Simulation of 10.5cm leFh 18 howitzer projectile hitting hull side armor of Char B1 bis tank.
10.5cm Pzgr (14kg AP, 0.24kg explosive) at 420 m/s
vs
60mm bolted RHA at 40 deg. + (~3 deg. fall angle)
10.5cm leFh 18 howitzer muzzle velocity (Pzgr, charge 6) - 475-480 m/s.
420 m/s refers to a distance of approximately 0.5km

The kind of welding necessary to join large plates together was a pretty new technology in the thirties - oxy fuel welding had only been invented thirty years prior, and arc welding of the kind needed to join thick steel plates had only been developed ten years ago.
@patrykb_
@patrykb_ 6 месяцев назад
Welding was quite well known in Poland, and yet it was only at the end of 1939 that welded structures such as 10tp began to appear. At that time, there were only a few countries that widely used welding, and a few years later only the British and Italians were left with rivets and screws...
@alexsv1938

While welding was known for a good while, not everyone in the industry had access to it or the qualified workers to use it. An example being Britain which pursued welded, casted and riveted tanks throughout WW2.

According to German Kummersdorf range tests, when shot from the 105mm. L.28 leFH 18 field gun, the PzGr. APHE shell could penetrate up to 73mm. of RHA @ 0 degrees @ 100 metres. The shell was intended to be used against pillboxes, bunkers and fortification turrets, rather than tanks.

Dang! Didn't know just how much welded armor improved protection until I saw this. You always hear how riveted/bolted armor wasn't as good as welded, but the contrast shown here really puts it into perspective.

Riveted armor is fine. The real savings is weight. Riveted armor is riveted onto an existing frame. Many/most navies in ww2 had tons of riveted armored ships and nobody thinks twice and says "omg American ships were so weak"

Could you possibly do the same match up but with the 10.5cm firing a HE round please? Reason for why is, that as you are more than likely to already know, the 10.5cm was a LIG (light infantry gun) at the time of it's conception (but it of course found it's way onto many a mount and chassis as the war progressed) and as such given the window of time that this match up would have happened, the amount of AP ammunition in it's store would have been quite minor indeed. Additionally I am curious to see if the HE round carries enough energy to cause a similar spalling effect on the riveted aspects of the B1's construction. And as ever dude thank you so, so much for your hard work and efforts involved in producing these exceptionally niche videos for the likes of idiot militaria otaku such as myself. You have answered so many questions about arms and armour for me without the need to try and get my hands on testing and penetration charts and I truly cannot express my gratitude to you enough. I hope you are doing great dude and that you had an absolutely brilliant time during the festive season and the New Year. My sincerest regards, Bill

If the projectile actually detonates, it's not in very good condition there. In practice, APHE often failed to detonate during penetrations as the impact would destroy or dislocate the fuse before the delay detonated
@contagioushavoc5794
@contagioushavoc5794 6 месяцев назад
Did contemporary naval AP shells have the same issue, or was fuse reliability more of an issue for smaller shells?

@@kirotheavenger60 yeah, there's a reason bottom fuzes and even double fuze designs were invented.
@kirotheavenger60
@kirotheavenger60 6 месяцев назад
@TheArklyte the problem is not even necessarily the fuse, you can see here the body of the shell has been all but obliterated by the impact, which is often a problem with angled impacts. So the explosive just might not be there anymore when the fuze detonates.

I'm really surprised it managed to pen so smoothly. This 105mm round at 420m/s shouldn't have more than 70mm of pen and that 60mm plate is hit at quite an angle. How is it capable of making such a clean pen? Is it cause of poor armor quality on the French tank or Germans had some kind of superior quality rounds? Cause by the looks of it, this round could pose a threat even to late Sherman variants, which had 63mm of armor at around 46° angle.
@Kesssuli
@Kesssuli 6 месяцев назад
How that was clear penetration ? less than 1/4 from projectile actually went inside of that tank ? Mass is something what will do funny things even at relatively slow speed. Actually shell acted as puncture devive and hardened armor shattered from impact. And impact force drived that inside of tank what was most of flying mass in crew compartment. Have you seen those bullets vs hardened steel plates ? There was nice case where 5.56 tungsten core didnt fully penetrate that plate but piece from of plate itself became a projectile which went quite deep inside of gelatine.
@jintsuubest9331
@jintsuubest9331 6 месяцев назад

@Patryk-ix2zr

@@Kesssuli I see this as a clean pen as the round made a hole inside out and even part of it went inside. What I expected it to do was to get stuck in the armor and send some shrapnels inside. Surely didn't expect it to make a hole.
