs10oz more than the original so it's likely going to feel more torquey. The cam chain tensioner was an issue - it failed. I replaced that with a manually adjustable tensioner at 28k mi. and adjusted the valve lash at that time. @ 40k mi and I like this bike much more than the 1150 GS I had and I like it as much as my Wee-strom that I still have for all the reasons you state.

Well done sir,,👍. 012 owner also. My S10, I refer to it as, " A truck ". It really is a donkey,, mule,, tractor,, etc 😂. It is a big heavy pig. Fell on me once,,🤦‍♂️ that was ugly. Thankfully a fellow was nearby and lifted so I could get free. Broke my left foot 😖. Anyway,, last tank I got 44+ mpg. Cheers 🍻, G. Safe travels.

Great bikes...i have a 2012 model. I had it remapped & did away with the catalytic converter,free flowing muffler....whoa!,much better engine. Handles surprisingly well off road,eats up dirt roads all day long. A bigger front wheel would be nice but i cant fault the bike.

It’s almost 2024 and I still want an s10. Currently on a Moto Guzzi v85tt, it’s only fitting that I’d want another reliable tractor. I ride two up a lot, this bike just makes too much sense for me and I could use the extra Hp/torque and dealer support when on longer loaded up adventures. Here in Canada a GSA is $30k… not worth it for a German badge and questionable reliability with the newer versions being a computer with wheels.

There seems to be a ton of value in these used bikes. Lots of examples in the 20-30k mile range meticulously maintained that can be had for under $6k even with all the accessories. It's almost like it's too sensible of a choice.

Yeah, i like it when bikes are often overlooked for the latest and greatest. The super Tenere is quietly one of the best bikes out there with a shaft drive and very low maintenance. But people seem to care more about spec sheets these days.

Thanks for the video. I've been considering this bike and the T700, but most likely this one cuz of the cheaper value. I don't want to spend a small fortune and not really use it to it's full capability

The T7 price tag doesn't justify why you shouldn't get super10 because overall the s10 is more versatile.

I took this one in 2022 with 50K km (30k miles), didn't do any maintenance coz it came to me straight from service. I have put 15k km and ST doing pretty well. But one thing annoys me extremely which is lights. At the night even the smallest curve makes a problem, you simply do not see anything.
@davidklementis5913

I love Yamahas and the Super Tenere is a great bike, but the T7 is the one that's high on my next bike list. Haven't been able to justify trading my FZ6 in though. 50k miles, going strong and does all I need it to (90% of what I want to do). Maybe when I've saved enough and can convince my wife it would be best to add a bike and keep the FZ, lol.

Loving my ST! Best bike I’ve ever owned. It’s a true do it all bike. It’s easy to work on also! Just did a valve check and replaced some shims. I plan on keeping it as long as I can. I’m looking into a FJR or R1 for my next bike what you think? Is the FJR to similar to the S10?
@nathancjenkins
@nathancjenkins Год назад
when you say 1190 makes 30HP more, you're comparing crank HP of the S10 to rear wheel HP of the 1190. I recco comparing crank to crank or wheel to wheel.
