I loved demos during the 360/PS3 era. It really made me decide if a game was for me or not. And it exposed me to more games. It also gave me new short experiences since i was a broke kid. I just wish more companies would bring back the red faction guerilla destruction. Who doesn't love collapsing buildings and seeing bits of it come off one by one? I've never met a person that didn't like it. I want that back.

This is the main reason I absolutely refuse to pay $70 for new games. It seems to almost be industry standard nowadays to release a game barely playable with tons of bugs and to "fix them later". Uhhh, no that's not how this works. I paid for a game and it should work plain and simple. Just like any other product or service that you pay for, it works as intended and not relying on "promises" that it will be fixed later. Until this changes, I will not be buying any games priced above $60. (Even some $60 games I'll wait for them to go on sale before purchasing) Edit: spelling

Me playing the Darkness 2 demo 40+ times as an 11, or 12 year old, is the reason I even remembered it was a thing, and caused me to look into it a couple years ago. Does anyone else remember when the PS3 came out and devs were showing off intricate destruction physics? It released with a game called Pain where you shoot a character through various objects which break dynamically and you could see the grains in the wood stretching and pulling away from themselves. I wouldn't want that and I also don't think demos reduce the need for reviews either because they go into the game as a whole and not just a slice. Not to mention that they definitely don't need more to talk about, there's always plenty, the art tho is sort of to be as informative as possible in as little time as possible. I kinda hate to see those so called reviews that have a runtime of 1+ hours like it's an accomplishment that they don't have a filter on what's useless information and incredibly inefficient with the amount of time/words used and depending on the game you could potentially just play the game yourself with that time.

They aren't, not in the same way. Old demos were like "free samples", a way to let people know the game exists. You found out about a game through discovering their demos. Now, you discover a demo from already having interest in the game. It went from a marketing tool of advertising awareness that the game exists to a tool to question if consumers _really_ want to buy this product. Before it was a gate of wonder to open up possibilities. Now it's a tool of skepticism. Something amazing to something gross.

@@BeastGamerKuma Maybe you are just too young then. Back then, you didn't look for demos. You didn't find them, they found you (sometimes literally in a cereal box or thrift store). Now, you have to go to a games page to find the demo. The demo is ALWAYS on a games page now. There is nothing random about it. They are not the same thing. Not in the same way. I compare old demos more to gamepass, free weekly games on the Epic store, PS Plus Monthly or Amazon Prime games. You just get random tastes of games that you never heard of and it's awesome. Only difference now is most of the time, those cost subscription fees and give you the full game rather than just a taste to get you hooked (because now, publishers are selling platforms and ecosystems, not just individual titles anymore).

Great list! Definitely some things I love are coming back around. What I see little glimmers of, and would love to see more of… is world enhancing or altering add ons. We explore the world a developer builds and then a little down the road we get a whole new perspective. I associate this with the ps2/ps3 era. The big boys like R* putting out the “stories” accompaniment to GTA3 and GTA: VC. Or the lost and damned/BOGT. Or one of my absolute favorites: Undead nightmare. Or Valve taking us on a different trip thru Aperture Science, or the episodes of half life. And less AAA but still big titles like what telltale did for the walking dead universe. I really liked investing into a narrative or a world and then over the next few months or years getting a new perspective on it. A what if style scenario like a zombie outbreak, or an alternate perspective like stepping into the shoes of who was on the receiving end of that shoot out? yeah. Bring that back 🤣

First, huge props for bringing up Demo's. I absolutely LOVE when a new game has a demo on the PlayStation Store, i can't tell you how many times I've bought a game after playing the demo, that i wasn't previously interested in but was convinced by the demo. They're back and I'd argue even better than before. My nomination would be Retro- 2D games. I think of Octopath Traveler, but there's a multitude of old school style 2d rpg's & metroidvanias that have made a resurgence of late, and I'm HERE FOR ALL OF IT.

I love the comeback of game demos and Linear games. When I was in my teens I loved the idea of super long open world games but now that I'm working a full time job and wanting to spend time with my girlfriend, it's hard to juggle free time and I get burnout from playing just one game for too long. Beyond that, linear titles just feel more solid in terms of narrative experience and don't overwhelm you with fluff/filler content. Fallout and Elder Scrolls type games are the few exceptions where I love having a huge world with a long story.

The return of super difficult games is something I`m honestly not about. I don`t have vary good reflexes or hand/eye coordonation, and I no longer have the free time and patience I once had as a kid, to dedicate myself to a game, and "git gud". I also don`t like it when games are constantly showering me with tutorials for arbitrary new mechanics, or are generally just trying to hold my hand throughout the whole game. I vary much prefer the simplistic approach where a game gives me a quick rundown of what`s going on and what I`m doing, gives me a brief explanation and a small area to figure out any abilities or game mechanics I may come across, points me in the general direction of where I should maybe be headed next, and than sends me on my merry way to figure stuff out for myself. This is something BOTW did beautifully IMO, and I'd say that even TOTK, didn't pull this off as well. BOTW also found a great balance of difficulty IMO, where it kicked my ass with the first few enemy encounters, but the challange didn't feel insurmountable to me, and Lynel and early guardian encounters aside, I never felt like I was being brutaly punished by my lack of skill (the game generally gives you the tools and resources you need to compensate for a lack of skill, in other ways. You can also avoid or run away from most encounters, ther than Ganon and the Blights). I was super interested in Bloodborne, but having attempted to play it for a few hours, I can`t seem to get to grips with the combat mechanics, and I felt like I made basicly no progress, so it was a case of a difficulty that is too punishing for me to ever be able to ever make meaningful progress and enjoy the game, which is a shame because the world seems super intriguing, and I`d love to actually be able to explore it... Sekiro is another game I`d be super interested in playing, if it weren`t for the difficulty.

You know what I really miss when they used to make achievements pretty hard but you would get something really really cool and unlock-able and usable for multiplayer sometimes like if you saw somebody using a specific item it was like behind a difficult challenge you would know if they were bad ass, and I just feel like more games don’t do that often especially in multiplayer, and that includes carryover data like in gears of war. If you played the previous titles and you beat them on high difficulty you get exclusive skins for the next game.

I still have the Fallout 4 game guide in my closet. 2. Those nice booklets that come with the game. They always gave a description for each character and it had some funny lines in there. 3. More story for Halo infinite!! Please no more multiplayer stuff!! Give us more story!! Lol 😂

A few of these have been brought back much earlier by the wider Indie Scene and the Mid-Market, or just never left them. I can tell ya that for the first entry of demos it might have been inspired by the *HUGE* push of the wider Indie Scene and Mid-Market with every Steam Next Fest and the HauntedPS1 Demo Discs. Difficulty can be found *in spades* in Indie Titles... at least if you know where to look >.> One of my faves from this list is that the Indie Scene and Mid-Market have never given up the linear game. Ever. The one on this list I'm glad is coming back since it didn't seem to be there even outside the Triple-A is the horror games with *actual mechanics*.

Freeware was a massive marketing tool. DOOM was what it was because they released a big flashy demo and encouraged people to share it around. There were a lot of others but the idea of making something fun to play and giving people a taste for free lingered for a long time after budgets and staff sizes expanded massively. Also, it tends to weed out the 'after 50 hours it gets fun' BS.

I think the problem is it's not something that can be easily thrown into a game. Games have to be explicitly designed around it, which is difficult and could conflict with other design goals. For example if a game had destructible buildings, that means designers would always have to plan around that while creating the narrative and game progression. They have to think of all the ways it could break if the player destroys things, and how to stop them doing that. Games could have more limited environmental damage though. Like trees and lampposts you can known down, that sort of thing.

I'd like to see the return of Achievements with meaning or bonuses: Another comment here (from zombiepie) had mentioned achievements that that unlocked something in multiplayer so when you saw it, you knew the player had done something difficult in the game. In addition to that I'd love to see the return of achievements with actual gameplay bonuses. The best example that comes to mind is the original Mass Effect had almost all of its achievements tied to some kind of bonus for your current or next playthrough so for example if you killed (I believe) 150 enemies with the pistol you unlocked that weapon specialization for all future playthroughs when creating your character. I thought that was really cool and rewarding.

One thing I have been told is that cartridges for playing games might return due to the digital capabilities could store 250gb on them. It maybe because of the size of these games now that they would hold a lot more data so you don't have to download so much before you play. Do not know if it would happen because discs are so solidified but it would be interesting to see it developed.

Modern difficult games have a much better difficulty than old games; Old games were difficult for the wrong reasons. Time limts, continues and lives (often with a strict limit), unclear what you're suppsed to do, no guides or maybe there were bugs/glitches to mess things up. Nowadays, it's all about greating a challenge that's as fair as possible. And even if you have trouble, there is a wide community online, ready to give all kinds of tips & tricks.

The human eye cannot detect anything over 55 fps that is why they set the standard for televisions at 60fps games were originally designed for the television screens and this was the same for home consoles, PC's and arcade games. As the technology improved, the screens could handle higher frame rates and pixel counts. The technology has improved, but the human eye has stayed the same, so 60fps is still the minimum required for smooth footage regardless of the screen or graphics capabilities. If a game can not be played at 60fps, the developers and coders are basically incompetent and should find a different form of employment.

I agree. Devs and executives need to gtfo of development if they refuse to optimize games. It's gotten so bad all games should be legally required to hit 60FPS minimum on console and even PC. I can notice the huge difference between 55FPS and 60FPS. Too many games released in the past 2 years drop below 60FPS for graphics that aren't even that good. And that's with jacked up requirements ie Gotham Knights, Hogwarts Legacy that have bad graphics yet have RX 5700 XT recommended lmfao.
@itt2055
@itt2055 Год назад
@karlsilverone the human eye, optic nerve and brain can not detect anything over 55fps. It is just the way it is. Remember that at 2 meters, you can only see in focus 2 square centimetres. Both eyes also have a blind spot near the centre that your brain compensates for by filling in the black spots from memory. Your eyes never stop moving and are constantly shifting the focal point to create the image that you think you are seeing but because of the limitations of the human eye the human brain uses its memory to fill in and approximate what the eyes are looking at. You just think that you can tell the difference, but it is physically impossible for anyone to see more than 55fps.
@noobbotgaming2173
@noobbotgaming2173 Год назад
@@itt2055 Nope. A 2014 MIT study revealed people can recognize an image at 13 milliseconds. Which basically is 75 FPS. We can easily tell the difference between 55 and 60 FPS. I couldn't find any research to back up your claim of a specific number of 55 FPS. You don't know shit.

In terms of framerate, having experienced older pc games and earlier current gen games at 60 fps, it`s really hard to go back to 30 fps. If the newest games insist on being limited to 30 fps at 4k, than they should add a performance mode that brings the render resolution down to 1080p and the fps to 60, while maintaining all the other graphics settings the same where possible, and than either use FSR to bring the render resolution back to 4k, or just have the output resolution stay at 1080p. Alot of people still don`t have 4k displays anyway (such as myself), so not having the option to sacrifice some of that resolution I can`t take advantage of, in order to make the overall experience smoother, is kind of annoying, especially when the current gen consoles specificly promised 4k, and 60 fps. With that in mind, if we can't have both, we should atleast be allowed the choice between one and the other. In the case of starfield, I understand the choice to go for 4k 30fps, but I do hope we get the option for 1080p 60fps, atleast on series X (with the series S maybe getting a performance mode with a lower internal resolution, to try and reach that 60 fps target)
@cmdr.jabozerstorer3968
@cmdr.jabozerstorer3968 Год назад
I think Starfield is CPU-limited, so it's gong to struggle to be 60fps on Series X even at 1080p.
@andreanastacio9548
@andreanastacio9548 Год назад
@@cmdr.jabozerstorer3968 That`s a good point... And if that`s the case, than running the game at 1080p would potentially make an already CPU bound game rely even more on ghe CPU, making the game run worse... We`ll have to wait and see if that`s the case and Bethesda gets a pass, when people get their hands on the game and run benchmarks on different pc configs...

What do I want to see come back? --Single player games with love and art we saw in things like the first three Halo games. --RTS games that are simple and to the point. Not too complex to play. --For that matter, more games in general that are simple and not overloaded with "features" and "mechanics" that wind up leaving you needing a guide to understand how to play it. Games like that have their place, but so too do the ones that are just a fun place to escape to for a while. --Games like "Nexus, the Jupiter Incident". Now maybe I don't know of ones that are out there, but I want more games where you were in command of a ship, or several ships, and you are fighting battles or dealing with problems as a captain of that/those ships. Again, nothing overly complex, and something with a good SINGLE player story. --And of course, one we can all agree on; games I can play the single player mode of without it having to check for updates. Heck, at one point updates to C&C3 actually ruined the single player mode because it messed with all kinds of things. But even without that, once my copy of Starcraft 2 knows an update exists, I can't play it until I download it. Like dude, I just want the single player mode!
